Environmental Engineering program, formerly known as Environmental Science, is diligently working to change the perception of the program as only being known as the aquaculture lab. STEM skills and applied life sciences knowledge is the new direction we are focusing on. The Environmental teachers have been meeting with their program advisory members, Science department teacher, Mr. Atkinson, and Science Department Head, Mrs. Wallace to highlight our STEM skills taught in the program. Mr. Atkinson, who teaches Biotechnology, believes the Environmental Engineering program, utilizing the Environmental Science frameworks skills, will mesh perfectly by adding biotechnology knowledge and laboratory STEM skills into the program. GNBVT Environmental Engineering program students with a solid foundation in formal laboratory skills could transfer their skills to a variety of career pathways including: biotechnology, environmental engineering, microbiology, lab technician, and applied water technology. Carpentry The junior class of carpentry students attended a Career day at the New England Carpenters’ Training Center. The junior class of Carpentry students along with their teachers, Mr. Fortin, and Mr. Goncalves, traveled to Millbury, Massachusetts to learn what a career as a union carpenter career might look like. The Carpentry students, along with their teachers, were given guided tours of the training facility by members of the NERCC staff. The students walked throughout the facility where current apprentices were working on projects. Live demonstrations included: infection control risk assessment, interior systems, flooring, residential wood framing, scaffolding erector certification, cabinet installation, door hardware, finish carpentry, welding, concrete formwork, insulated concrete forms, pile driving, underwater welding, exterior siding, and stair layout and framing. The carpentry students learned about the vast field of carpentry career options available to union carpenters. The junior and senior carpentry class along with their teachers traveled to One Dalton Place in Boston to learn about the construction of a new multi-million dollar high rise condominium construction project. The Four Seasons Private Residences in the Boston Back Bay neighborhood stands 65 stories high as the tallest residential building in Boston at 742 feet high and will house 160 residences.

Donald Poineau, a 1985 graduate of the carpentry shop and also a Carpentry Program Advisory member, who was working on the One Dalton Place construction project as a foreman, arranged the visit. Prior to the visit Mr. Arruda and Mr. Fortin had to attend a safety course with the safety officer on the job. The students were given a safety talk prior to touring the building. The safety officer and the workers on the job reminded the students of the importance of safety everywhere on the premise. The students toured the site viewing many different trades at various stages of the project. The carpenters on the job were using the newest technology. The students viewed the computer system that housed all of the blueprints and the computer

tablets the workers used to work in various areas of the building. Students met the carpenters on the project and observed workers installing interior system components, such as layout work, metal stud and drywall. The students heard from journeyman carpenters, apprentices and foreman on the job. The workers explained to the students what their role on the job was and how they obtained their position on the job.

Plumbing Plumbing Senior Brenan Vaughan has been nominated as the Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association (PHCC), Voc-Tech Plumbing All-Star for Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech. The PHCC of Massachusetts recognizes a graduating senior from each Voc-Tech Plumbing program in Massachusetts who is planning to enter the plumbing industry and has: an average of 85% or better in his or her shop and related courses, good attendance, a good behavior record, and good academic grades. Brenan will attend the annual PHCC Plumbing and Heating Trade Show held on March 10, 2018 at the Royal Plaza Hotel in Marlborough to receive his award. The 2018 PHCC of MA All-Star Award Ceremony takes place in the Grand Ballroom of the hotel. The All-Star award includes a set of plumbing tools valued at approximately $500.00 and a plumbing, continuing education scholarship for Brenan to complete his plumbing licensure education requirement. The award ceremony takes place before the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters’ open forum code seminar. Plumbing contractors and plumbers throughout the state attend the code seminar and are present for the ceremony. A portion of the trade show is an employability breakout session for the plumbing students. Plumbing contractors from across Massachusetts during the breakout session (Employability Panel: “How to Get a Job and Keep It!”) discuss proper work habits and the expectations that plumbing contractors have for their employees. The plumbing teachers, Mr. Amaral, Mr. Avila, Mr. Soares, Mr. Thibault and Academy A Administrator Mr. Haggerty, will attend the annual PHCC Plumbing and Heating Trade Show held on March 10, at the Royal Plaza Hotel in Marlborough to see Brenan receive his award. Also, Brenan will be recognized in the spring edition of New England Progress Magazine, a magazine covering the news about New England plumbing and heating contractors and issues related to the plumbing and heating industry. Academy B Medical Assistant The first Health & Wellness clinic this year for faculty will take place on Friday. The program will run for the remainder of the school year. Employees will have their blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose evaluated. This program reinforces learning from telephone, scheduling, communication, blood pressure, cholesterol screening, and glucose monitoring skills for the students. In SkillsUSA news, Jillian Sears (junior) will perform in Job Skills Demonstration. Adiniza Goncalves (senior) and Meadow Velez (junior) will compete in Medical Terminology. Nathan Correia (senior), Kaylee Pavao (senior), and Sharon Jacob (junior) will compete in Medical Assistant. We are excited to report, for the first time Medical Assistant students will be participating in Business Professionals of America. Five students will be competing in Medical Office Procedures. We are pleased to mention, we have four male students in our freshman class this year. Early Childhood Education We are very excited to announce the program has obtained NAEYC accreditation once again. The staff worked tirelessly and diligently to ensure the review went smoothly. The pre-k students recently worked with the Carpentry senior students to make bird houses. It was a fabulous integration lesson between both career majors.

Mrs. Brightman has integrated more STEM lessons to her curriculum for the children and junior students to experience. The new placement site at Hawthorn Medical has started for the junior students. The program is going well and we have had positive feedback from the site. The junior students were nominated to be Voc-Tech Artisans and the interviews have started with Media Technology. Stayed tuned for a snapshot into the world of Early Childhood Education. Dental Assistant The senior students attended the Yankee Dental Conference in Boston on January 25th. This conference is New England’s largest meeting for professionals and the fifth largest dental meeting in the country. Our students were fortunate to attend and experience over 450 exhibitors demonstrating the most innovative dental technology solutions in the field. This conference is the best source in New England for industry professionals on the cutting-edge of oral health care. We are continuing to work with the Southcoast Community Dental Care to provide free oral health care prevention to the students at GNB. The final plans are being made to have our first preventative oral care visit in the school for our junior students. Nursing/Health Services The instructors have worked closely with Southcoast Hospitals Group, specifically Laura Ribeiro, to obtain eight donated hospital beds. The donation of these beds has saved the district at least $32,000. The beds will replace four broken beds currently in the sophomore and junior shop areas. The remaining four beds will be used for the new instructor and expansion of the program. Mr. Zeb Arruda and his staff were very accommodating and helpful in moving the beds from St. Luke’s hospital to GNB. The junior instructor has completed the application for the CNA certification testing in May. We will be receiving the dates soon. Culinary Arts Erin Almond, a junior in Culinary Arts, won an Artisan Award for her work on the Julia Child project at the Rotch Jones Duff exhibit. The permanent freshman are now in place. They will be expanding both the breakfast and lunch menu to obtain experience with a variety of food preparation. Legal & Protective The junior and senior students are receiving their 911 training on site. They will be obtaining the equipment training portion in May at the State 911 Department in Middleborough, MA. The meeting that took place with Chief Cordeiro and Mrs. Romanelli in January was very informative. Chief Cordeiro is most definitely an asset to the LPS program. Not only is he an active participant on the Advisory Board, he is reaching out to the town of Dartmouth and Fairhaven to encourage them to become more active with our students in the LPS program. Mrs. Romanelli had a tour of the headquarters and learned about the opportunities that are available for our students. The sophomore students participated in the New Bedford Housing Authority and Boston Food Bank Brown Bag Project on January 26th to deliver food to those in need. Across the career majors in Academy B Three of the career majors in Academy B completed and submitted applications to the GNBVT Education Foundation. We are hoping the foundation will afford these career majors the finances and opportunity to purchase some equipment.

Academic Principal Report……. The Special Education department is proud that all of the teachers in the Math, Science, English, Literacy, and English Language Learners departments, as well as, five History teachers have been RISE trained (Revitalizing (Inclusive) Instruction for Students and Educators) using Dr. Deborah Harris’ program. We have also trained teaching assistants from each of the departments. GNBVT is currently in the second year of our initiative in educating regular education teachers on the disability categories and best teaching practices for students with disabilities. This district goal aligns with the Special Education department’s philosophy that every student deserves an opportunity to be included in the regular education setting. Through the collaboration of GNBVT and MO L.I.F.E. (agency that supports individuals with disabilities), we have three current students and one graduate who have been through a training process in which they receive on-site job training to obtain employment. The businesses include Cumberland’s and White’s of Westport. We have other students who are receiving training in volunteer opportunities. This is helpful as we move students into the workplace upon graduation from GNBVT. The science department has been working hard aligning curriculum to the new state standards. The Biology curriculum team has met and has been working on scope and sequence and common assessments. The Physics and Chemistry teams are beginning their meetings. Science teachers Robert DeFreitas and Scott Atkinson have been award grant money to employ arduinos in Physical Science, Physics and Biotechnology. The grant will allow for integration of two sciences over the course of junior and senior year science courses. The arduinos give a way to see modern technology in the world of modern science.

Our Winter Season is in full gear and it has been an exciting season thus far. Our Hockey Team is well on their way to qualifying for the MIAA Tournament for the second consecutive season after not qualifying since 1999. The team plays with a mixture of speed, skill and physicality that was helped them to a current record of 9-6-1.

Our Track Program has been highlighted by the consistent improvement of Senior Djeury Amado. DJ is coming off last Spring where we own the D2 State Championship in the 100m. DJ is undefeated this Winter in the 55m. He has broken the school record on multiple occasions this season including the current record of 6.44 seconds at the East Coast Track & Field Invitational. DJ will be competing in the National Invitational in New York at the end of the winter season. Finally, Coach Mark Thornhill and GNBVT hosted the school’s 30th Annual Janiak Invitational Meet with over 400 student-athletes competing.

Our Boys’ Basketball team has struggled to one win at this point of the season. However, Coach Wildrick has been leading this extremely young group of student-athletes in a way that will benefit the program in the long term. Our Girls’ Basketball team looks to be on their way to yet another MIAA Tournament. Their record of 9-6 leaves the team 1 win shy of qualifying. The team will be looking for another deep run into the tournament.

Finally, our State Champion Baseball Team was honored by the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches Association at their Annual Champions Brunch. Head Coach Rick Avila and former players Jared Methia and Tylor Arruda were invited to accept awards on behalf of the team.
