Prepared by: Andrea Salazar Morgan – 2012-2013 Chair
Tina Gianquitto – 2012-2013 Chair ElectJunko Munakata Marr – 2012-2013 Past Chair
Deb Lasich – Associate Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion
This report summarizes the activities of the President’s Committee on Diversity for the 2012-2013 academic year. We thank President Scoggins for his continuing support and the financial investment to promote diversity at Mines. Highlights of the year include
High profile and impactful speakers, providing broad perspectives and appeal to faculty, staff and students,
More focused and inclusive week of diversity-related programs and events in January, made possible by substantial continued internal and external sponsorships, and
Continued attention to institutional diversity strategy work.
ProgrammingThe President’s Committee on Diversity has a focus on enhancing campus climate through educational programming, one of the president’s four priorities for diversity at Mines. Programs held in 2012-2013 are summarized in Table 1. Of particular note was the visit by Melissa Emerson from Colorado State University who spoke on Conflict Management at the President’s Diversity Breakfast to approximately 140 Mines staff and faculty. In addition, Ms. Emerson met with the President, the Provost, two college Deans, several Department Heads, and members of the President’s Executive team. Ms. Emerson returned to campus in the spring to present at the Mines Leadership Summit and at the SmartGeo Leadership Seminar.
The collection of programs and events as part of DeltaDays is also noteworthy (Table 1). This year the committee continued to focus the content to be more inclusive in order to bring the campus together and broaden the audience. The week began with the traditional Faculty and Staff MLK Day Breakfast, mid-day birthday cake, and evening entertainment. Subsequent activities progressed through a logical sequence of self-discovery, why diversity matters, and what individuals can do to enhance the campus environment.
DeltaDays included 11 events and programs, and had attendance of over 950 students, faculty, and staff. This does not include the 800 students, faculty, and staff who also took part in the MLK Day Birthday Cake Celebration.

President’s Committee on Diversity 2012-2013 Annual Report
1. Given the newly created Associate VP of Diversity and Inclusion, review the current structure and purpose of the Diversity Committee. There has been much discussion regarding the current structure of the Diversity Committee, and the need to refine the membership attributes.
2. To engage more faculty and students in attendance at diversity events. While more can be done here, progress was made in attracting more faculty and students to participate in the diversity-related events.
In addition, the President also asked the Committee to address the following areas:
1. Engage more of the “middle”Through more deliberate programming, we focused on topics, venues, and times that would reach a broader spectrum of the campus. We provided programming for students, faculty and staff, and scheduled them at different times of the day and week, particularly DeltaDays events. The subject matter included conflict management, social justice, privilege, personality styles, cultural art, as well as race, gender, and GLBT education.
2. Develop new programming for DeltaDaysWe developed new programming, more focused events, and better advertising for DeltaDays (see below). To help with attendance, and the impact of each event, we plan to use a similar format as this year, but with a few less events next year.

Diversity Committee MembershipExecutive committee members are shown in Appendix A, and committee members are shown in Appendix B. By the end of the spring semester, the committee had 36 members. At this time, the committee is structured so that any faculty, staff, or student can attend meetings and become official members upon an annual vote. There is concern about managing an increasing number of members. This continued to be discussed by the executive committee this summer.
