The Bargara Men’sShed, welcomed AndreéRoberts, the Event Co-ordinator and Fundraiser forthe Marcus Mission Charity,Bundaberg, Queensland asour recent guest speaker.

Andreé introduced theShed to the Marcus MissionQueensland, which is a freemonthly program designedto reduce the risk of suicidefor men.

Andreé tells her story:“Commencing in 2018,

    Marcus Mission has de-

livered over 100 Resilience-building workshops to menin Queensland and ismaking a difference.

“It takes a village” to sup-port men through toughtimes and you can helpeach other too. MarcusMission is a free communityservice created and fundedby my family after losing our23 year-old son Marcus tosuicide.

“He was Bundaberg bornand raised and found itdifficult to talk about his

    depression, especially topsychologists, counsellorsand psychiatrists.

“He said he needed amentor, someone outsidethe family that he could trustand talk with in a regu-lar weekly and informalway, to help him open upand sift through his painfulbattles with his thoughts.

“You may all know some-one you can encourage toattend the monthly Re-silience Building Work-shops and mentor pro-grams.

“Please pass on thismessage to our communityto help men who are strug-gling. We warmly invitewomen, sisters and wiveswho can play a vital role inpromoting support to ourmuch-loved fathers, sons, husbands, brothers, uncles, grandfathers, and friendsthat can make a big differ-ence to relationships athome, in their workplace, and in the wider community.

“Marcus Mission takeson a non-judgmental peer-based approach to engagewith men in the communitythrough real mateship andconnection.

“Unfortunately, 13 men aweek in Queensland are lostto suicide and our regionhas the highest suiciderate in the state, but thisprogram is making a big dif-ference in our communities.

“It is tailored to buildresilience in men to em-

power and equip them withconfidence and skills tobetter manage personalissues and challenges intheir life and with the on-going social support of amentor that they can relateto.

“Beyond gaining re-silience, men have also con-tinued to develop theseskills further within ourMentoring Program in train-ing and coaching for reach-ing out to and giving back toother men in the community,or informally within their ownlives.

“Delivered by men formen, the free programworks effectively through anactivity based unique socialsetting and starts with a freebreakfast and finishes with afree lunch.

“We reach out with com-passion in raising awarenessspecifically around reducingthe risk of suicide in men 18years and over, and strivetowards working with thecommunity through effectivemonthly timeliness of theMarcus Mission initiative.

“It is with pleasure we areable to provide you withmore information about theprogram and warmly wel-come you, your familyand friends in ‘WorkingTogether’ in a commitmentto male suicide prevention.

“Come along on the lastMonday of the month to Bun-daberg’s NeighbourhoodCentre, 111 Targo Street.’’

    LADDER SAFETY WARNINGS

Study reveals devastating impacts of ladder falls

The potential dangerwith using a ladder forbasic household choreshas been revealed byQueensland researchers.

A study conducted byQueensland Health,University of Queens-land and QueenslandUniversity of Tech-nology looked at thelong-term impacts ofladder falls on 134 ofthe 255 people whopresented to emer-gency departmentsfor ladder-relatedinjuries at PrincessAlexandra (PAH)and Nambourhospitals over a12-month period.

The 134 admittedpatients spent anaverage of five daysin hospital with themost commoninjuries includingspinal, rib, leg, wrist and pelvicfractures, andlung damage.

UQ Faculty ofMedicine’s Dr. RobEley, who is alsoResearch Manager atthe PAH’s emergencydepartment, said the studyconfirmed the importanceof being more safety-conscious when usingladders.

“We just wanted to raisethis as an issue becausealthough ladder falls are

often portrayed as similarto slipping on a bananapeel or something thatis quite funny, the con-sequences can beabsolutely catastrophic,’’Dr. Eley said.

    “ W ehave had

    people whohave not

    made it to thee m e r g e n c ydepartmentbecause they

    have died onscene but also

    people who havedied in hospital

    and people whohave suffered ter-

    rible injuries be-cause of falls.’’

    The research alsorevealed those who

needed hospital treat-ment after a fall experi-

enced ongoing physicaland mental impacts afterthe initial incident.

“Ladder falls go farbeyond that of the physicalinjury; they significantlyimpact a person’s mentalhealth and the wholefamily,’’ Dr. Eley said.

    Dr. Eley said men aged

over 55 were particularly atrisk when using laddersand made up more thanhalf of reported fall cases.

Balance is an issueas you get older

“As you get a little olderyour balance is not asgood . . . and our view is‘no one is going to tell me Ican’t go up a ladder any-more. I’m just as spritelyas I was 30 years ago’,which is absolute rubbish,of course,’’ he said.

Dr. Eley 70, said any-one using a ladder shouldlook at buying safetyattachments whichincrease stability.

“I would like to seeshops actually sayingduring the purchase, ‘Haveyou considered buyingstabilising accessorieswith this?’’ he said.

Dr. Eley said thebiggest cause of injurieswas people over-reaching,causing the ladder toswivel and slide.

He said anyone using aladder should also makesure the surrounding areawas clear of items whichcould cause more severeinjuries on impact.

“Fractures from a fallare normally not the mostserious of injuries but ifyou get a fence postthrough you or you land ona pile of bricks, that willcause very serious long-term consequences,’’ hesaid.

“Don’t stop going upladders if you are com-pelled to do it but takethe time to think aboutpotential risks and howyou can mitigate those.

“The community can domore to educate peoplethat it’s OK to request helpor employ home servicecontractors to completetasks that require a ladder.

    AN ‘OAR-SOME’ JOB

These oars were sanded, imperfections filled andrepainted by BMS Member Jack Moore for Jacki Starkwho was over the moon with the finished assignment.Jacki remarked: “Thanks to the Bargara Men’s Shedfor fixing my oars. I love how you restored them. Youall did a fantastic job, especially as it has remindedme of my grandfather, who was a champion rower inhis day at the Bundaberg Rowing Club’’.

Utilitas Group was formed10 years ago with the missionto converting waste fromforestry, agriculture, fruit, veg-etables, cane sugar and gen-eral waste into energy andvalue added products. bio-gas, hydrogen gas and fertil-izers are just some of thepotential product that can beproduced from waste materi-als.

The challenging goal ofthe Utilitas Group is to estab-lish 100 bioHubs across Aus-tralia and South East Asia.

Our Men’s Shed wasapproached by Utilitas’s gen-eral manager Mr. MarkO’Shannessy and asked if wecould create a souvenir tohelp celebrate the opening ofthe Bundaberg bioHub and

the 10th birthday of UtilitasGroup. A valve handle froman old WWTP valve wastaken, refurbished andmounted on a silky oaktimber stand and base.

All work on this projectwas done by BMS President,Peter Ryan (pictured above).

The souvenir was present-ed to Utilitas CEO andFounder Fionia Waterhouseat a special dinner in Bargaraon October 1, 2020.

The inscription on thesouvenir read “Celebration 10Years of Utilitas – BundabergbioHub 2020” “UTG 1 of100”. The UTG 1 of 100 signi-fies “Utilitas Group 1st of 100bioHubs” that Utilitus plan toestablish.

Fionia Waterhouse wasoverjoyed with the souvenirsaying it was the most beauti-ful thing and that it would takepride of place in BrisbaneOffice.
