What we saw happening with the 9th graders…

When students came in to research, we noticed the following habits:

1) The students used databases instead of Google the majority of the time.

2) The students could easily complete searches on the library catalog and find the books they needed on the shelves.

3) We knew most of the students’ names or at least recognized them.

4) The students would approach us with questions about anything, library related or not.

Page 55: Presented at the Georgia Conference on Information Literacy by Marnie Utz and Steven Yates, Librarians Spain Park High School, Hoover, Alabama

Other effects…

We forged a strong bond with the business tech teachers.

One of the business tech teachers nominated us for Teacher of the Quarter

We would get to watch the 9th graders’ information literacy skills progress for the next four years.

Because we knew each 9th grader had received the same “training,” we had a better feel for how to guide them in the years to come.
