An Interfaith Panel Puts A Personal Face on ReligionAt the beginning of the fall semester, Santa Clara High School students were offered a unique opportunity to meet and engage inan interfaith dialogue with representatives of four major world religions: Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. As 60students gathered in the library, their excitement was obvious. This was the first panel of its kind and an integral part of theirstudies. The Importance of Tracking Annual Student PerformanceTo assess students' knowledge of the California content standards, public schools are required to administer the CaliforniaStandards Tests (CSTs) for History–Social Science. Each year, these tests are administered to students in Grade 8 and in Grades 9-11 who have completed U.S. History and World History courses.

Understanding Muslim Students: Fostering an Inclusive EnvironmentDesigned for K-12 district administrators and teachers as well as faculty in colleges and schools ofeducation, department chairs, deans and pre-service teachers, this seminar provides valuable informationand guidance for interaction with Muslim students and their families, while helping build an inclusivelearning environment for all students.

According to the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics, the number ofstudents in public schools who belong to a minority ethnic group had increased from 22% in 1972 to 43%in 2003. Diversity awareness training by ING provides best practices for integrating Muslim students whocan also come from varying cultural backgrounds. This training is an essential component of ongoingprofessional development for teachers and school administrators.

DescriptionThis seminar begins with a conversation about common stereotypes relating to American Muslims andtheir faith followed by an overview of Muslim traditions and practices, as well as pertinent contemporaryissues, and their implications for Muslim students. The seminar covers federal laws and education codespertaining to teaching about religion. It also addresses the topic of religious practice in the public schoolsystem. It concludes with tips for interacting with Muslim students in a post 9/11 environment whileensuring an inclusive and safe learning environment for all students where they can fulfill their potentialand perform their best. Educators and administrative leaders will have the opportunity to share theirexperiences about teaching in today’s diverse classrooms.
