All 20 ecosystems grew in total number of startups over the last years. The predominant startup ecosystems are still located in North America and Europe, occupying 16 of the top 20. Ten North American ecosystems are now in the top 20, versus seven in 2012. Six European ecosystems made it into the top 20, one more than in 2012, with Amsterdam emerging as a strong newcomer. Silicon Valley continues to dominate. The Bay Area, which is practically synonymous with high growth technology startups, has again achieved top rankings in Performance, Funding, and Talent making for an overall ranking of #1. The only component where it is not ranked #1 is Market Reach, where it is #4.

Die relative Entwicklung der Grndungsaktivitten in Deutschland 2004 = 100
Das quantitative Niveau aller Grndungsaktivitten in Deutschland hat sich seit 2004 um mehr als 30% gesenkt. Ein Grund hierfr ist die geringere Zahl an Grndungen aus der Arbeitslosigkeit aufgrund der anhaltenden guten Wirtschaftslage in Deutschland . Auch die vernderten Frderstrukturen fr Grndungen aus der Arbeitslosigkeit haben zum Rckgang der Grndungsaktivitten beigetragen.

Die Stadtstaaten Berlin und Hamburg weisen im Bundeslndervergleich die hchsten Grndungsintensitten auf. Die Ostdeutschen Flchenlnder weisen sowohl hinsichtlich der quantitativen Grndungsaktivitten als auch bei den Grndungsintensitten besonders niedrige Werte auf. In Westdeutschland belegt das Saarland den letzten Platz. Mit 65 bis 90 Grndungen je 10.000 Erwerbsfhigen weisen Bayern , Hessen, Nordrhein -Westfalen und Schleswig -Holstein leicht berdurchschnittliche Grndungsintensitten auf.

Die Stadtstaaten Berlin und Hamburg weisen traditionell die hchsten Grnderquoten auf. Bremen hat hier in den letzten Jahren an Boden verloren. Unter den Westdeutschen Bundeslndern sind die Grnderquoten in Hessen und Rheinland -Pfalz am hchsten. Die Nebenerwerbsgrndungen spielen hier eine wichtige Rolle. Ostdeutsche Bundeslnder schneiden insgesamt unterdurchschnittlich ab.
