Visitation Little Samaritans Program

The Little Samaritans program accepts children walking

to five years of age during the 8:15 and 10:00 A.M. Masses.

The class includes a religious story from the Bible, a craft

relating to the story of the day and, of course, playtime.

There is no need to pre-register and you can bring your

children to the classes as little or as often as you like.

Little Sams will not meet on Sunday, December 6.

Sessions are held in the Parish Center. If you have any

questions, please call Donna Monaghan at 630-834-5383.

First Sunday of Advent

Reflection

Tough economic times weigh on everyone. While some

people seem to be able to afford everything, go every-

where, and enjoy what they want, there are so many people

that have come to a point in their lives where every penny

is pinched and every purchase scrutinized. Data released

by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that consumers are

spending less on big-ticket items to afford basics. House-

holds hit by layoffs, the tight job market, and heavy debt

burdens are holding back on spending. The savings rate

has dropped, indicating that consumers are using up scant

resources to stay afloat. Even people who might be able to

spend a little more are being cautious, because the eco-

nomic mood is so gloomy. The words of Jesus in today’s

Gospel could well characterize the overall global experi-

ence, “on earth nations will be in dismay.”

It might seem a bit odd that we begin Advent, which is a

season of hope, with a rather dismal and disturbing Gospel.

The end of time is not something that we usually think

about to any great extent. We are often more concerned

with the anxieties of daily life, as the Gospel puts it. Those

daily worries seem like enough for most of us. We don’t

need to add the end of the world on top of it.

But for many people today, in this economic environment,

daily anxieties can seem like the end of the world. Bills

mount up, tensions grow, jobs or homes are lost. We need

this season of hope to renew our own longings and expec-

tations. The prophet Isaiah reminds us that God fulfills his

promises. God’s mercy endures in every generation, in-

cluding ours. The actions we take to assist others become

an expression of God's mercy and a sign of God’s renew-

ing hope. In the weeks to come even a small kindness to

someone could help to ease anxiety, and help that person

believe that redemption is at hand.

VISITATION, ELMHURST, IL NOVEMBER 29, 2015

Celebrating Advent 2015

Daily Mass—The Scripture readings and prayers at the daily Advent Masses capture well the spirit of preparation and

expectation which are the hallmarks of this season. Masses are celebrated Monday through Friday at 6:15 A.M. and 8:15 A.M

and on Saturday at 8:15 A.M. If you can’t attend daily Mass, try following the Scripture readings at home. The readings for

daily Mass are listed in the bulletin each week.

Sacrament of Confession—Through this sacrament, we can “straighten the crooked paths” that we have taken in our

lives and make ready the way of the Lord. Confessions are heard from 4:00–4:45 p.m. on Saturdays. There will be a Com-

munal Penance Service on Monday, December 14, at 7:00 P.M. at Mary, Queen of Heaven Parish 426 N. West Ave-

nue, Elmhurst.

Eucharistic Adoration—The Adoration Chapel is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for quiet prayer and meditation. If

you would like to commit to an hour of adoration each week, there is a sign–up sheet in the narthex.

Spiritual Reading—There are many good Advent books available to assist you on your spiritual journey to Christmas.

Service to the Needy—The Sharing Tree and PADS are just a couple of the ways we can help spread the joy of this sea-

son with our less fortunate brothers and sisters. Think of ways you and your family can offer your time and energy to be of

assistance to someone in need.

Marian Devotions—During Advent, we share the joyful expectation that our Blessed Mother must have felt as she

looked forward to the birth of Jesus. The Rosary and other devotions help us journey with the Blessed Virgin through this

season. On Tuesday, December 8, we observe the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, a holy day of obligation. Mass-

es at will be celebrated at 6:15 and 8:15 A.M., and 5:00 P.M. There is also a Vigil Mass on Monday, December 7, at

7:00 P.M.

Advent Family Prayer—Advent is a wonderful season to begin or develop a program of daily family prayer. The fol-

lowing are some traditional ways of observing this holy season in the home:

The Advent Wreath is a centur ies old custom that or iginated in Germany. The four candles on the wreath repre-

sent the four weeks of Advent. One candle is lighted on each of the four Sundays of Advent to signify the approaching light

of Jesus’ coming. The circular wreath signifies the endlessness of God. Green branches remind us of life and hope. At home,

the wreath can be lit at the family meal accompanied by a special Advent meal prayer or Scripture reading.

The Advent Calendar consists of a biblical scene with the 24 days before Christmas marked on it, each date with a

little door concealing an image behind it. As the doors are opened each day, the story of Jesus’ birth is told with pictures and

Scripture passages. Religious Advent Calendars are available at Catholic bookshops.

The Manger Scene traces its or igin to St. Francis of Assisi, who wanted to make the story of Jesus’ birth more real to

believers. There is an old Advent custom where children place a piece of straw in the empty manger every time they do a good

deed. The straw of their good deeds softens the bed of the newborn baby Jesus at Christmas. Also, on the Fourth Sunday of

Advent, parishioners will be invited to bring in their image of the Baby Jesus to be blessed at Mass.

Page 5

Spiritual Works of Mercy

How can we be merciful like the Father in this First Week of Advent? The Collect (opening prayer at Mass) asks

God to give us the resolve to run forth to meet Christ. So, we begin this new Church year running once more to be with Christ who

is coming to us. At this meeting, let us be found doing works of mercy. The Spiritual Works of Mercy are: counseling the doubt-

ful, instructing the ignorant, admonishing the sinner, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving injuries, bearing wrongs patiently,

and praying for the living and the dead.

Who needs mercy this week?

What righteous deed of mercy will I do?

FAITH FORMATION

Faith Matt-ers

By Matt Pozen—Director of Parish Faith Formation

Vatican II: 50 Years Later

Page 6

In this bulletin series, we have been exploring the history of the 21 ecumenical councils recognized by the Catholic Church. The first eight met between 325 and 870 near the city of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, while the remaining 13 councils met in various cities in the areas of Italy, France, and Switzerland. These 13 western coun-cils can be divided into a group of seven medieval councils (1123 to 1312), three renaissance councils (1414 to 1517), and three modern councils (1545 to 1965).

Last week we looked at the aftermath of the second modern council, Vatican I (1869-70), by exploring the pontificates of Leo XIII (1878-1903), Pius X (1903-14), and Benedict XV (1914-22). It was during Benedict’s reign that Europe descend-ed into World War I (1914-18).

The Versailles Treaty of 1919 inflicted heavy penalties and reparations on Germany. Pope Benedict was prophetic in his criticism of the harsh terms of this treaty, fearing that it would lead to more problems in the future. Before he died, Bene-dict was able to complete the compilation of all Church law into the 1917 Code of Canon Law, and he dismantled some of the anti-modernist paranoia of Pius X. He also appointed Achille Ratti (the future Pope Pius XI) as ambassador to Poland, and Eugenio Pacelli (the future Pope Pius XII) as ambassador to Germany.

In 1922, Achille Ratti was elected to the chair of St. Peter, taking the name Pius XI (1922-39). During these years Eu-rope saw the rise of Fascism in Germany (under Adolf Hitler) and Italy (under Benito Mussolini). It was Pius XI who negotiat-ed the Lateran Treaty of 1929 with Mussolini, officially establishing Vatican City as an independent state. Blinded by his fear of communism in the USSR, Pius was all too willing to lend his support to Fascism. In 1930, after the Anglican Church approved the use of artificial contraception for married couples, Pius issued his encyclical Casti Connubii, condemning all forms of birth control, even natural ones. In 1933, through his ambassador to Germany (Eugenio Pacelli), Pius established a concordat (treaty) with Hitler’s Germany. To his credit, after witnessing the harsh policies of Fascism in Germany, Pius later condemned Nazism through a letter in German called Mit Brennender Sorge (“With Burning Zeal”), which was smug-gled into Germany in 1937 and read from the pulpits of every Catholic Church.

In 1939, just six months before Hitler invaded Poland and World War II began, Pope Pius XI died and was succeeded by Eugenio Pacelli, who took the name Pius XII (1939-58). As World War II progressed, the Nazi genocide of Jews intensified, such that by the end of the war almost six million had lost their lives. Trying to remain diplomatically neutral during the war, Pius never issued a clear condemnation of the genocide, though the Vatican did much to shelter thousands of Jews and other refugees. Ever since the war, there has been an ongoing debate about the so-called “silence” of Pope Pius XII, and whether he could have done more.

On a more positive note, during a radio address in 1944 Pius spoke positively about democracy, thus moving away from the anti-modern stance of his predecessors. This openness to modernity early in Pius’ reign can also be seen in his 1943 encyclical Divino Afflante Spiritu, which embraced some of the modern methods of interpreting the Bible. He also lent sup-port to the “liturgical movement”, which strove to reform the liturgy by going back beyond the medieval and Tridentine mass to the development of the liturgy in the early Church. This “return to the sources” of Christian life (the Bible and the writings of the early Church Fathers) led to a movement, especially in France, known as La Nouvelle Theologie (The New Theology), and some of the theological leaders of this movement would later on become key voices at Vatican II (1962-65). (One of the young German theologians in this movement was Fr. Joseph Ratzinger, who would later be elected as Pope Benedict XVI in 2005.)

By the 1950s, toward the end of his reign, Pius XII swung in a more conservative direction. In 1950 he issued an encycli-cal called Humani Generis, in which he seemed to step back from his earlier support for the Biblical movement and the New Theology. Some of the key leaders of the New Theology movement were silenced and prevented from teaching and writing. In that same year, Pius officially defined the dogma of the Assumption of Mary (that at the end of her life Mary was assumed by God, body and soul, into heaven.) Alongside Pius IX’s 1854 definition of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, these two decrees mark the only times that the prerogative of papal infallibility has been invoked. In 1951, Pius mitigated the traditional 12-hour fast before receiving communion, changing it to one hour. This allowed the possibility of celebrating evening masses, so the 1950s saw the rise of the Saturday evening parish mass. After 1951, Pius withdrew more and more from the public eye, surrounding himself with a few ultra-orthodox advisers and cared for by the infamous Sister Pasquelina. He died on October 10, 1958.

MINISTRIES

Just as in each of our lives we always need to begin again, to get up again, to rediscover the meaning of the goal of our lives, so also for the great human family it is always necessary to rediscover the common horizon to-ward which we are journeying. The horizon of hope! This is the horizon that makes for a good journey. The season of Advent…restores this horizon of hope, a hope which does not disappoint for it is founded on God’s Word. A hope which does not disappoint, simply be-cause the Lord never disappoints! He is faithful! He does not disappoint! Let us think about and feel this beauty.

The model of this spiritual disposition, of this way of being and journeying in life, is the Virgin Mary. A sim-ple girl from the country who carries within her heart the fullness of hope in God! In her womb, God’s hope took flesh, it became man, it became history: Jesus Christ. Her Magnificat is the canticle of the People of God on a journey, and of all men and women who hope in God and in the power of his mercy. Let us allow ourselves to be guided by her, she who is mother, a mama, and knows how to guide us. Let us allow ourselves to be guided by her during this season of active waiting and watchfulness. (Source: Pope Francis’ Angelus message on the First Sunday of Advent, December 1, 2013)

This Advent season, let yourself be guided by the Vir-gin Mary to the Our Lady, Mother of the Eucharist Ado-ration Chapel to receive the hope and love of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. During your time of adoration be watchful and joyous in anticipation of the coming of the Messiah. This feeling cannot be bought at any store, or found under any tree; it can only originate in ones heart and soul after experiencing the beauty of Emmanuel in all of His glory in the Holy Eucharist.

The Perpetual Adoration Chapel is opened 7 days a week and 24 hours a day. Don’t delay. Come and adore Him, Christ the Lord!

Seeking Parishioner for Adoration Chapel
