BackstorySmallpox

On Friday January 21st, 2017, disaster hit La Salle High School, they had been struck by bioterrorism. Scientists, government staff, and school staff had to work long hours in order to solve this and keep everyone safe. After long hours of studies they have found

the host of the disease that spread to many students. It all started in lunch on February 2nd, the water from the soda machines was contaminated by the smallpox virus on purpose from the company that refills the machines. That company was working against the

US with another company from Japan. Throughout the course of ten weeks more and more students and staff weren't going to school because of "fever". This is when the school staff started getting suspicious. Then on Monday February 18th, 300 kids went

to school with fever and rashes as well as 200 kids stayed home with fever and rashes. This is when the school decided to report it and call 911. After calling 911 the school was put on lock down and the CDC sent there field help and CDC department from Mercy

Hospital got involved.

DescriptionOf agents

Smallpox is an infectious disease that is caused by the Variola Virus. The Variola Virus is a member of the genus Orthopoxvirus in the Poxviridae family. Victims of smallpox develop a large

amount of pustular lesions. These pustular lesions can appear on a person's face and body. Smallpox can be spread through various forms. Both inhalation and direct contact with scabs and

(or) pustular material from skin lesions can lead to the contamination of another with Smallpox. Smallpox must pass from person to person in a continuing chain of infection and is spread by inhalation of air droplets or aerosols. About fourteen days after infection, the patient typically

becomes feverish and has serious aching pains and weakness. Following these symptoms then a rash begins to develop. This rash develops over the face and spreads to the extremities. Shortly

after, the rash becomes vesicular and pustular. The victims is in grand pain as the pustular lesions grow. Slowly, scabs form, which leave marked scars. Following into the second week of suffering is death. The virus can spread through contaminated objects which include bedding or clothing. Smallpox can only be spread by humans not animal or insects. The incubation period is twelve

days. The period of communicability lasts until all the pustular lesions have turned into scabs and the scabs have fallen off.

Preventative

Measures

After smallpox was eradicated in the United States in 1972, routine small pox vaccination stoped in the U.S. Now the vaccine is only available for those who work in with the smallpox virus and

other similar disease in laboratories and research centers. The U.S. Government also has enoughvaccine to vaccinate every person in the United States in case of a smallpox emergency. Those

who work in laboratories with the replication-competent vaccinia viruses and recombinant viruses developed from replication-competent vaccinia viruses should be vaccinated with ACAM2000.

They should revaccinated every 10 years with ACAM2000.

Infection Control Practices

Those who work in laboratories with the replication-competent vaccinia viruses and recombinant viruses developed from replication-competent vaccinia viruses should be vaccinated with ACAM2000.

They should revaccinated every 10 years with ACAM2000. The following should be followed when attending to a Smallpox patient:

a) Negative pressure room b) N95 mask should be worn

c) Cohort cases if unable to provide private rooms d) Gowns and gloves

e) Hand-washing f) Dedicated patient care equipment

Patients should be stationed in a room with air pressure being monitored in relation to the passageway

& near by areas; 6-12 air exchanges per hour; appropriate release of air to the outside or monitored high energy filtration of air preceding movement to other areas in the healthcare facility; door must

stay closed. Limit the transportation of patients to medical purposes only. All items shall be autoclaved or disposed of. All laundry, linens, and gowns must be autoclaved before being taken to the laundry. If use of common items is unavoidable all reusable equipment should not be used for the care of another

patient, until it has been disinfected.

Discharge Management & Post Mortem Care

Patients will not be discharged until they are no longer infectious. Airborne & contact precautions should be used.

Post Exposure Management

No, decontamination of patients that are affected by smallpox but there are precautions to help patients recover from symptoms. Decontamination of environment all surfaces should be wiped

down with standard hospital disinfectants such as sodium hypochlorite quaternary ammonium compounds

Plan of Action

This then called for a plan. First the student with symptoms and without symptoms would be separated, one subject would be tested before others in order to know what disease it was, and air conditioning will be turned off in case the virus was airborne. After the first test it was said to be that the strand of smallpox was not airborne and can only be

spread through direct contact or blood. Those without the symptoms would be put in the cafeteria and those with the symptoms would be out in the main building classrooms. Like it could easily be spread by blood those with cuts were

put in separate classrooms. Student and staff were asked to sit separated and keep from coming into contact with each other. Then all students and staff from la Salle would be tested by CDC field staff in order to insure that all those with

and without the disease (no symptoms) would be separated. Those who were cleared would be reported into the gym and those who were not cured would be reported into the student learning center. Then those kids who did not attend

school that day and the families of all students were asked to report to Mercy Hospital where they had already separated a special section in order to test them. After all students were clearly separated those who were cleared were allowed to be picked up by there parents after they got tested from Mercy as an extra precaution. Those who had been contaminated with the smallpox virus would be asked to stay in school ( they will be provided with necessary food and care) until a form of treatment would be decided. The last precaution that would be taken is that the whole city of Miami

would be asked to watch for symptoms and report to the hospital in case of any symptoms.
