Create a Colorful Patio with

It is common to find roses in the large yards and gardens

of homes around the “City of Roses”, but what about using our beloved roses to brighten up your patios and other smaller spaces for a change...in containers! Planting roses that tend to be more compact or grow vertically work great in containers to help brighten up and add a welcoming fragrance to your home’s entryway.

Here at Al’s, we think the best time to buy roses is in the late winter or early spring, when we have a wonderful selection of roses to choose from. If you are interested in varieties that look beautiful and will grow well in containers for up to three years, here are our recommendations.

Dreaming of YourPERFECT PATIO

Take a deep breath and imagine what it would be like to have your ideal outdoor area, and then consider how you can make that dream come true. Early spring is a great

time to focus on creating a yard that has both form and function while not loosing sight of design and color. Consider the look, the elements, the colors - and then edit!

The LOOKWhat if you had multiple areas? A deck outside your bedroom, or a deck off your dining area? Maybe even consider an area pushed farther away from the house, in a more secluded setting? Each of these areas can be enhanced to create a special experience and is well worth the effort. Small spaces have vast potential, and with a little forethought, you will be able to fit more than you imagine - with enhanced functionality!

The ELEMENTSConsider the elements that attract you. Your style is reflected in every aspect of your life. So whether it is traditional, transitional, or that modern eclectic edgy look, take the time to consider your personal style. The use of new and mixed materials are bringing some unique twists in design that will help you define your look.

The COLORSThe art of color can be challenging yet rewarding. Whether your space is small or grand, consider how you feel when you look at certain colors. Do you want bright energizing colors, or muted relaxing hues? From bright playful shades to cheer up your spaces, to deep, soothing tones that evoke the calming feel of nature, color has a big impact on the overall feel of your outdoor space. Big Solutions forSmall Space Gardening

Gardens are as unique as the gardeners that plant and care for them. Some gardeners have the luxury of planting on acres of land, while others are challenged by maximizing the impact of a “postage stamp”

plot. For those of us in the latter group, there are some great ways to enjoy all the benefits of gardening, even in smaller yards, patios, decks, or balconies. By selecting the right plants for containers, and the perfect outdoor accompaniments, you can enjoy your small outdoor space all year long!

To really make a visual impact in a small space, try grouping together multiple containers and filling them with plants that have similar care needs. Choose a beautiful statement container, but make sure to add other containers of different sizes and shapes to keep it interesting. This will actually make your space look bigger! Cluster the containers and choose a plant color that is consistently repeated in each container to achieve the cohesiveness you are looking for.

Nothing looks worse than one big container with just 1 or 2 plants in it, so choose a focal plant, such as the ‘Magnoliaeflora’ Camellia, that is evergreen and will look good all year round. Make sure to pack ’em full to give you the most impact. The other mistake that can be made is to use lots of little containers, which ironically only serves to make your space look smaller!

When you are really challenged by a limited footprint, always go vertical. Try using existing elements such as fences to encourage the use of all overhead space. If you are lucky enough to have arches or trellises, us them for hanging baskets, making sure to invest in good iron to support the weight of a recently watered plant.

New Ideas for Houseplants in Your Home

Spring is just a few weeks away and there are signs of the landscape showing off their

late winter blooms. While we all enjoy these in our gardens, we still need that greenery fix for all the time we spend inside our home. If you are craving the spark of green foliage or a color pop of a bloom, tropical plants are the answer! Research has shown that even 1 indoor plant helps to lighten our moods and clean the air. If that is true, just think of what 4 or 5 plants in one grouping could do for your indoor environment. Plus, a grouping of plants - with similar light needs - make a pleasing visual arrangement in any room.

In a space of a few feet away from a window, The cascading leaves of Spider Plants or Pothos contrast well with the deep green foliage of Peace Lilies or ZZ Plants.

The routine of caring for these plants will become a pleasant activity each week, and the stress of the day will melt away as you water and interact with your plants. That’s why at Al’s, we bring in a large assortment of plants with unique characteristics for the many spaces available in your home.

It’s Time for Gardening, Naturally

Us gardeners love the thought of being outdoor and growing wonderful flowers

and delicious edibles. Over the past few years, however, we have seen challenges to the health of our gardens and crops. Bee populations are in decline around the world and we have endured more summer heat and less seasonal rainfall.

But there are steps we can take to help nourish the bee and other beneficial insect populations and help our gardens withstand the heat and drought. It just takes being mindful of natural gardening practices when planning your garden. With a few simple steps, you can create a well-balanced garden with healthy soil, pollinated flowers, plentiful edibles. Even feeding hummingbirds and other neighborhood birds can entice them in joining beneficial bugs to snack on the “bad bugs” that can plague your garden. And the more bees and beneficial insects roaming around our gardens, the more well-balanced our gardens will be!

TIPS for a Natural Garden

Provide your garden with many different types of plants and flowers. This diversity creates an environment for all kinds of different pollinators.

Feed the soil. Add compost when planting new plants, and top dress your garden beds with organic material. That organic material is alive with beneficial microbes, and

helps create good drainage. The top dressing also helps to keep the soil cool and moist in the heat of the summer.

Group plants together with like-cultural needs so that thirsty plants can get the water they need, while not over-watering the others.

Release Mason Bees and add a Mason Bee House to your garden area. These bees look similar to the common housefly and begin pollinating flowers when the weather is a few degrees too cool for the honey bees.

Release ladybugs to feast on aphids and other unwanted bugs in your garden.

Add a bird bath for the birds and other creatures that enjoy a good water source.

Plant Northwest native plants to attract our native pollinators. These plants are also adapted to the winter rainfall and summer

droughts of our region.

When you can, use less toxic solutions to pest removal. Natural products or even a simple

stream of water can combat these bad bugs.
