A Note from the Director

Washington Heights or “Quisqueyano” Heights due to its extremely large Dominican Republic (Spanish-speaking) population, is just recovering from a severe crime epidemic and experiencing a forever

dwindling crime rate.

Our leading player in the musical, “Usnavi”, strives to live out the common passions of a Dominican Immigrant. Live in cheap housing, earn an education and hopefully find greater success after moving away from the neighborhood.

A common theme in this show deals with the pressures of staying close to home/neighborhood and supporting the desires and expectations of family and friends or dealing with the fears of getting out of their comfort zone and taking a chance out in the world. Nina Rosario and Vanessa struggle with different variations of this in our show.

You will be hard pressed not to get up during the show and dance in the aisles. Some of the most contagious dance music styles are captured in the beautiful score. Salsa music and hip hop dominate the show and will really give the audience a flavor of the culture. Jesse Sanchez has carefully crafted a band of extremely talented musicians who can not only play this difficult score, but also keep up with the heavy demands of the show, which is almost 2 ½ hours of relentless instrumentation.

One of the most exciting aspects of the show is the dance concepts. We were fortunate enough to cast a show that was talented enough to handle a much heavier workload of dance. As such, our Choreographers, Val and Swap, did a wonderful job executing razor sharp, precision choreography to help tell our story and rapidly advance the plot. Our challenge was integrating enough movement to keep the audience engaged in the show, but also not take away from the story with too much dance.

The most spectacular part of the show is the ethnic diversity. It’s a hard-pressed ordeal these days to find a Bay Area musical with more than a few minority actors in the cast and we have managed to collect some of the most talented Latin actors around the Bay Area.

All that being said, I am incredibly excited and honored that we are able to share this exciting and proud-full production with you all. Cheers!

Kriselle Kelsey (Vanessa) Kriselle makes her WVLO debut in this production and says this role has been a “dream role” of hers since 2008 and this experience has truly turned into a dream come true. Her extensive list of credits includes “Les Miserables” (Eponine) & “West Side Story” (Maria), both at Mt. Eden HS, Mayzie in Starstruck’s “Seussical” and “Rent” for SCP. She will be performing the role of Diana Morales in our “A Chorus Line” next Spring. Kriselle is currently a student, earning her BA in Theater/Directing while she directs/choreographs for Mt. Eden HS fall musical production. She is forever grateful for the unconditional love & support she receives from her loved ones and dedicates every performance to them. “In The Heights” has changed my life. I hope you all enjoy our journey through a couple of days in the life of what it’s like..in Washington Heights. Wepa!

Andrew Kracht (Piragua Guy) Andrew feels honored to be your neighborhood shaved ice man in his WVLO debut and to fill the King George shoes in the pre-Hamilton. His impressive list of theatrical credits includes “Spring Awakening”, “Kiss Me, Kate” and “Anything Goes” for BBB; “Young Frankenstein”, “In The Heights” and “Miss Saigon” with PAP and others too numerous to mention. A proud SCU double degree graduate and TBA Adjudicator, Andrew is by day the Box Office, Operations, and Social Media Manager at PAP. Up next, Andrew can’t wait to get back in touch with his tap dancing roots as Constantine in PAP’s “A Day In Hollywood/A Night In The Ukraine” in January! Gracias and amor to his friends and family, especially to his own Camila and Kevin. Alabanza!

Arielle Lukban (Ensemble) Arielle is excited to be joining WVLO for her first musical since 2009 when she appeared in Mount Eden HS productions of “Evita” (Eva Peron), “Joseph …Dreamcoat” (Ensemble), “Miss Saigon” (Ensemble) and “Guys & Dolls” (Ensemble). She would like to thank everyone at WLO for welcoming her; it made her really enjoy the experience. She also would like to thank her loved ones for their continuous support and love. She hopes you all enjoy the show!

Mark Macaspac (Sonny) Mark is another newcomer to WVLO and is humbled to be one of this awesome cast! His previous roles include Mr. Jefferson in SCP’s “Rent”, John in MEHS’s “Miss Saigon” and Nicely Nicely Johnson in “Guys & Dolls” for MEHS. He extends his deepest thanks to the amazing ITH cast and staff and to his loved ones who contantly support the pursuit of his dreams.

Jon Nowakowski (Ensemble) Jon is extremely excited for his debut with WVLO! He was last seen at Hillbarn Theatre in the ensemble for “White Christmas”

and has also worked for Great America in On Broadway, CULTure Pop and Boot Scootin’ Boogie! Jon appeared in PAP’s “Legally Blonde” and is seen in Benefit Cosmetic’s “Brow Lookbook”. By day, he works as a Recruiter for Robert Half focusing on recruiting only the best administrative talent in the Bay Area.

Kamille Parungao (Nina Rosario) Kamille makes her WVLO debut in this production, but has several notable credits on her theatrical list; namely, Beth March in “Little Women-the Musical” and Olive Ostrovsky in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” as well as Starstruck Theatre’s “All Shook Up” in 2013. She has spent the last three years working on her Bachelor’s degree which she earned last Spring at SJSU in Chemistry/Biochemistry. Currently, she is volunteering at the Stanford Medical Center Cancer Clinic and continues to work in her undergraduate research lab. She plans to apply to medical school next Fall. In her spare time, Kamille likes to knit and read on her Kindle.

Oklys Pimentel (Usnavi) Oklys is another actor joining WVLO for his first production. Other than performing in “Rent” twice, this is his third musical, but because he is a native of the Dominican Republic, this musical speaks directly to his own experiences. Besides living in the Dominican Republic, he also grew up in Washington Heights which makes playing this role feel like home. During the day he works for Apple and his future goal is to be happy and healthy and keep musical theater in his life in some capacity. He sends special thanks to the staff for believing in him and entrusting him with this role.

Gabriela Reyes (Ensemble) Gabriela makes her WVLO debut after appearing in a production of “Ragtime”. She wanted to be in this show in order to gain more experience in theater. She attends Ohlone College and her future goal is to become a back-up dancer for celebrities, have her own show and star in a movie. In her spare time, her hobbies are make-up and hair, dancing, soccer, softball, and reading, not necessarily in that order.

Frank Sherlock (Bartender) Frank is back for his ninth production with WVLO, having appeared previously in “Sweet Charity”, “White Christmas”, “How To Succeed…”, “Bells Are Ringing”, “9 To 5”, “The Boy Friend”, “Jesus Christ, Superstar”, and “Sugar”. He also played a Detective in SCP’s “Grand Hotel” and has worked on our stage crews for several productions (something he enjoys as much as being onstage!). He was the recipient of our prestigious Jean Hutchins Special Service Award for the 2011-2012 season and is currently serving as a member of our Board of Directors.

Robert Summers (Ensemble) Robert returns for his 18th production with WVLO, his most memorable was in the role of Jim in “Big River” which earned him the ERMA Award for Best Supporting Actor. Other credits on our stage include roles in “Dames At Sea”, “Jesus Christ, Superstar”, “Cats”, “Aida”, “Damn Yankees”, “Will Rogers Follies”, “42nd Street”, “South Pacific”, “How To Succeed…Trying”, (twice) “Camelot”, “King & I”, “Man Of La Mancha”,”Guys & Dolls”, “A Funny Thing…Forum” and “Music Man”. “Into The Woods”, with MPC in “Evita” and “Les Miserables”. Credits also include performances with the SBSC in “Spamalot”, “Les Miserables” and “Big River”. He enjoys magic, guitar, soccer and aikido. By day, Robert is a Software Developer for Unicom Systems. He sends his love to his family for their constant support.

Hueiyen Tsai (Pete’s Crew) Hueiyen is another newcomer to WVLO and actually makes her very first appearance in a musical. She loves this show and missed the musical theatre stage so decided to share her talents with us. She holds a BS in Computer Science and by day works as a Technical Program Manager. Her goal is to be healthy, happy and inspiring to people. She loves reading, singing, baking, drawing and creating with her hands. She extends her thanks to the staff for giving her this opportunity and hopes you enjoy the show as much as we have enjoyed rehearsing and performing it for you!

Maggie Velasquez (Camila Rosario) This marks Maggie’s fifth production with WVLO, having appeared in “My Fair Lady”, “9 To 5”, “Jesus Christ, Superstar” and “Oklahoma”. Her SBMT musicals include “Finian’s Rainbow” and “Ragtime” (one of her favorites) as well as several other productions in the Bay Area. After missing four opportunities to audition for this show, she will finally be able to cross this one off her bucket list. Maggie has been away from the theater world for a spell, enjoying her time as a back-up singer with an 80’s cover band. When she has some down time, she loves sharing it with her two cats and any stray animals. She would also say Thank you for supporting the arts!

Dedrick Weathersby (Benny) Dedrick makes his WVLO debut in this production, but is certainly no stranger to the stage. His impressive list of theatrical credits includes “Ragtime”, “Rent”, “Cinderella”, ”Sweet Charity”, “Tarzan”, “Oklahoma”, “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown”, “Seussical the Musical”, “Noises Off”, “Willy Wonka”, “Annie Get Your Gun”, “Joseph ….Dreamcoat”, “Li’l Abner”, “American Clock”, “Marriage of Bette and Boo” and “The Music Man”. He gives all the glory to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for his grace and mercy on his life’s journey thus far.

MUSICIAN SPOTLIGHTFor this program, we have chosen to spotlight Samuel Cisneros, one of our favorite piano/keyboard artists. He first joined WVLO in 2008 in “Grease” when he replaced “Mom Reynolds” in our pit. His impressive list of other credits includes LTSJ, SBMT, City Lights Theater, BBB, Woodside Theatre, PYT, CMTSJ, SCP, Starting Arts, Por-tola Valley Theatre Conservatory, FOGG Theatre, Tabard Theatre and is on staff at SCU. And many of you who have

attended the STOCtet concerts during the past twenty years will recognize Samuel as their major accompanist for the past nine years!! We always feel very fortunate to welcome this talented pianist to our live orchestras!!

For the past 28 years she has served in various Staff positions, such as SM, ASM, stage crew, lighting crew in addition to assisting most of the other positions. She has served on the Board of Directors for several years and has always received

major support from her husband, Lester, during their 60 years of marriage! Liz is one of our most dedicated volunteers.

She produced our first show of the season last fall and has performed, choreographed and served as a Board Member throughout those years. His last experience was in last season’s “Footloose, the Musical”, being the Lead Producer and in the cast as ‘Principal Clark’. I guess when one is retired, one has a lot of time on his hands. He sends his thanks to his wife, Pat, and sons, Matt and Chris, for their unwavering support of this new “hobby”.Gary Stanford, Jr. (Director) This is Gary’s 3rd tour of duty with WVLO, having choreographed “9 To 5” and appeared on stage in “Nice Work If You Can Get It”. She also choreographed “Fiddler On The Roof” twice in 2013, with PYT & WVLO. She has also performed with Pintello Comedy Theater, SCP, and in “Jesus Christ, Superstar!” and

“Breakin’ Up Is Hard To Do” with WVLO. By day, Valerie practices as a Certified Massage Therapist in Campbell and occasionally teaches jazz & commercial dance at Ariel Dance Productions. She sends special thanks to her mother, Irene, Swap for his “paciencia y fe” throughout this journey, Oanh & the Ariel Dance family and her wonderful husband, Ronnie.

Swapnil Mehta (Choreographer) Swapnil started dancing like other Indians in Indian festivals when he was 10, and never looked back. He took part in many dance competitions and won prizes but his real training started after he came to the USA. He is trained in American dance styles like Hip Hop and Contemporary and is also being trained in Latin dance styles like Salsa. Having Bollywood in his blood from Indian Festivals and learning other international

dance styles, Swap has created his own fusion dance style which he likes to call Bolly Hop. This dance style made him one of the top 20 Indian Dancers in the USA in the dance-based Indian reality show called “Dance India Dance”. We’re delighted to welcome him to our Staff!

Stephen C. Wathen (Production Set Designer/Scenic Artist) Stephen returns for his 75th production design for WVLO, his most recent was “Nice Work If You Can Get It” last season. His extensive list of credits includes

more than 400 stage productions, 25 movies, over a hundred TV series, an animator for the Gumby TV series and a special effects designer for George Luca films. He most recently designed the sets for Starstruck’s “Beauty and the Beast” and is a
