Our Triple Bottom Line Philosophy
Slide no 409/11/08
So, how does this apply to our fleet?
Slide no 509/11/08
For Novo Nordisk, an environmentally friendly fleet contains vehicles that:
• meet the job needs of our drivers (can carry all materials needed)
• are fuel efficient• reduce the company’s carbon footprint as stated in
our goals (5%/year for next 5 years)• stay within budgetary guidelines• are safe for our drivers• are easy to drive and maintain• may or may not meet the driver’s family needs as
long as it meets their job requirements

An environmentally friendly fleet can contain a mixture of:
•4-cylinder engine vehicles•hybrid vehicles•alternative fuel vehicles (E85, bio-diesel,
etc.)•best-in-class mpg rated vehicles for SUVs,
minivans, etc.

In addition to vehicles, an environmentally friendly fleet contains drivers who:
•Have been informed/trained on how to drive to reduce emissions and conserve fuel.
•Are committed to reducing greenhouse gases and willing to work toward achieving environmental sustainability.

What is Novo Nordisk doing?
• Set goal to reduce carbon footprint by 5% each year for next 5 years for total reduction of 25% by 2012.
• Included hybrids, 4-cylinder sedans, and more fuel efficient vehicles on selectors.
• Monitor drivers’ gas usage for out of policy issues.• Required all drivers to take a “Driving Green” module on-line• Other recommendations include:
• going back to only offering 4-wheel drive vehicles to Snowbelt drivers
• creating separate Level 1 selectors (rep level) to more closely match job needs

Problems Encountered
• Availability of hybrids from manufacturers• Continued poor perception of 4-cylinder engines by
drivers• Company’s desire to provide “better” selector than
other pharma companies—hesitant to remove SUV’s and minivans.
• Drivers are conflicted between “doing the right thing” and getting the type of vehicle they really want!

Solutions
• Make small changes – baby steps still get results.• Constant communication to drivers
• How are we doing vs. our goals• Who’s making a difference• Information on environmental issues/what they can do to
help
• Constant education of upper level management• Keep up with current/future trends, products,
developments, etc.
