PATCH NEWS

Lakeshore Gourders (Alice Pawlowski)

Summer passed quickly and our patch kept busy with projects, shows and more. Many from our patch helped man

booths at the county fairs, Lake Co. fair was the first week in Aug. where Kathy Voyles worked most of the week pro-

moting our fall show. Hope you all enjoyed the last edition of the AGS magazine, between our state show and Sherry

Benedict being the Featured Artist the IGS really had a nice spread to be proud of. Patch activities in July was a lumi-

nary light and in August was drums. The patch displayed their gourd art for the month at the Heartland Artist Gallery

located in Plymouth. In September we learned a new technique using fresh foliage and spray paint. We welcome anyone

in our area to join us, we meet the 2nd Sunday of the month during the fall/winter season. The patch was busy preparing

for the IGS Fall Show at the Lake Co. fairgrounds in Crown Point. We had our traditional “Lakeshore Gourders Bake

Sale” to help all with their sweet tooth that day.

Sugar Creek Gourd Patch & Thorn Tree Gourd Patch (Karen Niemeyer)

Both the Sugar Creek and Thorn Tree gourd patches meet at the Thorntown Public Library in Boone County. The first

to form was the Sugar Creek Gourd Patch, so named for the creek that passes through the town. The Thorn Tree patch

takes its name from the huge thorns of the honeylocust (yes, all one word) trees that blanket the area and possess 3”

thorns. The Eel River tribe of the Miami originally named the town Kawiakiungi, which means “place of thorns”. Al-

though the Native American used gourds as dippers, containers, and as martin houses to attract birds to control mosqui-

toes, today’s gourds are usually crafted by both patches for decorative purposes. Visitors are invited to any of the meet-

ings: 6-8:00 p.m. first and third Wednesdays, and 2-4:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays. Currently the

members are working on individual projects, as well as preparing shards and small gourds for use in Indiana Gourd Soci-

ety Kids’ Patch projects. On October 1 Karen Niemeyer was the featured speaker at a Boone County Senior Services

luncheon that usually hosts 30 diners. Because of the topic of gourds, more than 55 attended and enthusiastically learned

about Karen’s three-table display of gourds. The seniors decided the scarecrow that was created for the IGS Fall Festival

October 25 competition should be named “Gourdy.” Both patches helped create “Gourdy” and look forward to future

projects. Visitors are welcome to both the library and to the patch meetings, and questions may be directed to Karen at

765-436-7348.

Linda’s Gourd Patch (Jim Ballard)

The 1st “Linda’s Gourd Patch” gathering was held on September 13, 2014 from 2-5 pm. Fourteen people at-

tended. The gathering was held at Keith Harlow’s house, the husband of Linda, in the country in Hancock

County, Indiana. It was a cool windy day. A large campfire was burning which felt good. Linda’s gourds

were on display. Her touch on the gourds was great. She did beautiful work. I gave a talk on hand-training

gourds. Joye Orr did a green cleaning demo on one of my green apple gourds. We roasted hot dogs on the

fire. The Patch had a great time. We decided we would get together every two months. The next gathering

will be on November 15, 2014. I would like to thank Keith Harlow for hosting our gathering at his beautiful

place. Also, thank you Phyllis Kengen, Keith’s mother-in-law, a great IGS member, Joye Orr for her demo,

and Last but not least, all those who attended. I’m looking forward to the future gatherings of “Linda’s Gourd

Patch” and for the sharing of friends and fellowship. I feel it may become like a new family.

Thank you for the Gourd Time. Hope more of you will join us. Contact Jim at 317-468-5717

A Message from Glenn Burkhalter, Chairman of the AGS Jim Story Award

Hello to All, Several state gourd festivals were held earlier in the year and now the fall festivals are fast approaching. Since the summer of 2013, your Jim Story Award committee has been hard at work and have: 1. Revised our Award policy to provide a cash incentive to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners beginning with the 2014 competition. 2. Revised our policy so as to select Award winners in time to publish them annually in the spring edition of The Gourd Magazine. To enable us to do this, November 30 was designated as the cutoff date for submitting applications by the state winners. 3. Revised and further clarified the Jim Story Award application, rules and questionnaire. 4. Produced and presented Jim Story Award certificates to previous Award participants. 5. Produced and published a set of Manipulated Gourd Judging Guidelines whereby a point system will be used by experienced National judges to select future Award winners. These guidelines are suitable for use in the state shows and may be adopted by any state chapter. 6. Working with The Gourd Magazine editorial staff, we have encouraged publication of the "I Remember Jim story" type articles to help educate the general AGS membership as to a few of the MAJOR contributions Jim made to the development of the AGS. Members of the committee wrote a couple of the articles. There is still much work to be done and we need your help with: 1. Encouraging your members to consider planting a backyard gourd garden and trying their hand at gourd manipulation (several "how to" articles on this subject have been published in The Gourd Magazine to teach various ways of doing this). 2. We cannot depend on the large gourd growers to sustain this award. We need your encouragement to your members through your newsletters, word of mouth and example. 3. If you do not already have one, we need you to include a Jim Story Award category in your state gourd shows. That alone will encourage some of your members to try their hand at gourd manipulation. Please don't say; "But we don't grow gourds in our state"! Instead, why not encourage your members to try? We might all be surprised! 4. If you already have a Jim Story Award category, you need you to make sure that your Jim Story Award winner submits his/her application and all required information to the address shown at the bottom of the application prior to the cutoff date. Soon after your show is completed would be the ideal time to get it done while all the excitement and adrenaline is flowing. Entry forms and details are on the AGS website. 5. We are trying to develop a pool of candidates who will serve as National judges for the Award entries. Experience in growing and manipulating gourds

would be a plus but we are not ruling anyone out at this point. We need you to submit

the names of your members who might be willing to serve on that committee. Previous

requests through The Gourd Magazine and Big Tent have been unsuccessful.

6. We need you to PROMOTE, PROMOTE, PROMOTE the Jim Story Award and a

good start would be to get this e-mail in the hands of your members ASAP.

Thank you,

Glenn Burkhalter, Chairman of the Jim Story Award

Message from the 2015 Show Chair Hello to All,

The IGS 2015 State Gourd Show will be held the first weekend in May. This will be our third year at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds in Lebanon, Indiana. We are looking forward to the adventure, changes and improvements that were made over last year’s show. I am going to highlight some of the changes that have been made for 2015. The showbook will be in the mail and online in late November. Please see it for more detailed information.

This year will be the 3rd annual vendor’s competition for the Joyce Dankowski Memorial Award “Best Vendor Dis-play”. IGS would like to congratulate the 2014 winner Delaina DeHaven of “Gourd Haven” for her lovely display last year.

Listed below are some of the new things IGS has added for 2015: Division 1 -- “Memorial Division”, is new in the adult competition categories. It stands as a memorial to those members who have helped the society in educating the public with their unique talents, designs, manipulations, crafting and art work on their gourds. In Division 1, you may enter only one (1) entry per person per class. (In all other divisions two (2) entries are permitted.) In Division 1, ALL exhibiters compete on an equal basis. The Jim Story Manipulated Gourd & Floral Design Memorial, Classes MD-A, -B, -C, are for manipulated dry gourds:

corkscrew, knotted, and grown in a mold. Some of the requirements for these classes are that all gourds must have been grown by the exhibitor in the prior year, 2014. They must be green cleaned with cleaned stem attached. After IGS judging of these three (3) classes, all of the entries will be judged together for competition at AGS level. The winning exhibitor is responsible for all of the AGS documentation. In the Floral Design Class MD-D, gourds used may be purchased by the exhibitor. This class must be preregistered. Awards of $25- $15- $5- will be given to 1st- 2nd- 3rd place winners of the AGS Jim Story Competition and Class MD-D. Awards provided by Jane Story.

The Joe Lee Memorial, Class MD-E is for wood burning on a gourd in the Joe Lee style. He did wood burning on small jewelry gourds and Hawaiian quilt patterns on cannon ball gourds.

The Debby Grunden Memorial, Class MD-F is for a gourd purse in the Debby Grunden style. She made gourd purses in whimsical styles and also used a silk dye technique.

The Joyce Dankowski-- Best Visual Display Award, Class MD-G is open to vendors only. This award will be given to the vendor with the best visual display or booth.

Another Memorial Award given, but not in Division 1, is The Honey Bear and Mary Miller Memorial Award for Most Competition Entries. This award is given to the exhibitor with the most actual competition entries.

Also this year, three (3) new classes have been added in the adult competition and one (1) in the children’s: Class 22 - “My Way” - any botanical design not already listed in the botanical division. Class 43 - Inlay/Mosque on a gourd. This is for all of you inlay and egg shell artists. Class 59 - Gourd Pull - a gourd attached to a pull for a light/fan/etc. Class 85 - Any Holiday Item. This is for the children’s competition.

I want to emphasize that in the 2015 competition divisions IGS has issued a Warning to all competitors. Please pay close attention to the competition classes that state: Required: a 3”X5” card with…… this card is required in all of Division 2, and some in Divisions 6, 7, 8 and 10. This year your entry could be marked down by the judges, if the re-quired card is not with your entry. Part of the IGS Mission Statement is: To promote educational efforts which advance an appreciation for the gourd’s role and significance in past and present cultures and for gourd cultivation, crafting and artistry. We feel that this card, with the required information on it, is very educational to the public and the judges and helps fulfill the IGS’s mission.

In 2015 we will again have an IGS Members Sales Booth. In general, ANY ACTIVE member may display/sell up to ten (10) gourd items in the booth. Your FEE to display/sell in this booth is to work 4 hours, in the booth or where IGS needs you. You must be pre-registered by April 25, 2015 to participate in this booth. Please see the show book for more com-plete information and a registration form.

If you have any question or comments, please let me know. Come to the 2015 IGS State Show and see lots of……..

Gourds, The Universal Canvas!

I hope to see you there! Pat Moore, 2015 Show Chair

President’s Message Continued

Continued from p. 1

Pat has also entered competition at several other state shows and has done very well at all of them. Diane Werblo won

Best of Show at the Indiana State Fair this year and Mac McCrary won some 1st place ribbons. Bill Freihofer, our 1st

Vice President, won the Jim story Award at our IGS State Show. Frances Bascom, 2nd Vice President, and Jim Ballard

won awards for their manipulated gourds at our IGS State Show and Frances also won Best of Show in dried gourds.

Bobbie Lee won Best of Show in Novice. Delaina DeHaven won the Best Booth Award this year. There are many oth-

ers that deserve a “well done” for their creativity and handiwork also. If you are an IGS member who won a special

award and I left you out, I apologize. Please let me know so you will get recognition for it. Looking forward to seeing all

your art competition pieces next year.

SPECIAL NOTE TO MEMBERS

I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your past participation in helping our Society work. We appreciate

and need all of you. We are asking you again to step forward and volunteer to share the responsibilities of running the

Society. We currently need members to volunteer for Board positions. At this time, we are especially in need of a Sec-

retary. Karen Niemeyer has once again volunteered to stand in until we can find someone. We have almost 300 mem-

bers and hope that some of you will get more involved with the Society and help share the load again. Board positions

are supposed to have term limits, 2 years with a limit of 2 terms. We have not been able to stick with this process due to

lack of anyone wanting to step forward and take a position. When this happens it is an undue burden on a few people

and it can also lead to other problems. This is also a good way to help make changes if you are not happy with the way

the Society is going. We need people who will step up and take a position for a set number of years and bring their ex-

pertise into the society. Think about being the next President, Vice President, Show Chair, or Director, etc. We are

open to any suggestions for improvement. You are always welcome to send me a note, or call me and let me know if

you have an issue with any of our policies. I will be glad to take it to the Board for discussion. I want all members of

our Society to be more involved in decision making.

Thank you for your consideration Ida Kennedy, President Indiana Gourd Society

The current board of directors is presenting new By-Laws to the membership

A special membership meeting will be called to discuss these in detail.

Review of Indiana Proposed Gourd Society By-Laws

Phil Moorhead 1. The name of the organization shall be "Indiana Gourd Society, Inc." The organization will be referred to as IGS throughout the

bylaws. Discussion: This comes directly from article I of constitution. The reference to ETA chapter comes here in By-law 3.

2. The legal address will be the address of the treasurer.

Discussion: This brings us in compliance with the state non-profit corporation law

3. The purpose of the organization shall be:

a) Presentation of an annual gourd show in Indiana by members of the society where teaching classes, demonstrations, and lectures are given on gourd horticulture and craft/artwork. Gourds and gourd art are exhibited. All aspects of the show are performed by members. Proceeds from this show represent approximately 80% of the income of the corporation and the preparations for the show, which goes on all year, represents 50% of our time. The show is in progress over an extended weekend and is open to the public;

b) Seed saving and/or exchange, especially old varieties, which are in danger of disappearing, and newly developed varieties. These are available to members throughout the year. Seed sales represent approximately 10% of our income;

c) Exhibition of fresh, preserved, and crafted gourds in county/state fair horticulture exhibits. Exhibition at the Indiana State Fair, annually for the entire run of the fair. This is one of the main avenues of presenting gourd knowledge, horticulture and art to the public;

d) Educational programs for members. Subjects discussed are better gourd production techniques, disease and insect control methods, preservation techniques, and crafting/artwork on gourds. These are presented to members by means of several newsletters annually, educational pamphlets, brochures, lectures, and demonstrations at several gourd meetings throughout the year. Dues from memberships represent approximately 10% of income for the corporation;

e) Continue to function as the ETA Chapter of American Gourd Society,Inc. f) Development of true-to-type seeds via growth of varieties in isolation; g) Presentation of demonstrations to garden clubs and master gardener groups; h) Other charitable and exempt purposes under Section 501(c)(5) of Internal Revenue Code, as amended; i) To cooperate with other gourd societies in advancing our purposes and enhancing the dissemination of information relative

to gourd culture, history, development, pure seeds, nourishment, growth, crafting, and usages of gourds generally. Discussion: This entire section comes directly from the Articles of Amendment to the Articles of Incorporation.

4. The mission statement of the organization shall be "(1) to promote educational efforts which advance an appreciation for the

gourd's role and significance in past and present cultures, (2) to promote gourd cultivation, (3) to promote gourd crafting and artistry.

Discussion: This comes directly from article III of the constitution

5. Membership in IGS shall be open to everyone willing to support the activities of the society and upon payment of the member-

ship dues fee. There are no initiation fees. Each adult in good standing shall have the privilege of full membership. A family membership includes all related members of a family living at one dwelling.

Discussion: This comes directly from article IV of the constitution and incorporates chapter 7 of state non-profit corpora-

tion law

6. The IGS board of directors shall be elected by the membership present at the fall membership meeting. The date and location

of this meeting will be determined by the board of directors. The president will cause the publication of this meeting in the IGS newsletter and website at least thirty (30) days prior to the meeting. The membership shall elect FIVE board of directors in odd-numbered years and SIX board of directors in even-numbered years. If there are not sufficient members willing to serve on the board to cause a vote to fill the vacancies, the president will declare the proposed slate as elected. If there are not sufficient members willing to fill all vacancies the president will declare those positions vacant until the following year. Board members and officers must be members of the society. No member of the board of directors will be paid, except documented expenses in support of the society.

Discussion: This comes from article V of the constitution and from chapter 6 of the state non-profit corporation law. (Continued on page 9)

Jim Story Design General Rules—IGS Show Competition 2015

For Memorial Division Class MD-D ONLY

Ruth Moorhead

A) The most important concept: THE GOURD/CONTAINER MUST DOMINATE to win for IGS competi-

tions. Note: In normal flower arranging the container never dominates, the plant material (flowers and foliage does). So to win in IGS competition, the gourd must dominate by its color, size, or texture.

B) Judging tip: When you stand in front of the design close your eyes, open them - what is the first thing you

see - that is the dominant item. It should be the gourd. If it is not, then change the floral contents. C) If your flowers are brightly colored or large the gourd will not dominate. D) If you can add contrived flowers made of gourd or small dried gourds on sticks then the gourd material of

the finished design will have a better chance of dominating. E) Neatness counts! All other flower arranging "rules" should still be followed (balance/rhythm, proportion/

scale, and dominance/contrast)

2015 Roll of Honor Nominations—Due Feb 1, 2015

The charter members who founded the Indiana Gourd Society decided to show their appreciation to those in-

dividuals who went above and beyond their volunteer efforts for the society. This passion for the growing,

crafting and promotion of gourds is shown in their efforts. Individuals who have clearly demonstrated this

work in any area of the gourd society may be nominated for the Roll of Honor. All nominees must be current

or past members of the society. Any current IGS member may make a nomination. Nominations for the Roll

of Honor are to be sent to the secretary of IGS on an 8 ½ X 11” sheet of paper. The Executive Board will re-

view the nominations. If necessary, the Executive Board will appoint a committee to narrow the number of

nominees. If a committee is needed to reduce the number of nominations, they will return to the Executive

Board a smaller list of nominees. The executive board will then select the honorees from the smaller list. The

Executive Board will have the final decision regarding how many individuals there will be. Nominating in-

structions will appear in the Tendril and on the IGS website.

Those found worthy by the Executive Board will then have their names engraved on the Roll of Honor plaque

and will be introduced at the dinner of the annual Indiana Gourd Show.

Possible Nomination Instructions:

On a piece of 8 ½ sheet of paper write or type why you believe your nominee should be added to the Roll of

Honor. Please site specific activities this individual was involved with.

Send your nomination to the Secretary of I.G.S. by February 1.

Review of Indiana Proposed Gourd Society By-Laws

(Continued from page 7)

7. New board of directors elected at the fall meeting will be installed on January 1 of the following year. A

membership quorum shall consist of the members present at the meeting. The board of directors will elect a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and membership secretary. The president and treas-urer are the only officers who may bind the IGS to a contract.

Discussion: This changes the election date. It identifies a quorum as required by chapter 11 of the

state non-profit corporate law. It specifies that the membership votes on a board of directors who

then vote on officers (to bring this section into compliance with state non-profit corporation law.

8. The president may appoint committees, with approval of the board of directors, charged with specific

tasks. Discussion: It is not necessary to identify each of the committees.

9. The president, with the assistance of the treasurer, will present a proposed budget to the board of direc-

tors. The fiscal year of the IGS will be July1 to June 30. Discussion: This timing is necessary to keep state show funds in the same year of the show. If the

FYE is changed, some income and expenses for the show will occur in the wrong year.

10. These by-laws cancel and revoke the present constitution and standing rules. These by-laws may be

amended by a simple majority vote of either the membership or the board of directors. Discussion: This brings us into compliance with state non-profit corporation law.

11. In the event of dissolution of the Indiana Gourd Society, Inc., all debts shall be paid then any remaining

assets will be forwarded to the American Gourd Society. No refunds or monies will be returned to IGS members.

Discussion: This comes from the current constitution.

12. Any item not covered in these by-laws will be governed by current state non-profit corporation law.

Discussion: Brings us in compliance with state law.

PATCH NEWS (Continued from page 2)

Central Indiana Patch (Diane Werblo & Mac McCrary)

The Central Indiana Patch (CIP) of IGS met Thurs., Nov. 6, at GPAC from 6-8 pm. Ann

Stankiewicz did a class on Zentangle for us. We practiced on cards before we tangled with the

gourds!

The patch has been designing our space on the traveling state gourd. Currently the background is the

City of Indianapolis flag. In its quadrants are symbols of important things in our area: The Indy

Errata Sept/Oct Issue

We missed putting the patch news from Lakeshore Gour-

ders in the last issue because of an e-mail problem.

We misspelled Mac McCrary’s name in the State Fair

volunteer list, and also left out a major volunteer, Diane

Werblo.

Our apologies to all.

Member Passing

Merle and Liz Teel have been active members of the Indiana Gourd Society for many years. They were active

gourd growers and crafters during the years that they were members of IGS. Merle and Liz worked with

George and Alice Koehler in Ways and Means in the Indiana Gourd Society for years. The four of them

maintained the inventory and staffed the booth at many activities. Merle grew gourds and made gourd musi-

cal instruments which he used to entertain many people at events around the state of Indiana. He enjoyed

showing children how to play the various instruments on display. Merle shared his talents at Purdue Spring-

fest, the Tippecanoe County Master Gardener Spring Plant Sale, The Indiana State Fair, in local classrooms,

church events and other volunteer activities .Merle taught agronomy at Purdue and he was always eager to

share helpful information about growing healthy gourds. He presented many programs to IGS about soil

types needed to grow gourds and suggested fertilizer that would be best for growing quality gourds and he

was available to answer phone calls or messages about growing issues for other gourd growers in the area.

We greatly appreciate all of the years of service that Merle and Liz gave to IGS. Merle died May 6, 2014.

His wife Liz, lives at Heritage Healthcare, 3401 Soldiers Home Rd., West Lafayette, IN 47906.
