Clark County Quilters Newsletter Volume 68 Issue 8 April 2015 President’s Corner Sandie Hollister (360) 576-7709 or [email protected] Dear Guild members, It was fun to sit back and take a tour of Japan with our excellent guide, Patricia Belyea at the March guild meeting and learn about the textile trade and yukata cottons. I learned some interesting things about fabric and quilters in Japan. It was most surprising to hear that a person wanting to learn about quilting will stay with their “master teacher” to learn everything about this skill. Am glad we do things differently in our country by taking classes, listening to a variety of speakers, and learning from each other at retreats etc. Countdown to our annual quilt show is almost complete. The various quilt show committees have worked hard to make our 40 th anniversary quilt show very special this year. Besides seeing the quilts, volunteering in some way for the show, I hope you get an opportunity to take a class or hear a lecture or demonstration from the variety of presenters that will be teaching over the three days. Plus, I understand that Lynn and Judith have a real treat awaiting us at the April guild meeting as we see the winning quilts one last time. Hope you don’t miss that meeting. We will also be voting at the April guild meeting for the non -profit group that will receive funds from the Opportunity Quilt ticket sales for next year. See you at the quilt show, Sandie Sunshine and Shadows Rosemary Griggs (360) 891-7029 or [email protected] Roberta Peterson’s was the featured artist at the 10 th annual Quilt Show in Amboy on March 28 th and 29 th . Lynn Czaban and Bonnie Keller will have their quilt, “Ms. McDonald and the Old Goat”, displayed for 6 months in the

website. We have so many great quilters in our guild! Carol Koch recently lost her husband, Marty, in a truck accident. Cheryl Spalding’s father passed in January. Pat Stephen’s mother, Ruth, passed away in March. She was a long-time quilter.

We offer our condolences and prayers to our members who have lost their loved ones.

Cat print fabrics are featured this month. You’ll also need white-on-white. The third fabric, a print, should include something cats like. For instance, my cats liked to watch birds, eat canteloupe, play with bubbles, and swat at bugs at the window.

Cutting Directions

A – 1 – 6 ½” square cat print B – 2 – 5 1/8” + squares (5

3/16

”) cut once diagonally C – 2 – 7” squares cut once diagonally

Sewing Directions

With right sides together, center the bias edges of 2 B triangles over opposite sides of A and sew the seam. Press the triangles to the outside. Repeat the centering and sewing of the other two white-on-white triangles to A. After adding all the white triangles, the block should measure 9” square. Repeat this by sewing C triangles to the white-on-white B pieces. It is helpful to trim off the “dog ears” as the pieces are sewn. Those are the little excess triangle points that stick out beyond the seam allowance. Trimming them off helps the block/quilt top lie flatter. That’s all there is to it! When these blocks are all sewn together into a quilt top, there will be a variety of kitties, a lot of milky white to brighten it up, and lots of things cats find fascinating.

Charms and Strips—This is a fabric exchange, not a lottery!

April’s theme: Cat Prints

May’s theme: Black and White Prints

It’s not too late to join us! We have been getting a wonderful assortment of fabrics this year. Cut either charms or strips or both with the following directions from quilt shop quality fabric. You can then drop them off at the table and then next month you can pick up your bag that will be filled with a variety of prints!

For Strips –cut (12) 2½ inch strips the width of the fabric.

Please cut accurately.

Place your strips in a zip-lock bag with your name and phone number on it.

For Charms— Cut 24 matching pairs (yes, that’s a total of 48 squares) of 5” squares. You can have different

fabrics, or all 48 squares can be the same. Cut accurately, and no selvages or selvage holes. Please cross stack the fabric pairs for better sorting. Place your charms in a zip-lock bag with your name and phone number on it.

Please check out our boards on Pinterest http://www.pinterest.com/charmsandstrips/ for links to pattern ideas. If you have

questions, please email me at [email protected].

“One small cat changes coming home to an empty house to coming home.” –Pam Brown Cats have been around since before the dawn of civilization, but to look at a contented cat you get the impression that it is the reason civilization evolved. I’m not sure there is anything more inscrutable and self-centered than a cat. Us humans can do anything we like as long as we provide food, clean litter, and an occasional warm lap for our cat. Otherwise, we are simply uninteresting. That said, I admit that I love cats and kittens and have owned several. My entire family are cat lovers and off the top of my head I can picture the faces and name quite a few – Bobo, Amanda, Smokey, Precious, Sugar, California, Chaps, Chelsea, Friend, Kiki, Old Arthur, Tux, Houdini, Pooky, Blanche, and Jimmy. Unlike dogs, cats are not known for their heroic acts on humanity’s behalf. No cat is about to drag a screaming toddler from a burning building, but a dog might. However, Sam Stall, the author of 100 Cats Who Changed Civilization, has found a few outstanding examples of cathood and has divided them into four categories: muses; pioneers, antiheroes, and heroes. Here is the short version of a few of their stories.

Muses: Cattarina, the tortoushell feline companion of Edgar Allan Poe, served as a template for one of the

greatest horror stories ever written – The Black Cat. A tomcat named Macek, inspired scientist Nicola Tesla to begin his world-changing study of electricity.

Pioneers: A Canadian cat named Snowball, supplied a few strands of her hair in the apprehension of a killer and

revolutionized criminal forensics. A feline named F. D. C. Willard gave his name to (thereby coauthoring) a research paper on low-energy physics. A black cat called Colby was awarded an executive MBA.

Antihero: Not all influential cats who changed history did so in a positive way. Being a bird lover it pains me to tell

the story of a light-house keeper’s cat named Tibbles. Tibbles was brought to the Stephens Island lighthouse to catch mice, but instead single-handedly wiped out the entire species of Stephen Island Wrens. He found the little wingless birds much tastier than the island rodents.

Heroes: Mr. Stall tells the stories of several cats noted for bravery and resourcefulness. One large cat named

Mourka, assisted the Russian forces during the bloody battle for Stalingrad. Trixy, a tiny but voratious hunter, kept her human supplied with pigeons to eat during his unjust imprisonment in the infamous Tower of London. More recently, Tommy used a phone to call the police when his wheelchair-bound human was incapacitated.

It is no wonder that cat prints abound! Cynthia and I are really excited to see what you bring to share. Whatever

you bring, as long as it has cats it will be pu-r-r-r-r-fect. Here are some more fun cat quotes…

“In nine lifetimes, you’ll never know as much about your cat as your cat knows about you.” –Michel de Montaigne “Anyone who considers protocol unimportant has never dealt with a cat.” –Robert A. Heinlein

“After scolding one’s cat one looks at its face and is seized by the ugly suspicion that it understood every word. And has filed it for reference.” –Charlotte Gray

“Thousands of years ago cats were worshipped as gods. Cats have never forgotten this.” –Anonymous

“Cats’ hearing apparatus is built to allow the human voice to easily go in one ear and out the other.” –Stephen Baker

“My idea of absolute happiness is to be in bed on a rainy day with a quilt, a cat, and a dog.” –Anne Lamott Featured Artist Show Janice Harding Harris (360) 574-1858 or [email protected] Sandi Miller (360) 573-5459 or [email protected] The Featured Artist Show for 2015 will be featuring the works of four lovely sisters. They are Jane Dudley, Judy Oakes, Audrey Prothero, and Mary Morey. We are excited to see their beautiful quilts. An assistant is needed for this committee. This person needs to be available to help during the week of October 20 to 25. Please volunteer for this delightful job!

Be sure to mark your calendars for October 29- Nov 1, 2015. We’ll be back at the Alton Collins retreat center near Sandy, OR. The theme is Autumn Brilliance. We’re getting an early start because summer break limits the time we have to sign everyone up. Sign-ups being at the May CCQ meeting and will require a $50 deposit (check or cash). You’ll receive your packet at that time. The balance will be due in September. Cost for a three-night, triple or quad room will run $260. We have single and double rooms available at a slightly higher fee. You can check out the retreat center on line at www.collinsretreatcenter.org. It’s a beautiful facility and we’re excited to be there.

Please let us know if you would like to work on the fall retreat or contribute gifts or participate in some way. You can help by making or donating one item for drawings, or one for each of the 40 or so quilters there. I’ll be starting my gifts early.
