www.lps.org.uk Dear Members, Like so many of us closely watching, hopefully we have seen the new floor price and recovery of the barrel will now slowly and steadily start. On a related note, this is a good me to capitalise on the free of charge membership to LPS! We have decided for the first me to collect presentaons from the New Technology seminar and make down- load of the same available to all current registered members for 2015. Please see the website for registraon forms. We had a good start to the year with a really impressive one day New Technology seminar on 29th January. We managed to get representaon from some companies with really nice new ideas along with the larger companies showing us what’s new to the market. Some really fantasc presentaons which I know where enjoyed by all from the feedback we got. Well done to all involved in making this happen and parcular Liz Davis for organising all speakers. The next evening meeng will be help on Tuesday 10th February. This talk, which will be presented by Professor Mike Lovell, considers the topics raised at the SPWLA topical conference in March 2014 'Educang the Petrophysi- cist' the conclusions reached, and the developments since. For our next one day seminar we be looking at “What’s so special about core analysis?”. This is the latest in the “Basic FE” seminars of which we hold one each year. It’s aimed at giving a good introducon to core analysis and is aimed specifically at Petrophysicist and Geosciensts. Topics cover a lovely broad range of subjects from how to acquire good core data to more in depth maers such as weability and relave permeability measurements. The seminar will be held on 26th March at the Geological Society and full details including registraon can be found on the website. I look forward to seeing you at these upcoming events. LPS Full Day Seminar

What's So Special About Core Analyses?

Thursday 26th March 2015

London Petrophysical Society Newsletter Issue 2 2015

On Thursday 26th March 2015 the London Petrophysical Society will be holding a one-

day seminar entitled "What's So Special About Core Analyses?" at the

Geological Society, Burlington House, London.

This is the latest in our line of "Basic FE" seminars, and is intended as an introduction to

Core Analyses for Petrophysicists and other Geoscientists. This one-day seminar will

provide a basic understanding and vocabulary for professionals from a wide-variety of

backgrounds and it should work to improve the way we can work together as a team to

achieve effective integration of core data into the understanding of our reservoirs.

Agenda

Overview - petrophysical fundamentals - porosity, permeability, capillarity

Acquiring good core data and getting it to the lab

Introduction to analysing cores - plugging, cleaning/drying, basic analysis and some

basic QC

Calibrating log-to-core for porosity, electrical properties and saturations

Wettability and Relative Permeability

Capillary pressure and height-function

Core Analysis in Unconventional Reservoirs

Southern North Sea SCAL case study

Insight to core space processes and their implication

Registration £150 for members and non members, (LPS is not VAT registered).

There are a limited number of free places for Students, but you must register in advance.

Includes lunch and refreshments.

To attend please download a Registration form and email to Ian Draper, VP Seminars.

Dick Woodhouse Award

Submission deadline 31st May 2015

Annual prize trophy & cash award (£1000)

The Dick Woodhouse Award to Young Professionals

Guidelines for Submissions Why: This award was instigated by the LPS to celebrate the outstanding contribution that Dick Woodhouse made to our industry during his 45 year career. It is designed to encourage the pursuit of excellence in young professional petrophysi-cists and other geoscientists involved in Formation Evaluation. Who: It is open to oil and gas industry professionals and post-doctoral re-searchers with up to three years industry experience, who are based in UK compa-nies or research centres, or UK based workers on short term over-seas assignments. What: The annual prize consists of a trophy and a cash award of £1000. How to apply: Qualifying young professionals are encouraged to submit a conference style poster (or paper) to LPS committee for review. The topic should be an inspiring and innovative project or piece of work based on formation evaluation using borehole data such as logs, core, pressures and fluids. Integration with other subsurface disciplines is encouraged, as are original contributions on theoretical and applied aspects of petrophysics, including both open-hole and cased-hole well logging as well as core analysis. Case histories and interpretation are also of interest. All material presented will be kept confidential.

2014 winner Monika Adaszkiewicz's submission was " The Value of Data Integration in Tight Gas Sands". An-alysing shallow marine sandstones is very challenging due to low porosity, complex mineralogy and naturally occurring fractures. Robust petrophysical analysis in this tight sandstone reservoir required that all possible sources of data were used. This resulted in establishing porosity and water saturation models that correlate with the core data and Magnetic Resonance logs.

The 2015 Award is now open, please see the London Petrophysical Society webiste; www.lps.org.uk.
