Lesson Suggestions by Deborah A. Imiolo

Learning Goal: The children will practice right–left alternation in the context of a melody on the barred instruments.Materials: Barred instruments PowerPointKey: F Lydian

Lesson Suggestions1. Instruct the students to discuss this quote and the questions contained in it: Walt Disney once said, “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we’re curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.” • What new doors have opened for you because of your curiosity? • What was the outcome?2. Instruct the students to perform the hand-clapping activity from the second slide of the PowerPoint. This rhythm matches the rhythm of the bass part. The teacher will recite the poem while this rhythm is practiced.3. Instruct the students to create and perform their own hand-clapping pattern, keeping the rhythm the same, but playing with the body percussion (still from the second PowerPoint slide). The teacher will continue to recite the poem while this rhythm is practiced.4. Students will stamp their right foot on “BE” (slide 3).5. Students will stamp their left foot on “Go” (slide 4).6. Students will snap their fingers on “Curious” (slide 5).7. Students will clap their hands on “forward and” (slide 6).8. Students will pat their legs on “open doors and then” and on “my friend” (slide 7).9. Split the class in two with half of the class performing the ostinato with a partner and half of the class performing the poem with body percussion.10. Direct students to go to their instruments and remove the high D and low C (slide 8).11. Students will play B on “BE” (slide 9).12. Students will play G on “Go” (slide 10).13. Students will play C on “Curious” (slide 11).14. Students will play F on the words “Forward” and “Friend” (slide 13).15. Students will play G–F–E–D or “G down to D” on the words “Go open Doors” (slide 14).16. Change the word “Curious” from just C to C–B–A in the rhythm taught previously (slide 16).17. Students will play F–E–D on “For-ward-and” (slide 17).18. Students will add F–A to G–F–E–D or “G down to D” on the words “Go open Doors” (slide 18). Like G–F–E–D–F–A or “Go open D–F–A.”19. Students will play G–E–F on the words “Go my friend” (slide 19).20. Have the students practice the song on their own.

Putting it all together21. Demonstrate the BX ostinato based on the original hand-clapping exercise taught at the beginning of the lesson.22. Put the parts together (BX and the melody).23. Teach the interlude by following the sequence suggested in the lesson plan.24. Have fun with this Lydian Mode piece!
