Literature is a cultural pillar of everyrace. Literati have been privileged to inheritthe legacy of Myanmar literature throughouthistory. So, such legacy must be handed downto posterity without fail.

The government is giving a helping handto building a firm structure of national literature.While helping in all aspects for emergence offlourishing literature, literary awards are alsobeing presented on a yearly basis for fineliterary works.

For development of the literary world, 14national literary awards and Sarpay Beikmanmanuscript awards in 12 genres are presentedevery year. Similarly, Pakokku U Ohn PeLiterary Award, Thuta Swesone LiteraryAward and Sayawun Tin Shwe Literary Awardare given away every year.

At such a time, Tun Foundation is alsodistributing literary awards and has presentedthem for the fifth time. Bomb blast kills up to six at Pakistanbus station

KHAR, 4 April—A bomb exploded at a bus terminal in northwest Pakistanon Monday, killing up to six people in the sixth bomb attack in as many daysto strike the country, police said.

The bomb exploded in the small town of Jandol in the District of LowerDir, 90 kilometres (56 miles) from the Capital Islamabad. Pakistani troopsfought a major offensive to expunge the Taleban from the area nearly twoyears ago.

BANGKOK, 4 April—Heavy rains have eased in southern Thailand,where heavy downpours and landslides over nearly two weeks has left 45people dead.

The government disaster agency says more than 40,000 people areliving in temporary shelters in three provinces that remain flooded.

The agency said Monday that electricity was slowly being restored inthe hardest-hit province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, where the majority ofdeaths occurred. Rail service remained severely disrupted in much ofsouthern Thailand. Weather forecasts said scattered showers were expectedacross the region this week.

Indonesia’s Meteorology and GeophysicsAgency reported that the quake took place at 03:06am Jakarta Time (2006 GMT Sunday) with epicentreat 293 km southwest of Cilacap, Central Java andwith the depth at 10 km. The intensity of the quakewas felt at Cilacap of Central Java and Pangandaranof West Java, as well as Denpasar of Bali island andBogor town near the Capital Jakarta, Jajat Jatmika,an official of the agency, told Xinhua by phone.

Quake rocks Delhi, northernIndia, Nepal

NEW DELHI, 4 April—A moderate 5.7-magnitudeearthquake shook the Nepal-India border region onMonday with tremors felt as far away as the Indiancapital of New Delhi.

The epicentre of the quake was in the borderregion between Nepal and India, a seismologist atthe Indian Meteorological Department said.

The quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometres (sixmiles), he said. “It was a moderate quake... with ashallow to moderate focal depth,” said the official,who asked not to be identified.

No damage or casualties were immediatelyreported. The tremor was also felt in two towns in farwestern Nepal, Dhangadi and Mahendranagar,Nepal’s private Avenues Television reported.

performing branch offices in the coming quarter, including one in its hometownof Charlotte, NC.

BofA told investors in March the bank, known as a firm that thrives onexpansion, intends to close 10 percent of its branches in the next two years.In a regulatory filing, it said it closed 43 branches in the first quarter. Bankspokeswoman Tara Burke said the number was actually 55 and explained thediscrepancy was due to a “lag” between the calendar and the filing process.

The 68 additional closings would likely occur within the next 90 days, asthey were posted by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, whichregulates Bank of America and requires 90 days of warning time forcustomers. The identification of fournew genes associatedwith Alzheimer’s diseaseis a major advance thatwill help improveunderstanding of whatcauses the condition, sayscientists who pinpoint-ed the genes.

Each of the genesindividually contributesto the risk of developingAlzheimer’s disease,

PHILADELPHIA, 4 April—Advertising groupInterpublic Group owns a stake in Facebook thatcould be valued at roughly $200 million to $300million, The Financial Times reported.

The exact size of the stake has not been disclosed,but people close to Interpublic say it owns slightly lessthan a half percent of Facebook, the newspaper saidin its electronic edition. Interpublic paid less than $5million for the stake in 2006, the newspaper said.

Interpublic’s stake of 0.4 percent would be worth$200 million, based on a Facebook valuation of about$50 billion, the newspaper said.

Minister Dr Pe Thet Khin delivered an openingspeech, saying that in Myanmar, malaria is to beprevented and eradicated as first priority. Like in otherSouth East Asia nations, malaria has been a publichealth problem in Myanmar. Malaria occurs in 284

townships across the country, especially in rural areasand border areas. According to the figures ofDepartment of Health, about 0.5 million people wereinfected with malaria in 2009 and 974 patients, dead.Now, prevention and eradication are being carried out.It needs to prevent Artemisinin-resistant problem. Indoing so, participation of ministries relating to Ministry

of Health and companies is very important. Due tofunds, drug-resistant control and prevention anderadication of malaria would be accelerated in the yearto come.
