Theatre for All Ages. Tabard.

The task of writing for the theater is quite different from that of creating a popular song. In The Elves and the Shoemaker, the loving relationship of Mamma and Pappa, the magical and quirky elves, the sinister landlord, and the boisterous

townspeople — each of these requires its own style of lyrics and music to match the characters, to advance the story, and to provide dance interludes. It has been a wonderful — and fulfilling — experience to meet that creative challenge. The additional task of composing and performing incidental music for underscoring and scene changes is an especially fun aspect of writing a show. In a transition from a scene with elves into a scene with Mamma and Pappa, the music must start in elfin style and effortlessly segue into the Mamma and Pappa motif. The story, characters, and continuity all must be sustained. I hope you enjoy the music and lyrics of Hoffenberg.

From Jeremy Harris, Composer and Musical Director:

Creating an original piece of theatre has been a magical experience for me. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the steps it has taken to get to the finished product, which you’ll enjoy on stage today. Beginning with a two-page Grimm fairy tale, Jeremy and

I collaborated on a basic storyboard and it grew from there. The creation of characters, scenic development, and content of musical numbers were highlights for me during this process. But once we workshopped our script/score with local performers, and proceeded to cast the actors who would premiere our work, our production began to literally take life before our eyes and it was thrilling. I am thankful for all the love and support my husband, Ron, and three children have shown me during this lengthy process. And now with you, the audience, our adventure is complete. Thank you for being an important part of this journey.

A special thank you to Cathy Cassetta, Tabard Theatre Company. Cathy came to me, as Tabard’s Education and Outreach Director, with the idea of bringing a family piece of theatre to Tabard for the holidays. While we were exploring various family-friendly productions, Cathy asked me if I would be interested in creating a new work for the Tabard audience instead of performing an established theatrical piece. Although I am a journalist, I had not yet entertained the idea of authoring a play or musical. Cathy noted that our mutual friend and colleague, Jeremy Harris, was interested in creating a new musical theatre piece. It seemed like a perfect match and it was; we met to explore this new theatrical relationship and our journey to Hoffenberg began. I appreciate Cathy pointing us down the path so that together, Jeremy and I could find our way through Wester Forest and into Hoffenberg! Thank you, Tabard!

From Jennifer Packard, Playwright and Director:

...A Musical Tale

Welcome to the second of three world premieres Tabard is presenting this season as part of our season of Twists and Turns. One of the fun jobs of producing is putting together the right mix of people to create theatre. Jennifer and Jeremy have

proven to be a very creative and tight team, working collaboratively to bring to life an expanded and musical version of the popular Grimms’ fairy tale. Because this production focuses on giving and family, the designated non-profit is EMQ FamiliesFirst. We all hope you enjoy your visit to the village of Hoffenberg and to Wester Forest. Blessings to you all this holiday season!

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Executive Director:

Journey of the heart. Tabard.

David Baugher (Bryce, Baker) is thrilled to be part of this premiere, his first show with Tabard. Father of three wonderful daughters and a technical writer for Net Optics, David’s local credits include The Music Man (Sunnyvale Community Players), La Cage aux Folles (South Bay Musical Theatre), Best Little Whorehouse (Actors Theatre Center), and Flower Drum Song (West Valley Light Opera). David dedicates the show to his girls, Corey, Haley, and Kasey: “Thanks for letting me play!”

Joyce Davis (Tamsin, Shopkeeper) is new to Tabard, but she is not new to the theatre of life where her career roles unleashed her vocalization talent and passion for communicating and collabor- ating — helping her connect to the audience and release the juiciness of characters on stage. Her excitement of joining the Elves and the Shoemaker cast for such a heart-warming story reminds her of the fun of putting on family shows and singing in a teenage band.

Valerie Doyle (Sandew, Tavern Keeper’s Wife) performs with Pioneer High School’s “Glue Factory,” a group who puts on annual musical productions to benefit the school’s drama department. She’s appeared in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Bells Are Ringing, White Christmas, The Wiz, How to Succeed, and Godspell Jr. This is her first Tabard production. Valerie sends a big hug to her husband and sons for supporting her while she has fun on stage.

Craig Engen (Pappa) has been involved in the SF Bay Area theater community for 14 years. He has worked with such diverse companies as Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Foothill College, Opera San Jose, Shady Shakespeare, and his own company “Three of a Perfect Pair.” Several of his original plays have been produced. He also designs sets, produces, and directs. This is his second show with Tabard Theatre, following his appearance in It’s a Wonderful Life.

Eddie Gilbert (Belanor) is appearing in his third show with Tabard, having just finished taking part in the Conservatory@Tabard Youth Mentorship production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown as Linus and previously appearing in Tin Pan Alley Rag as a member of the ensemble. Eddie thanks his wonderful girlfriend Nikki for being a great support throughout this process. Let’s make a little magic!

Samantha Goes (Shopkeeper’s Daughter) is very excited to be in her first Tabard production. She was last seen as Young Dream Heidi in Heidi for Children’s Musical Theater San Jose. She has been taking voice lessons with Brigitte Doss-Johnson for the past three years and jazz dance lessons with Marie Stinnett for one. Samantha is a seven-year-old second-grader at Brooktree School. She loves animals and plans to become a veterinarian when she grows up.

Shows include Sex, Lies and the I.R.S.; Deathtrap; and Inherit the Wind. Dan’s former experience was in college and community theater in Idaho, Colorado, and Alaska; he’s had a ball meeting and working with such wonderful, passionate, and talented people in a warmer clime. “Hang on to your seat and enjoy the show...”

Keith Pennings (Landlord) is performing in his fifth show with Tabard. He has recently been seen in Conservatory@Tabard’s You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown (and was also in Tabard’s very first production, Charlie Brown); The Tin Pan Alley Rag; and Lady, Be Good. When not acting, Keith runs his own after-school music program for fourth- and fifth-graders and performs with his band, Beat Street.

Steve Schneickert (Bosmer, Tavern Keeper) returned to the stage in 2011, following a 14-year hiatus due to complications from MS, via a Tabard benefit show and performance in It’s A Wonderful Life. She has also performed with several other theater groups in the area. She loves when she has lines to say.
