Welcome!Welcome to the 42nd Annual Los Angeles City/County Conference on Gifted/Talented Education at the beautiful Skirball Cultural Center. Each year, our Conference Committee strives to select a theme and speakers that reflect the “hot topic” trends in gifted education, child development, and society.

Our goal each year is to curate a group of high-quality speakers to share a depth of knowledge and current educational innovations in gifted education related to our theme. This year’s theme is Head, Heart and Hands: Educating the Whole Gifted Learner. This theme supports the concept that educating the head (cognitive domain), exclusive of heart (affective domain) and hand (psychomotor domain), is no longer educational best practice. Our hope is that this conference serves as a powerful reminder that gifted learners have complex needs that expand beyond supporting intellectual growth and devel-opment. A differentiated curriculum that supports a multi-disciplinary teaching approach that addresses intellectual, social-emotional, and kinesthetic needs is critical for the health and development of our gifted learners. This conference aims to explore how we as educators can feed the minds, bodies, and hearts of gifted learners every day and provide a balanced educational program that recognizes and validates the whole child. It is the education of all three domains in tandem that will genuinely prepare gifted students for success in the demanding 21st Century. Head provides engagement, heart enablement, and hands enactment (Sipos, Battisti, & Grimm, 2006). As you attend sessions today, look for exciting intersections of head, heart, and hands and transferability to working with gifted and talented learners. Three icons will be used to indicate the primary focus (or combination of foci) for each workshop. Use these icons to guide your session choices. Please note that popular topics and speakers for general audiences have been placed in the three largest venues – Guerin Pavilion (Herscher Hall), Ahmanson Hall, and Magnin Audito-rium. We are also excited to introduce many new speakers to the conference this year, including some familiar names! Among these esteemed presenters, we are pleased to welcome Lisa Van Gemert (known for her insightful “Gifted Guru” website and guest commentator on the popular television show Child Genius) and Ian Byrd (most GATE teachers have turned to his “Byrdseed” website more than a time or two). With the incredible lineup of hand-selected speakers, we know that whichever sessions you attend, you will each leave today with new learning that can be imple-mented in your school or home. On behalf of our community of gifted learners and educators, we thank you for your dedication. Enjoy the day!

The Los Angeles City/County Conference on Gifted/Talented Education is designed to provide an opportunity for educators and parents of gifted learn-ers to discuss specialized topics and issues of vital importance to the develop-ment of quality educational programs for gifted students in Southern Califor-nia schools, including the differentiated implementation of the California Standards. This Conference addresses the diversity that exists among our gifted learners and provides information to support the academic and social-emotional growth of these students. There will be an array of sessions for teachers, administrators, parents, and community members designed to meet the new realities of the 21st Century GATE student.

Sincere Thanks to the Conference Committee: LaRoyce Bell, Executive Director, Greater Los Angeles Gifted Children’s Association; Cathy Estrada, Dr. Lucy Hunt, Dr. Gloria Mahoney, Dr. Nicole Niederdeppe, Wynne Wong-Cheng, and Erin Yoshida-Ehrmann, District Coordinators, Gifted/Talented Programs, Los Angeles Unified School District; Shawn Ward, Pearson Publishing; Darrel De Vera, Skirball Cultural Center; Matthew Ehrmann and Patti Yoshihara, Conference Contributors.

A pediatrician, researcher, activist and author, Dr. Dimitri Christakis’ passion is developing actionable strategies to optimize the cognitive, emotional and social development of children. The pursuit of that passion has taken him from the exam room, to the community and, most recently, to the research lab as he studies the effects of early environmental influences on child health and development. Christakis is a professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington, Director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Devel-opment at Seattle Children’s Research Institute and an attending pediatrician at Seattle Children’s Hospital. He is

the author of more than 150 original research articles, a textbook of pediatrics, and the book The Elephant in the Living Room: Make Television Work For Your Kids. A frequent speaker to international audiences of pediatricians, parents and educators about the impact of early learning on brain development, Christakis’ work has been featured on ABC, NBC, CBS and NPR, as well as major newspapers both nationally and internation-ally. Dr. Christakis’ TEDx Rainier talk, Media and Children, is a must-see for all parents and educators.

In our ever-changing digital world, we need to “hit pause” and reflect on the effects of media use on our children. This eye-opening presentation will cover the perils and pitfalls of media use from early childhood through adolescence. Equally important, it will emphasize ways to ensure that media is a positive force in children's lives including applica-tions to teaching and instructional practices. This powerful presentation will change the way you think about technology, media, and screen time.

Session One 9:10 - 10:10 a.m.

Herscher Hall, Room 202Integrating the Arts into Your Classroom with Depth and ComplexityIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators, & Coordinators (K-5)The arts help develop many 21st century skills and outcomes including curiosity, imagi-nation, creativity, and evaluation skills. Arts education does more than just give students a creative outlet; it can actually help connect them to a larger world. In this session we will discuss how the arts can be integrated into your classroom to engage and extend the learning of gifted students. The use of depth and complexity will be demonstrated as well. Participants will partake in an integrated activity they can use with their students.

Christina Desiderio, Principal, R.L. Stevenson Elementary School, Burbank USD

Herscher Hall, Room 301Nurturing a Growth Mindset in Gifted and High-Ability LearnersIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Coordinators & Parents (6-12)Research shows that a growth mindset, the belief that intelligence and abilities are qualities that one can develop, has powerful ramifications on student motivation and learning, and school success. This workshop, based on the research of Dr. Carol Dweck, will focus on understanding mindset as well as identify actions and strategies to help nurture a growth mindset in gifted and high-ability learners.

Guadalupe Arellano, Michael Lovelady & Gloria Martinez, Ed.D, District Coordinators, Advanced Learning Options, Los Angeles USD

Herscher Hall, Room 302Fostering the Most Effective Learning MindsetIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators & Coordinators (K-12)When learners understand that their brain is like a muscle that gets stronger with practice, even our most risk-averse students will work harder, especially in the face of a challenge. Therefore, understanding the amazing plasticity of the brain is the core of the classroom culture upon which grit, resilience and intrinsic motivation to learn is built.

13

Session One 9:10 - 10:10 a.m.

Herscher Hall, Room 303/304Adding Complexity and Depth to Teaching for CreativityIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators & Coordinators (K-12)Distinguished as one of the essential skills for the 21st century, educators of the gifted have long committed themselves to the skills of divergent thinking. However, it is time to go beyond skills into tactics that strengthen the core of creativity. This session focuses on pedagogy that encourages students to experiment, to innovate, and to explore new avenues. Such pedagogy takes students deeper into complex tasks that support rather than trivialize creativity. In addition, attention will be given to the role of collaboration, diversity, idea exchange and an ability to build on another’s achievements in the creative process.

Diane Heacox, Ed.D, Educational Consultant & ProfessorEmeritus, St. Catherine University

Herscher Hall, Room 305Understanding Acceleration: Implementing Research-BasedPractices for GATEIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Coordinators & Parents (K-8)Gifted students have great potential, but human potential often goes unrealized without effective talent development strategies. One strategy is acceleration, which consistently yields positive impacts on academic aspirations and achievement. This session describes 20 research-based types of acceleration which can be used to differen-tiate and individualize learning for students. In addition, attendees will understand the impacts of acceleration on students’ social-emotional, academic, and career outcomes. Using nationally representative, longitudinal datasets, Dr. McClarty’s research suggests accelerated students can keep up with their older peers. They achieve higher grades, obtain more prestigious jobs, earn higher salaries, and are equally satisfied with their careers. Early acceleration may propel students along a more appropriately-speeded path and ultimately enable them to achieve ambitious goals. Finally, attendees will learn how to address common objections and misconceptions about acceleration and what additional resources exist to better advocate for gifted learners.

Session One 9:10 - 10:10 a.m.

Haas Conference Center, Room 173Connecting Thinking and Language for Gifted StudentsIntended Audience: Teachers & Coordinators (K-8)This session will show participants the relationship between academic language and rigorous thinking. Beginning with a clear understanding of academic language, partici-pants will be taught to expand students’ expressive and receptive language to align with the complexities of thinking involved in gifted education. A close look at the role of language in traditional gifted practices will be shared through instructional tools and a language planning process. As we continue to elevate the thinking across the curriculum we increase the language demands on students to share their thinking. Teachers will walk away with an understanding of how to clearly connect thinking and language.

Taper Courtyard, Classroom 160Learning with Apple: Reaching Every Student’s Learning StyleIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Coordinators & Parents (K-12)We know that the best learning happens when it’s personal for every student. When students learn with Apple, learning becomes relevant to the world they live in, inspires creativity, encourages collaboration, and challenges them to solve problems with their own unique talents. For over 30 years, Apple has designed technology and services for this reason— so every teacher can reach every student’s learning style.

Session Two 10:20 - 11:20 a.m.

Herscher Hall, Room 202Finding Flow at the Crossroads of Head, Heart, and HandsIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Coordinators & Parents (K-12)This interactive workshop explores the nexus of cognitive and socio-emotional factors in learning environments that inspire Flow: creativity, engagement, persistence and complete immersion in an experience. In so doing, Finding Flow offers a focus on unique proven strategies that attend to the unique needs of diverse gifted and talented (dual-/twice-exceptional; English learners; historically underrepresented populations; and low socioeconomic status students) for educators and parents emerging from a year-long action research project undertaken by teachers in an urban school district. Resources and references for administrators, teachers and parents will be provided, including lesson plans and assessment tools.

Morgan Appel, Ph.D, Director, Education Department, Extended Studies and Public Programs, University of California, San Diego

Herscher Hall, Room 302Building Community and Managing Stress in the ClassroomIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators & Coordinators (K-12)Humans are wired to be social and have neuron networks to promote empathy, under-standing and peer-to-peer learning. When these networks are engaged at school, strong, connected and collaborative classrooms are built. An understanding of the basic brain networks underlying our sociality as well as the biology and psychology of the stress response will lay the foundation for adaptED to provide a number of research based strategies and activities for building a happier, more attentive and less-stressed classroom.

Session Two 10:20 - 11:20 a.m.

Herscher Hall, Room 303/304Motivating the Gifted but Reluctant LearnerIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators & Coordinators (K-12)Not all gifted learners are productive students. Not all are “A” students. Some perform exceedingly well in a single curriculum area but appear to be average in others. Some gifted students establish a perplexing pattern of doing well or doing nothing. Some are reluctant, even resistant, learners refusing to play the school game. This session explores well documented research on underlying causes of low performance and creates distinctions between non-producers, selective producers and underachievers amongst the gifted populations. Participants are guided through a process for diagnos-ing specific performance issues.

Diane Heacox, Ed.D, Educational Consultant & ProfessorEmeritus, St. Catherine University

Herscher Hall, Room 305Learning From International Gifted Practices: How Views ofGiftedness Influence Teacher Behavior and Student Performance Intended Audience: Teachers, Administrators & Coordinators (K-12)Research consistently shows countries that excel on educational indicators are commit-ted to quality teachers, school autonomy, and data-based decisions. But we know comparatively little about how these countries educate their gifted learners. This session reviews gifted education practices around the world and links those practices with teachers’ behaviors and students’ educational outcomes. Attendees will learn about three paradigms in gifted education – gifted child, talent development, and differ-entiation – and how those paradigms are associated with gifted definitions, identifica-tion procedures, and educational practices. Further, attendees will learn how country-level gifted policies and paradigms are related to educators’ use of teacher-directed instruction, student orientation, and formative assessment, and how these teacher behaviors are ultimately connected to student performance. This session will illustrate why different paradigms might be associated with different instructional behaviors and how views, policies, and gifted education practices can affect the achievement of all learners, not just the gifted.

Session Two 10:20 - 11:20 a.m.

Haas Conference Center, Room 173Connecting Head, Heart and Hands: Schools, Classrooms, andFamilies as EcosystemsIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Coordinators, Psychologists & Parents (K-12)Schools are places that are teeming with life – dynamic and ever changing. They are places where living organisms in the form of students, faculty and staff members, administrators, parents, and others flow in and out of physical environments – school grounds, classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, athletic facilities, etc. The flow of ideas, knowledge, communication, social interactions, relationships, and emotions as well as the ever-increasing use of technology are integral parts of these systems, making them increasingly complex places where everything is somehow connected to every-thing else. Yet, in many ways, we continue to view schools as they have been viewed since industrialization – as factories. This mechanistic and compartmentalized model is out of step with current reality and can be quite limiting. This session will explore how using this different paradigm can help transform our schools into the places that we as educators know they could be and should be.

Taper Courtyard, Classroom 161Reinventing STEM Academic Excellence for All StudentsIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators & Coordinators (K-12)As the 2011 LAUSD Teacher of the Year and current Principal of the Science Academy STEM Magnet, Carlos Lauchu, a collaborative partner of the College Board, will define what a STEM program should include and prioritize. He and his colleague, Jodi Huff, will share educational strategies and instructional techniques that promote student engagement and intrapersonal empowerment for all learners – which have yielded impressive results. For eight years, 100% of Mr. Lauchu’s students scored “Advanced” on the California Standardized Test in Science. Even more incredible, his middle school students have achieved an unprecedented passing rate on Science AP and SAT exams. In this session, Mr. Lauchu and Ms. Huff will share an inside look into their classrooms and the Science Academy's articulated STEM program, as they discuss their school’s extraor-dinary journey and the potential for replicating their innovative techniques.

Taper Courtyard, Classroom 162Making African American and Latino Students’ Lives Really Matter in GATE and Other ClassroomsIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Coordinators, Psychologists & Parents (K-12)Despite decades of school reforms, African American and Latino K-12 students continue to be overrepresented among the students who have negative schooling experiences, while being underrepresented in college-preparatory programs, such as GATE. This session will provide participants with stories, research, and practical strategies that will encourage them to use their heads, hearts, and hands to empower African American and Latino students.

Taper Courtyard, Classroom 163Organizing an Afterschool Robotics ClubIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators & Coordinators (1-6)Last year, thousands of teams competed in the Wonder League Robotics Competition, where they learned about teamwork, problem solving, and creativity. We talk about how teachers and parents can organize a Wonder League Robotics Club so their students can hone their coding skills and compete in the worldwide computer science and robotics competition, the first of its kind for kids as young as first grade. This is an excellent precursor to programs like FIRST and VEX Robotics competitions in secondary schools.

Taper Courtyard, Resource RoomCapitalizing on Intuition and InquiryIntended Audience: Teachers (K-8)Gifted kids are curious, intuitive learners, yet we often battle these characteristics in the classroom. Students understand quickly and get bored, ask questions that are beyond the lesson, or grow to resent repetitive practice. Let's take advantage of these traits rather than working against them by incorporating intuition and inquiry into our lesson design.

Herscher Hall, Guerin PavilionRedrawing the Lines: Neurodiversity – A Compass to a Changing WorldIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Coordinators, Psychologists & Parents (K-12)Renowned writer, neurodiversity activist and author Jonathan Mooney vividly, humor-ously and passionately brings to life the wonderful world of neurodiversity: the research behind it, the people who live in it, and the lessons it has for all of us who care about the future of education. Explaining the latest theories, Jonathan helps teachers and parents redefine what it is for students in the 21st century to think and to learn and to be successful. He provides concrete examples of how to prepare students and implement frameworks that best support their academic and professional pursuits.

Jonathan Mooney, Author, Activist & SpeakerBook signing for this author will be held during Session Two in the exhibitor area (Greater Los Angeles Gifted Children’s Association table).

Ahmanson HallBeing Bright is Not Enough: Social and Emotional Needs of Gifted ChildrenIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Coordinators, Psychologists & Parents (K-12)A widespread myth about gifted children is that, because they are bright, they can simply "make it on their own." However, the characteristics of gifted children-combined with current educational practices—often put them "at risk," and the social, emotional, and interpersonal needs of gifted/talented children can result in significant problems if these children are not understood and nurtured. This session highlights several types of gifted children and behaviors, along with behavior patterns and cultural factors, which can result in gifted children being overlooked and even mislabeled. Other gifted children are never identified because they are learning disabled or because of their disadvantaged background. This session describes how characteristics of gifted children relate to their social/emotional needs, interpersonal and emotional styles, and frequent difficulties, such as peer difficulties, underachievement, perfectionism, or depression.

Magnin AuditoriumLearning with Apple: Reaching Every Student’s Learning StyleIntended Audience: Teachers, Administrators, Coordinators & Parents (K-12)We know that the best learning happens when it’s personal for every student. When students learn with Apple, learning becomes relevant to the world they live in, inspires creativity, encourages collaboration, and challenges them to solve problems with their own unique talents. For over 30 years, Apple has designed technology and services for this reason— so every teacher can reach every student’s learning style.
