Labour shortages & new labour migration to Germany
• Labour shortages in Germany are creating an increasing demand for migrant workers in several industries
• The recruitment, language training and integration support of a migrant worker require considerable investment (financial, material and staff time) from the employers
• A sustainable professional and social integration of migrant workers is a complex process that requires the coordinated efforts of many different actors to be successful
• Current initiatives to recruit migrant workers to Germany report failure rates of up to 20%
• Capturing the experiences and perspective of all involved stakeholders and particularly of migrant workers on the migration and integration process is vital to understanding how to make it more successful for all involved

Integrating migrant workers successfully is a significant challenge for German employers
„I thought it would be easier to learn German. I don‘t like depending on others. I hate it. The first three months I really felt powerless - although I speak English and although many people speak English. (...) At the beginning for example I would only shop in supermarkets so I wouldn‘t need to speak to anybody. (...) In my opinion, the main problem is that the German institutions have not yet really understood how important it is to offer language support right away.“
