With the constant expansion in power systems, the demand of high performance computing for power system adequacy and security analysis has been increased rapidly.

The commonly used energy management systems are unable to provide solutions to meet such requirement of high performance computing and data and resource sharing for its operations.

Grid computing can provide efficient and effective computing services in order to meet the increasing need of high performance computation in power system reliability and security analysis.

It can also provide remote access to distributed resources of the power system for providing effective and fast mechanism of monitoring and control of power systems.

Grid computing is a form of parallel and distributed computing that involves coordination and sharing of computing, application, data storage and network resources across dynamic and geographically distributed organizations.

It provides high computing power, sharing of resources across the network among many computers and access to the remote and distributed data.

Grid computing provides standard component integration mechanism, active and real-time system management, self healing services, auto provisioning and virtualised environment.

Deterministic techniques are used for power system analysis. These techniques use excess amount of operating cost.

Probabilistic-based analysis, on the other hand, provides comprehensive analysis and is more suitable for a large system. Grid computing can provide an excellent platform for probabilistic-based analysis.

Gird computing has given better performances for PSSS analysis in terms of computing capacity, speed, accuracy and stability.

Grid computing developed for probabilistic transient stability analysis, which can measure the critical clearing time of large system efficiently.

Grid technology offers dependable and consistent access to resources irrespective of their different physical locations, using standard data transfer formats, which can be helpful in designing the future distributed power system control centres.

Grid computing technology has been successfully implemented in areas such as renewable energy resources, monitoring and controlling large numbers of small-scale resources, geographically distributed over large areas etc.

This approach is considered as being efficiently adoptable and expandable in meeting the increasing needs as a result of constant expansion in power systems.

Planning needs analyze large amount of data, which requires simulation and modeling.

Grid computing can help in providing all kinds of information at one place with authorized access and power of fast computation.

Grid computing can also provide an integrated environment for sharing of accurate and reliable information for all the companies and individuals involving in planning.

Grid computing-based framework has been proposed for providing the power system reliability and security analysis of large power system for future expansion planning

Grid computing can help in scheduling the power generation and monitor the status of transmission system. This can also be helpful in preventing congestion in the transmission system.

Grid computing can minimize the difference between the generation and demand load as much as possible by using the load-balancing services.

A grid computing architecture has been designed for reactive power optimization, which is an important measure to improve the voltage profiles.

It can perform real-time load-forecasting and load-balancing operations.

Using of super computers is another solution for providing High Performance Computing but that is an expensive solution.

Parallel processing is also another solution but it requires homogeneous and dedicated computing resources, which again is an expensive solution.

Distributed computing has some advantages over the previous two solutions, but it is difficult to maintain and enhance.

Grid computing has advantages over all these technologies as grid computing is an economical approach.

A lot of research has been done in different areas of power system regarding the applying grid computing technology in different areas.

Power companies need HPC systems and reliable communication systems in order to process their data for operations of their systems.

Integration of all the services on one platform, online reliability and security analysis data, received from the power system through monitoring and control system, can make real benefit for organization.

Grid computing can also provide the services to avoid the congestion problems by working parallel with the transmission system.
