Steps for preparing effective oral presentation

Seven steps are essential for successful oral presentations.

1. Determine the purpose of your presentation

3. Select the main idea/theme for the message

4. Research the topic

Collect facts, data and information related to your topic and add new facts to the central theme.

5. Organize the data and write the draft

A good speech consists of an introduction, a body and a conclusion.

6. Planning visual aids and other devices

Visual aids give presentations a formal and professional look.

7. Rehearse the talk

Rehearsal makes you more comfortable with your material. Keep on revising where necessary.

A few points about the oral presentations.

Always imagine the audience in front of you.

Use transitional phrases and sentences to show the listeners the relationships between sections of your report.

Take each of the main points one at a time and learn to present each with its supporting material as a unit.

Mark in the margin of your speech where each visual aid is to be displayed.

Anticipate questions from your audience. Jot them on paper and consider thoughtful answers.

Stop at the allotted time. Edit and practice your speech in such a manner that you consume only the allotted time.
