Message from the President

Dear Friends,

This year’s President’s Report and Honor Roll of Donors is a tribute to the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet who moved mountains 90 years ago and continue to teach us to be unstoppable. The sisters’ charism is a call to each and every one of us to love, to lead and to serve in our own lives — and to make sure we are always responding to the needs of the times.

To honor the sisters’ legacy and to prepare fearless visionaries for a just future, we are establishing the CSJ Institute at Mount Saint Mary’s this year. The Institute will advance the CSJ commitment to serve all persons without distinction, keeping the sisters’ mission at the forefront of our work.

I am equally proud to announce an initiative that is one of my greatest priorities moving forward. Mount Saint Mary’s is launching a health and wellness movement that will transform our students’ lives, our campuses and the community. At the center of the initiative is the Wellness Pavilion — the first new construction on the Chalon Campus in 35 years. The pavilion will be the hub of student activity. It will also complement our commitment to students’ academic and spiritual development with the pursuit of life-long healthy habits. This is a big dream and a big investment. We can only do it with your help.

You will read more about the CSJ Institute and the Wellness Pavilion in the next few pages, as well as three other areas in which Mount Saint Mary’s continues to answer the call of the sisters to serve communities both local and global.

As we mark our 90th anniversary, we celebrate our successes and embrace the transformative opportunities that are now within our grasp.

90 Unstoppable Years: Responding to the Needs of the Times

A Wellness MovementMount Saint Mary’s graduates are a mighty force in the world. We want to make them even stronger with the Wellness Pavilion at Chalon.

The wellspring of this movement is the Wellness Pavilion, the University’s state-of-the-art hub for health, sports and

wellbeing — everything students need to master the art of living vigorously. The pavilion will mark the first construction

on the Chalon Campus in 35 years, and its glass exteriors will highlight the campus’ signature vistas and help put

wellness on display at the Mount.

If this sounds like a project that has Mount Saint Mary’s name written all over it, you’re right. Health and wellness roots run deep at the University.

Back in 1948, the Mount’s focus on healthy living led to the creation of the first nursing baccalaureate degree in California. One of our graduates, Sister Callista Roy, CSJ, ’63, developed the Roy Adaptation Model of Nursing that is still nationally recognized as a leading approach to holistic patient care. Now, to meet the evolving needs of these times, a new Wellness Pavilion will allow the University to tackle the major health issues of today.

“We have a healthcare crisis in our society,

and we in higher education have received a clarion call to help build a healthier nation,” says Mount Saint Mary’s President Ann McElaney-Johnson. “And it starts right here with our students. Healthcare isn’t only about healing the sick. It’s about creating healthy lifestyles at an early age. For our students to live lives of purpose, we must challenge their minds, develop their spirits — and build their strength.”

That strength will come through a next-generation Wellness Pavilion that will provide much-needed space on campus for health education and programming for health and counseling services; for our new basketball,

volleyball and soccer club teams; for a fitness center, pool, and studios for dance, yoga and cycling. The Pavilion will also house an advanced training lab and a comprehensive wellness hub where Athenians such as our doctoral students in physical therapy will work to keep our community healthy and strong — and teach others how to do the same.

Perhaps most importantly, a peer health advocacy program will empower students to work directly with each other to encourage a community-wide emphasis on creating lifelong habits for healthy, robust lives of purpose.

This is the next step in health and wellness at Mount Saint Mary’s. We invite you to join us.

Thomas and Dorothy Leavey FoundationAt Mount Saint Mary’s, we want to produce students who can

move mountains. Here’s your chance to help. The University is deeply appreciative that the Thomas and Dorothy Leavey Foundation is supporting the planned Wellness Pavilion — and challenging others to do the same through the Leavey Challenge.

The Leavey Challenge represents $5 million of a $10 million grant the Foundation has made toward the construction of the Mount’s Wellness Pavilion. Any new donors, or existing friends who stretch their gifts, will have their donations matched by the Foundation. Individual donors, corporations and foundations may all participate in the Leavey Challenge by making cash gifts and five-year pledges.

The project appealed to the Foundation on many levels, says Kathleen Duncan, a member of the Foundation’s board of directors. Her mother, Kathleen McCarthy Kostlan, who chairs the Foundation, has been active in sports most of her life and wanted Mount Saint Mary’s students to develop the same purpose and confidence she found by competing in athletics.

Duncan says the Foundation saw expansive fitness facilities, physical therapy labs and classroom space as a necessity to attract students and engage them. “We’re trying to keep the kids on campus and involved,” she says, “and if this space is something else that will help with that, then that’s another wonderful opportunity.”

Bill Hannon FoundationHealthy graduates can inspire change,

and the Bill Hannon Foundation is helping Mount Saint Mary’s realize this potential. The Foundation has pledged a leadership gift of $5 million for the Wellness Pavilion.

“For an institution where 60 percent of students pursue careers in healthcare fields, the Wellness Pavilion addresses a compelling need to provide for students’ physical and mental wellbeing,” says Sister Kathleen Kelly, CSJ, a Foundation board member.

“The health fields can be very stressful, and it’s a very good thing that graduates are going to be establishing healthier nutrition and exercise routines to carry over into their professional lives.”

Frank R. Seaver TrustFor the Frank R. Seaver Trust, Mount Saint

Mary’s 90-year history of educating future leaders for Los Angeles was a compelling reason why the Trust recently made a $2.2 million gift to support the Wellness Pavilion.

“This project helps the University fulfill its mission to educate the whole person,” says Victoria Seaver Dean, president of the Seaver Institute, which administers a trust of the Seaver estate.

“Frank believed that with an education, anyone could make a difference in their family’s life and the lives of others, so he supported educational institutions that were of a like mind. Mount Saint Mary’s is that kind of institution,” Dean says.

William H. Hannon FoundationThe William H. Hannon Foundation’s

$1 million contribution to the Wellness Pavilion will help promote the wellbeing of students while strengthening the community.

“The Mount has done such a wonderful job with its nursing and healthcare programs that we thought this project would serve the students very well,” says Kathleen Aikenhead, president of the William H. Hannon Foundation. “This broadens the experience for Mount Saint Mary’s students not only in terms of their learning, but in their own nutrition and health. With this new facility, the University will be giving students even more of the skills they need to go out into the world and help others.”

Mounting a Global ChargeAt Mount Saint Mary’s University, our vision is to graduate globally engaged,

culturally fluent leaders who will change the world. And when we say “world,”

we mean it. Just look at our history.

In the wake of World War II, Mount Saint Mary’s welcomed students from war-torn countries such as China and the Philippines. In the 1960s and 1970s, the Mount created a Cuban Teacher Training Institute, preparing Cuban refugees to lead in the classroom. And at the dawn of the 21st century, Mount Saint Mary’s established the Bridging Cultures: U.S./China Program with Nanjing University, opening relationships among professors and students from both institutions.

Now, the Mount has a bold, new goal: By 2025, at least 50 percent of University undergraduate students will graduate with significant, life-changing, global experiences.

At the heart of this goal is the University’s new Center for Global Initiatives, led by Eric Apfelstadt, PhD. The Center will bring the world to Mount students — through international research, a diverse visiting scholar program and international

student recruitment. The Center will also send Mount students out into the world — through international internships, service learning and study away opportunities.

Due to the generosity of donors such as business executive and trustee Stephen Page, the Center will have the resources it needs to transform Mount Saint Mary’s students into global agents of change.

In memory of his wife, Judy Kelly ’62, Page has set up a fund toward the development of the Center — and he is hoping others will follow suit. Page has issued a matching challenge: For all donors who give to the project, he will contribute a matching amount. To Page, international experience is a crucial career-boosting edge: “It changes the way an employer looks at an applicant.”

And it changes the way a student looks at the world.

Advancing WomenWhen women advance, the entire community advances with them. Our graduates

are evidence that women are strong leaders who lift up their families and their

communities.

It all started in 1975 when then-President Sister Cecilia Louise Moore, CSJ, ’53 created the first Women’s Leadership Program in the western United States. Yes, Mount Saint Mary’s was among the first to recognize the importance of empowering women to become strong and effective leaders.

As we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Women’s Leadership Program at the Mount, we plan to build on our strengths, expand our reach and empower not only our students, but also women in the broader community. Research indicates that when women advance, men and children get ahead too.

Currently the Mount hosts an annual Women’s Leadership Conference and we are the exclusive Southern California partner of Ready to Run™. This nationally recognized nonpartisan training program brings together hundreds of women each year who are seeking elected office or planning to engage in the political process. Our very own alumna Karina Macias ’10 participated in Ready to Run™ and was elected to the City Council in Huntington Park, Calif., in 2012.

We would like to see more women like Macias in elected office and more women in leadership roles across all sectors. That is why a team of Mount Saint Mary’s faculty has researched and produced the annual Report on the Status of Women and Girls in California™ for the past four years. The Report led to a partnership with Mayor Eric Garcetti and the Los Angeles City Commission on the Status of Women to create the first-ever gender analysis of the City of Los Angeles. We have also provided research for the cities of Pasadena and Glendale and for foundations, such as the Kern Community Foundation, that use our data to advocate for improving the lives of women and girls in their communities.

Our goal is to produce a new generation of leaders and increase gender equity in California and beyond. Generous support from alumna Dolores Schiffert ’60 is propelling us closer to our goal. This year, the Mount will launch the Center for the Advancement of Women, which will be the University’s hub for education, research and action on issues that affect women and girls.

Making Unstoppable PossibleMount Saint Mary’s students are bright, confident and determined. However, like

many students across the nation these days, they often lack the funds necessary

to afford a college education.

Even though the Mount is one of the least expensive private universities in California, our students still struggle financially.

Scholarship support has been a part of the Mount culture since the 1930s when the Alumnae Association Scholarship Fund was created so alumnae could help current students graduate. This tradition has grown over the years as the demand for support has increased. Today, 98 percent of Mount students receive some form of financial aid through government grants, loans and scholarships. Mount scholarships often fill the gaps that loans and grants do not cover.

They also allow our students to fulfill their dreams, and enable our supporters to make a direct and lasting impact on students’ lives. Blanca Duenas ’16 is the first in her family to attend college. Four years ago, determined to attend the Mount, she walked nearly three miles from the nearest bus stop to Chalon — in order to submit her signed financial letter in time. Buoyed by her parents’ unflinching support and her own indomitable spirit, Duenas

went on to earn the University’s first Unstoppable Scholarship. Today, she is the president of Chalon’s Student Government Association. One day, she says, maybe she will be the nation’s Secretary of Health and Human Services.

“I feel unstoppable,” Duenas says. “I’m not afraid to fail, to take a risk, to believe in myself, and to question what hasn’t been questioned.”

This past year, 1,271 alums and donors helped change students’ lives through scholarship support, including longtime funders at the Ann Peppers Foundation. When the Foundation offered to match individual scholarship contributions dollar for dollar up to $250,000, Mount Saint Mary’s supporters stepped up and fulfilled the challenge in just six months. Partners like the Ann Peppers Foundation allow the University to help more students realize their educational goals.

Over the next five years, Mount Saint Mary’s is committed to doubling our scholarship support for deserving students so we continue to graduate the next generation of unstoppable leaders.

Honoring our Founders’ SpiritNobody thought a college could be built on a desolate mountaintop, except the

Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet (CSJs). Fortunately, they had the vision and faith

to build Mount Saint Mary’s in 1925 to provide an excellent education for women

and allow them to reach their full potential.

“We must carry on the work of the sisters. If we don’t, a valuable asset will be lost. They have influenced many lives, many women, and impacted more than just Los Angeles. They have impacted the world. We can continue their work as a community.”

Ninety years later, the Mount still graduates leaders whose lives are filled with purpose, and the sisters continue to set the standard for empowering women and serving the community.

This year, Mount Saint Mary’s is establishing the CSJ Institute to honor the sisters’ legacy and advance their mission in the broader community. The Institute will educate and inspire a new generation of social justice leaders who will carry on the sisters’ important work in underserved communities around the world. The Institute will also conduct research and connect individuals to the sisters’ work through programs, trainings and pilgrimages.

Dedicated Mount supporters are making this Institute possible. Trustee Thomas J. Blumenthal,

Don and Mary Caratan Sloper ’62 and the CSJs themselves have made gifts to launch the Institute and begin the search for a director.

Already, a team of CSJs, alumnae, faculty and staff has come together to craft the Institute’s mission statement:

Rooted in the rich history and charism of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, the Institute provides the forward momentum to advance the CSJ commitment to serve all persons without distinction, to respond to the needs of the times, and to prepare fearless visionaries for a just future.

As we celebrate our 90th anniversary, we are thankful that the sisters’ work continues to drive the University forward — and will help ignite our vision for the next 90 years and beyond.
