    People are usually confused and ask themselves when I

    should use them or if they go before or after thes.

    What are apostrophes used for?

     Apostrophes are used to show possession and omission.

    Possession is when you own something. Omission is when letters are missing from a word.

     APOSTROPHES TO SHOW POSSESSION (RULES)

    To show or indicate possession the possessive form of a noun is shown as follows:

    In the singular, the possessive form is made by adding –'s For example:

     bird the bird's nest

     boy  the boy's football

     school the school's classroom

    When the plural form of a noun is made by adding –s to the singular, the possessive

    is shown by adding an apostrophe (') after the plural, that is to say- the possessive isshown by adding an apostrophe after the –s (s'). For example:

     bird the birds' nests

      boy  the boys' footballs

      school the schools' classrooms

    When the plural form of a noun isnotmade by adding –s (irregular plural), thepossessive is shown by adding –'s.For example:

     men the men's cars

     children the children 'sbooks

     women the women 's changing room

    (RULES)

    To indicate when a letter or letters have been

    missed out of a word(when a word or words have

    been shortened of the written and spoken form of

    a word).For example:

    Ididn't understand that.It's not fair. Youweren't

    paying attention.

     did not - didn't

     it is - it's

     I am - I'm

    I will - I'll
