Lots of things can puzzle a reader For example authors may not explain everything Some things you have to think about

On the front of this card are several examples of this The author lists some of Benjamin Franklins sayings She has told you that the sayings express common sense You know the phrase wise sayings Then you read the fiJst saying Hunger never saw bad bread Huh What does it mean How can hunger see What is bad bread

The smart reader stops here and thinks about what this might mean Maybe you already know something about figurative language It is a color~ul use of words The words mean something more than each words usual meaning Maybe here hunger is meant to stand for any hungry person Maybe bad bIead means food that is not very tasty You think about times when you have been really hungry Yo) can figure out that this saying means When you are hungry you arent very picky Then you read the next saying Eat to live and not live to eat You can figure om that eat to live means people have to have food in order to stay alive But maybe you have no idea what live to eat means Then it is time to raise your hand and ask a question

Writing Extension Authors must think about their readers The main purposes for writing are to entertain and to give information Some other reasons for writing might be to persuade people or just to share your own feelings about something Write one or two sayings like Poor Richards Keep a purpose in mind for each saying Write entertain inform persuade or egtpress after each one

Colonial America The American Revolution

A fu ndamental difference of opinion had developed between British authorities and the Americans on

the re lated issues of taxing the colonists and their representation in Parliament

On the surface the Americans he ld to the view of actual representation meaning that in order to be

taxed by Parliament the Americans rightly should have actual legislators seated and voting in London

Ja mes Otis argued fo r t his form of representation in the Stamp Act Congress in 1765 but few other

delegates supported him

The Brit ish on the other hand supported the concept of virtual representation which was based on the

belief that a M ember of Parliament virtually represented every person in the empire and there was no

need for a specific representative from Virginia or M assachusetts for example Soame Jenyns a

member of Pa rlia ment displayed the contempt felt by many in that body towards the American

arguments w hen he wrote As these are usually mixed up with several patriotic and favorite words

such as liberty property Englishmen etc wh ich are apt to make strong impressions on that more

numero us part of mankind who have ears but no understanding it will not I think be improper to give

them some answers

In fact virtual representation was not unknown in America Legislators in the Virginia House of

Burgesses could live in one district while representing another one It could also be argued that

property-owning adult males in much of colonial America virtually represented non-voting women

slaves and men without property

Yet t he differentiation between actual and virtual representation was really a convenient fiction from

the American side Most colonists realized the total impracticability of sending representatives across

the Atlantic London was too far away too much time would be needed to issue instructions to colonial

represe ntat ives and any American representation would be so badly outnumbered as to make it totally

ineffectual

If taxes were necessary then the Americans wanted their own assemblies to impose them Further the

colonists wanted Parliamentary recognition of this perceived right Essentially 110 taxation without

represent ation really meant No ta xation by Parliament No representation in Parliament Let us run

our own affairs

During Reading

1 What are some of the things that made Benjamin Franklin famous

2 Have you heard any of the sayings from Poor Richards Almanack before Which ones

3 Why do you suppose Benjamin Franklin wrote the Poor Richard sayings

After Reading

2 Why do you think the ayings in Poor Richards All7lanack were a popular

3 Put some of tb aying in your own word I it difficull to u e as few words a he did Why

Skill Focus Puzzle It Out
