DIGITAL INNOVATION FUND FOR WALES

The aims of the Digital Innovation Fund:

1. Drive the development, adoption and implementation of digital delivery models.

2. Develop and create exemplar digital public service delivery methods.

3. Publicise and share best practice of successful delivery models to allow other public sector bodies in Wales to develop a similar model at lower cost.

SERVICE DESIGN AND OUR INNOVATION PROCESS

@YLabWales

“If you think good design is expensive, you should look at the cost of bad design.”

- Dr Ralf Speth CEO Jaguar

PRINCIPLES OF SERVICE DESIGN

● Understand the problem

● Understand the USER needs - not your needs

● Be smart - what’s already out there?

● Prototype

● Iterate, then iterate again

● Test, test, test.

@YLabWales

OUR PROCESS

Generate as many ideas as possible

Prototype using low quality, quick mock ups

@YLabWales@YLabWales

Fully define the problem

Understand the needs of the user

Work towards a brief to use as an evaluation tool

Test your ideas with the user

Evaluate against your design brief

Iterate and improve based on your user feedback

● Discuss the challenges you each face in your organisations

● Choose one to address as a group in today's workshop

● Use the explore cards 11-14 to think about your organisations

@YLabWales

Explore EXERCISE - CHALLENGES

● Fully define the problem and the users of the service

● What does the user want and need? What does the current solution look like, if any?

● Using the explore cards fill in as much of the worksheet as possible

EXERCISE “People ignore design that ignores people”

@YLabWales

Frank Chimero.

Explore

● Share with your neighbours

● Join forces with another group, talk about the process you’ve just been through and the insights you’ve gained

● Start thinking about what the next steps will be...

THANK YOU FOR ATTENDING!

● Idea generation is a chance to collaborate with your team

● Brainstorm as many ideas as possible

● Use the generate cards as prompts

● Ensure you reflect back on your revised design brief and key points

● Which methods would you use to prototype your ideas?

EXERCISE

@YLabWales

"The way to get good ideas is to get lots of ideas and throw the

bad ones away."

Linus Pauling.

Explore

● Evaluate your designs against the key points from the revised design brief

● Test the solution with the user to gain their feedback

● Use their feedback to iterate and refine the solution

@YLabWales

"We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how

we improve."

Bill Gates, Microsoft.
