STORY: Noah ABOUT THIS CLASS: The Bible story for this Frolic Family Faith class is from chapters 6–9 in Genesis. You will read the story “Noah” on pages 4-5 in the Frolic First Bible. Because of human evil, corruption, and violence, God grieved and planned to blot out all the people and animals in creation. Enter Noah, a righteous man. God commanded him to make an ark, gather his family and the animals, and wait for the rain. Noah obeyed God, and the storm of all storms wiped out every living thing from the earth’s surface. From this story of destruction comes a covenant. Noah, his family, and the animals begin again after the waters recede, with the rainbow as a reminder of God’s promise to never again flood the earth. A Parent’s View of the Story Expectant and new parents may see the story of Noah depicted in baby toys and nursery gear. Adorable, right? But if they look beyond the cute animal pairs, big boats, and colorful rainbows, they will realize the depth of this story. Humankind’s wickedness leads God to plan a catastrophic flood that will wipe out all life. Only Noah and his family are spared (along with all those cute animals). Water is central to Noah’s story, and water plays a part in parenting too. A pregnant mother’s waters suspend the child until childbirth. A baby is bathed for the first time. A nursing mother drinks water to stay hydrated. A parent adds water to formula to prepare a bottle. Baby’s things are laundered again and again. This story can remind parents of water’s drastic power, paired with a rainbow promise from God. A Child’s View of the Story The story of Noah is a vivid one with many parts that appeal to young children. They can build a boat, fill it with animals, and take them out, over and over and over again. They also like to float things in water, make storm sound effects, and discover colors in the sky. Exploring these concrete parts of the story will appeal to little ones, but make sure that God’s promise is central! “I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” —Genesis 9:13 Bible Verse Invite parents and children to face each other. Caregivers with infants can lay their child down on a blanket. In this ritual, caregivers move child’s arms across their chest to make a rainbow for each line. STORY: NoahABOUT THIS CLASS: The Bible story for this Frolic Family Faith class is from chapters 6–9 in Genesis. You will read the story “Noah” on pages 4-5 in the Frolic First Bible.

Prep TimePutting the Story in PerspectiveIn the first verses of Genesis, God created the heavens and the earth. Only a few chapters later, things have turned ruinous.

A Parent’s View of the StoryExpectant and new parents may see the story of Noah depicted in baby toys and nursery gear.

A Child’s View of the StoryThe story of Noah is a vivid one with many parts that appeal to young children. They can build a boat, fill it with animals, and take them out, over and over and over again. They also like to float things in water, make storm sound effects, and discover colors in the sky. Exploring these concrete parts of the story will appeal to little ones, but make sure that God’s promise is central!

Gather Time

STORY: Noah

If families arrive early:Encourage parents and children to meet each other. You can also have music playing in the background and a center available for families to explore together

before the class begins. Select the center that best fits your space and available materials.

If you open the door at the start time: Invite families to sign in, select a scarf from the basket, and sit in a circle.

• Print the Welcome sign and post it at the entrance.

• Place the sign-in sheet and nametags near the door.

• Place a basket of colorful scarves or other fabric pieces near the door.

WelcomeGather together in a circle. Welcome, families! We are together today to explore the story of Noah in our lives as caregivers of young children. Lead families in singing a welcoming song, tracks 1-3 on the Frolic Faith Music CD, while children wave their scarves. Then teach the ritual from page 23.

ShareLead families to share about a recent unexpected moment of a fresh start or “do-over.” To start the circle, take the lead in celebrating an unexpected moment, or ask a caregiver who would be comfortable being the first to share. Jot down notes in the space to the right so you remember what to include in later prayers.

PrayerDear God, We give you thanks for the unexpected moments in our parenting journeys and our children’s journeys. We ask for your presence and guidance in our community gathered here today. Incorporate the unexpected events the caregivers named.Amen.

STORY: Noah

Hold up the story basket that contains a Frolic First Bible for every family. Place it in the middle of the circle. Lead the story basket rhyme below.

Group StorytellingLet’s hear a story from the Bible! This story is about Noah, his family, and lots of animals. It is on pages 4-5. Hold up the Bible Story Poster of “Noah” so everyone can see the picture. Read the story from the back of the poster in a lively, animated way.

Ask these questions and encourage toddlers to respond.• Point to the big boat. Who built this big boat?

• Who was with Noah on the boat? Point to them!

• I wonder what it sounded like on the boat. Can you make an animal noise?

• What came down from the sky? What do you do when it rains?

• Who put a rainbow in the sky?

Ask families to point to the sentence on the bottom of page 5. God took care of Noah and his family during the long and rainy storm. God takes care of you and your family. Whether it is stormy or sunny or any other kind of weather, God takes care of you! Show how you care for each other in stormy weather. Invite families to sway together to an imaginary storm, with caregivers holding tight to their little ones.

STORY: Noah

What is the biggest storm you’ve ever seen? What about the most spectacular rainbow? Share stories about rainstorms and rainbows. Emphasize the care and protection of God throughout these stormy times.

One-on-One StorytellingNow it’s time for you to read the story together. Give time for caregivers to read the book to their children. Once they’ve read the story “Noah” together on pages 4-5, offer these tips.

For InfantsParade pairs of walking, flying, and slithering animals up and down your baby’s body by walking fingers along legs, arms, or tummies.

For Toddlers on the MoveSome young children have been on a boat and others have not. Share with your child what it feels like to bob up and down in water, get sprayed by a wave, cast a fishing pole, or use a paddle.

For Talkative ToddlersAsk your child to point to and name the different animals and the rainbow colors in the story. Try counting the raindrops too.

Caregiver Conversation

Choose an instrument such as a tambourine or chime and play it to get the children’s attention. You can also say or sing the song at right.

Sing this song, track 25 on the Frolic Faith Music CD, to transition to Play Time.

Prior to the end of Play Time give the children a 2-minute notice that it is almost time to stop playing. At the end of 2 minutes play the same instrument that you played at the beginning of Play Time to get the

attention of families.

Summing It UpThank you for reading and playing with us today! It was so much fun to learn about Noah. We can remember that God cared for Noah and his family and all the animals. God takes care of you and your family too! What will you remember about today? Invite any children and caregivers to respond.

Closing RitualInvite caregivers to engage in the ritual from page 23 with their child. Then lead the group in a closing song, such as “Halle, Halle, Hallelujah,” track 14 on the Frolic Faith Music CD.

PrayerLead families in this simple prayer. Add other prayer topics and concerns that may have come up during your time together. For very young infants, caregivers may move their child’s arms across the body at chest height to make a rainbow.

Let’s make praying hands.

Dear God,Thank you for your rainbow promise. (Swoosh arms across the sky.)Thank you for your rainbow promise. (Swoosh arms again.)Amen. (Make praying hands again.)
