Financial Literacy Initiative

The money is out there - - do students know how to find it?

The Region One ESC Center for Excellence in College and Career Readiness partners with busi-

nesses, higher education and community organizations to provide direct financial literacy and finan-

cial aid knowledge to hundreds of students and their families. With the cost of a higher education

skyrocketing and financial aid not always enough to fill the gap, students have to find ways to meet

that disparity.

Research from the Corporation for Enterprise Development indicates that low-income students’ un-

met needs are anywhere between $5,000 and $7,000 annually. Sadly, when faced with the burden

of having to find ways to cover these costs, many students do not enroll in college or even finish

college.

Equipped with this data, Region One ESC structures services for students and their parents in an

effort to increase their financial literacy awareness through fun and engaging activities.

“Research indicates that a student with a college savings account is four times more likely to go to

college, and six times more likely if the account is under their name.”
