PRESCOTT COLLEGENewsletter Term 3, Week 2, Friday 3 August, 2018

From the Principal’s Desk...Leadership, in our post-modern world, has moved away from the Christian “servant leadership” model, where principle and the people who are being led, are most important. In the recent past, most western leaders were diplomatic and thoughtful in their responses. They inspired others with ideas on how they might make things better for all and challenged bad behaviour when exhibited. As I survey the current western world leaders, I see that reactionary self-serving leadership is on the rise. I see men and women who are prepared to disregard principle or bully others, with their only objective being to seize power at all costs. They jostle for position, discarding their integrity for the potential prize of winning more votes.

The biblical model calls for responsible and caring leaders. Moses is possibly the greatest example of leadership found in the Bible. God gave Moses the following advice in the book of Exodus, chapter 18, verse 21: “...look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe…” Those possessing these qualities will be leaders of God’s people.

Prescott College has a leadership development program that is based on the biblical model. It begins at Year 8 with the Student Representative Council membership and progresses systematically through to Year 12, with College Captains and Student Leaders.

From the Principal’s Desk cont’dThis week we have begun the process of electing the College Captains and Student Leaders for 2019. These students will represent both peers and staff in many and varied sporting, cultural, spiritual, academic and marketing events throughout the year. The Student Leadership nomination process allows students and teachers to identify potential candidates from the current Year 11 cohort. Self-nomination is also possible. Once nominations close, the election process involves formal interviews with the College Administration and culminates in a school wide voting event. The Student Leadership nomination process was presented to the whole school on Tuesday morning during assembly. Pastor Braden had earlier presented it to the Year 11 class in greater detail, as they are the class, who are eligible for nomination.

Prescott College works to develop student leadership skills by supporting our students to become outstanding leaders. We do so because genuine Christian leadership is a great need in our world. The book, Education, by E G White, on which the Seventh day Adventist education system was founded, states: “The greatest want of the world is the want of men and women, who will not be bought or sold; men and women who in their inmost souls are true and honest; men and women who do not fear to call sin by its right name; men and women whose conscience is as true to duty as the needle to the pole; men and women who will stand for the right though the heavens fall.”

I would like to encourage all students to think carefully, and remain prayerful, in theirdecision-making processes regarding student leadership at the College.

Mr Peter Charleson, Principal

Students from Prescott College Creative Arts team have been earnestly rehearsing in preparation for Prescott College’s Showcase of the Arts, coming up very soon on Tuesday, August 7.

Students from Year 9, 10 and 11 Drama classes and the Prescott College Choir will be performing items across various genres, that address numerous themes, not the least of which is the idea of family.

Students have embarked into new territory this year with their undertaking of Annie JR: The Musical, an abridged version of the classic story of a young orphaned girl on a quest to find her family.

The action kicks off at 6:30pm at Golden Grove Recreation and Arts Centre. Come along to Prescott College’s Showcase of the Arts, to support our students and for a fantastic night of entertainment.

Showcase of the Arts

Jennifer Huckle - Spoken wordSpoken word has grown increasingly popular over the course of the last ten years as a medium to express oneself. Jennifer Huckle, a Year 10 student will be performing a piece by Digital poet entitled ‘War’ which speaks to the breakdown of family and the effect this is having on our society.

Year 9 Play – All in the FamilyThis play, written by Mathew Brown and Ken McBeath is an ensemble play of 5 short unrelated scenes which highlight different types of families and showcase both the

comical and serious side of family life. This play asks the question: What does Family mean to me?

Year 10 Musical – AnnieThe classic musical about an orphan in a facility run by the mean Miss Hannigan, Annie believes that her parents left her there by mistake. When a rich man named Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks decides to let an orphan live at his home to promote his image, Annie is selected. While Annie becomes accustomed to living in Warbucks’ mansion, she still longs to meet her parents. Consequently, she begins a search for them with a reward attached, bringing out many fraudulent claims.

Year 11 Monologues – Women of CourageThis year’s class researched three women in the Bible who were a part of Jesus’ lineage- Rahab, Ruth and Bathsheba. They then wrote their own monologues based on the struggles and triumphs these women faced. Each woman’s monologue is interwoven as a way to show continuity between the generations and how they all shared the link of being related to Jesus.

Year 12 Food & Hospitality Techniques

On Wednesday 1st August the Year 12 Food and Hospitality classes joined together at the College to explore and practice with different kitchen equipment pooled together from both schools and cooking methods.

The students collaborated in mixed groups to make wontons (steaming), cupcakes (baking and piping), fresh pasta, roasting chickpeas and we made aaquafaba meringue from the water left over from the chickpeas.

Each group were able to socialise and learn from each other.

Grunts. It’s the universal language of teenagers. How was your day? Grunt.Learn anything new today? Grunt. What do you want for dinner? Grunt.

But they’re not the only questions whose answers seem elusive.Where did I come from? What’s my purpose? Where am I going? How long since you thought about this line of enquiry? These Big Questions often seem too big or too hard to answer, and so they remain in the too hard basket. Our response to them, even as adults, amounts to little more than grunts.

But it’s important that we take the time to really think them through. In 1 Peter 3:15, the Bible writer encourages everyone to be prepared to give an answer when they are asked about their beliefs. How prepared are you? This thought is the driving force behind our Chapel theme for Term 3 – Big Questions.

For the parents reading this, don’t stop asking the questions even if all you receive are grunts. Your investment in conversation is a clear indication that you care. And for the teenagers still tuned in, take a moment to consider your response to the questions you field each day and maybe even try verbalising them in a coherent fashion!More importantly, let us all take the time to consider the Big Questions and be prepared to give a response.

Prescott Primary Northern Year 6 students visit PCThe Year 6s from PPN will be joining us every Monday to experience College education and facilities. They are split into groups and will be experiencing Science, Maths and Design & Tech subjects for the whole of Term 3. It’s lovely to see their smiling faces and the joy they get from this new experience. We hope that they take away with them new confidence, feel at ease about the transition to secondary

school, and are excited about what the future will hold.

University Open Days are coming up. I have received information from Adelaide University and the University of South Australia that their Open Days will be on 12 August at their city campus. Flinders University will have their Open Day on 10 and 11 August. Information booklets have already been made available to Year 12

students and there is more information to follow.

Also, Year 12 students will be guided through the process of applying to universities and TAFE online. Information

regarding courses that are available will be provided to all Year 12 students and others who may want to enquire.

I will discuss the process with all Year 12s and talk to each student individually regarding career and course

options.

You will be interested to learn that for the first time this year, SATAC will make first-round offers on

20 December. Previously, first-round offers were not made until January. Some courses

are exempt from this process. They are primarily health-related courses. I have

a full list of degrees that are exempt if students or parents wish to enquire.

If you have any questions related to the application process, please

be in contact with me at [email protected] or

call me through the College Administration Office.

Successful students talk about what they’re learning. Successful students get to know something well enough that they can put it into words.Talking about something, with friends or classmates, is not only good for checking whether or not you know something, it’s a proven learning tool. Transferring ideas into words provides the most direct path for moving knowledge from short-term to long-term memory. You really don’t “know” material until you can put it into words. So, next time you study, don’t do it silently. Talk about notes, problems, readings, with friends, recite to a chair, organise a study group, pretend you’re teaching your peers. “Talk-learning” produces a whole host of memory traces

that result in more learning.

Bon Voyage Ms PrnichMs Prnich has made the decision to head back to Perth, to be closer to her family, at the end of this year. Over the past few years, she has really made an impact on the Prescott community in her role as Deputy Principal. We admire her tenacity and the discipline methods she uses with the students, always communicating with them in a clear and equitable manner. She will be sorely missed, but we wish her all the best as she starts a new adventure back in her home town.
