National High School Model United Nations Project
Our school (named after a famous archaeologist) is in the centre of Rome,
in a historic building built by the Jesuits in the 16th century, from 1870 used as a state school.
Attended by about 750 students.
Subjects = Italian, Latin and Ancient Greek. The “gymnasium” = History, Geography, Sciences, Maths, English, History
of Art (in English) and P.E., the “lyceum” = Philosophy, and Physics.
The timetable = (gymnasium) from 8 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m., (lyceum) from 8 a.m. till 1 or 2 p.m.

• OBJECTIVE = to increase global awareness among young students looking
at the power of education through simulation
• Main goal = to reach the greatest number of students by cultivating
their passion for global issues problem solving
Model United Nations: characteristics
Simulation of U.N. meetingsStudents are required to- Be ambassadors or diplomats of a country- To deepen their knowledge of and then
discuss international political issues - To use problem solving strategies- To learn how to move in a committee
respecting the rules and procedures laid down by the U.N.
Students are invited to reflect on the value of
• diplomacy
• collaboration• negotiation
take the opportunity of meeting • diplomats of the country represented (Mission Briefing)• Italian diplomats working in the Italian Consulate in N.Y.• Italian committee members working at the U.N.
Requisites and project coursea) Students’ requisites:• Good linguistic knowledge• Strong motivational spiritb) COURSE: a) Delegate Training Course (8 modules/90 hours) in Italy:- History of the U.N., U.N. model, committees and topics, public
speaking- Study of the country represented (geography/economy/politics)
through an Italian simulation (Rome, 13/16 January, 2014)- Position paper (the position of the country represented)- Public speaking (higher level) b) Model United Nations (24 hours) = simulation in New York, in
part at the U.N. Headquarters

ResultsStudents are- considered as ambassadors of different countries
trying to get to a peaceful confrontation,- provided with suitable tools to consider their
surrounding reality,- able to confront other different realities,- given the possibility to express their own
ideas/solutions through: a) interacting in English
b) taking part in international debates with international students/representatives of
other countries
