Reminders fromthe Diary
From the HeadmasterWhy is it that once a year on 14 February we areprompted to celebrate love and for whateverreasons, and whether we agree with them or not, find ourselves pressurised to buy or make cards, send flowers or wrap up gifts, purchase or eatchocolates and remember to say how much we carefor those closest and dearest around us? I am notsaying this is a bad thing, I do have to wonder whywe dont do this every other 364 (or 365 this year)
days of the year.
So on Valentines Day, whilst taking my normalweekly assembly for the Pre-Prep, instead of talkingabout this one day of love, I adapted the message tothe boys about being kind and loving to theirfriends and family not just for one day but everysingle day. It costs absolutely nothing to be kind
and so much is gained from it.
About 12 years, ago my wife and I watched the film,Pay it Forward. This film had such a profoundeffect on us that we decided to instil the essence ofthe orginal simple idea into our own family core val-ues and code of life. The idea behind Pay ItForwardis that when someone does a good deed orsomething nice, you pay it forward to anotherperson and they in turn do the same, and so on,and so on. This is basically an extreme act of faithin the goodness of people the ultimate pyramid
scheme. Just imagine the possibilities if we all didthis unconditionally, not expecting the good deed tobe returned directly to ourselves, but to be passedon to someone else who needs it. If everyone didone more kind thing a day in the world, the worldwould be a much better place. In every interactionwe have, be it online or in person, we have a choiceas to how we choose to act. Whats your choice? Itcould start with a simple smile and thank you tothe security guard on your way out through the
gates, or with letting someone go before you in thetraffic these simple acts of kindness can have
such a profound effect.

From the IT Desk...
Typing
The typing courses across all grades are progressing very well! We have spent the lastfew weeks learning about correct finger positioning. The majority of boys can nowtype out the letters on the home row (ASDF JKL; ) without looking at the keyboard!Slowly, they are also beginning to use their fingers correctly to reach the bottom and
top row keys.
Typing is an invaluable skill in todays world, and will becoming even more so in theyears to come. So I urge parents to encourage their boys to practise correct typing every
now and then, when they have a free moment, instead of just letting them play games.
TIP
Each finger rests on a particular key in the home row of the keyboard when not typing,in order to keep "grounded" and oriented at all times. The home keys (ASDF JKL; ) areoutlined in yellow on the above diagram. The thumbs remain in the air, or very gently
in contact with the keys below.
Computer Club
The new slot for the IT Club is Fridays 3:00 pm 5:00 pm. In these sessions, we try tocover some really cool stuff which we do not unfortunately always find the time to doduring formal teaching time.
Some of the skills taught include Graphic and Web Design, Game Design and AdvancedAnimation. The boys are exposed to some really powerful softwares such as Photoshop,
Dreamweaver, InDesign and After Effects.
Please encourage your boys to attend should they be free during these times.

Congratulations to the U11A Basketball Team for winning the Sacred Heart JuniorsBasketball Tournament, held at Sacred Heart College on the 8th of January 2012. The
team won 3/4 games played.
Congratulations also to our 1st Team Basketball Squad. The team has fared very well
thus far in the season. They have played a total of 10 games ; winning 9 and drawing 1.
Thank you to all the parents who came out to support our boys during the Senior PrepBasketball Festival that was hosted at St Johns, on 29 January 2012. Special thanksto those who helped out with the braaing and running of the tuck-shop. Just over 150
boys and girls came over to participate in what was a great exhibition of the game.
Parents wishing to help out at the upcoming 1st Team Festival, on the 3rd of March,
could get in touch with Mrs Tania Shefer or with me, [email protected]
I also would like to make special mention of two young men who very ably handled allour First Aid needs at the festival. Luka de Jesus and Farai Thondhlana recentlycompleted their Level 1 First Aid course, and both very generously gave up their
Saturday morning to come and help out at the festival.
With the school nurse on stand-by, the two boys were exceptional in their handling of
casualties on the day.
Well done, boys!

The St Johns swimming team has won the A25 league gala for a record 3 weeks in arow! We often hear that success breeds success, but it is seldom that we encounter
such an excellent example. In the first term last year, our U9s began winning theirraces and, as the season progressed, the older boys became more determined andbegan to win their races, too. As the new U9s joined the team this term and they, too,had enormous success, there has been a developing sense of excitement and purposeamongst the swimmers. Each week they have swum in the galas with moredetermination and they are beginning to believe that they can be a winning team. Theboys have been inspired by the results and we have had an enormous increase inparticipation at early morning training sessions. Despite the cold and overcast weather, we have had up to 50 boys in the pool and it is wonderful to watch thedeveloping sense of team spirit and camaraderie. In a sport like swimming, where
fitness has a large impact on individual results, the effort you put into each trainingsession determines your success in the galas. The boys have come to realise that theyare responsible for their own success and are learning to push themselves at trainingsessions and at galas to produce their best results. They are getting to know whattimes they have to swim to qualify for a place in the A team and they are constantly
striving to improve their performance.
Last weekend, the UIII and LIII swimmers were offered the opportunity to swim an open water race. Eleven St Johns Prep boys swam the Platinum Mile in the BuffelspoortDam. For many of them, it was their first ever open-water swim and they were a littledaunted by the big stretch of water. However, they tackled the event bravely and every
one of them completed the event with little difficulty. They were very proud ofthemselves and are very keen to try another swim at another venue.
It has been enormously rewarding for me to watch the progress the boys have made
and to witness the pleasure their success has brought. We will probably be asked to
move up to the A50 league next season (which means starting right from the bottom
again) but I believe that our boys are ready for the challenge and that they have
developed the confidence and self-belief to deal with the tougher competition and
greater physical demands that go with it.

Yes, I would like a pet hedgehog. I want a pet hedgehog because I dont have a pet anda hedgehog sounds good to me. I would also like a pet hedgehog because it could get rid
of small snakes in my garden and I think they are pretty cute! It can also live in hotplaces and cold places.
By Jamie Diesel
No, I would not like a hedgehog as a pet because a hedgehogs spines are sharp andthey will hurt me! A hedgehog is also nocturnal so I wont be able to play with it. When
it is frightened it curls into a ball and I wouldnt be able to play with it then either!
By Max Mukami
I would not like a hedgehog because it should not be held in captivity. It needs lots ofspace to roam around. For example, if you got a forest hedgehog you would need to
have a lot of trees in your yard.

Whilst we hope and anticipate that all boys will feel able to approach their teachers or amember of staff should they feel that something is wrong, we understand that this willnot always be the case. Some boys may feel unsure of how to approach a staff memberor unsure of what they should say. For this reason we are continuing to use the iCarebox, which is now located in Mrs Powells office. We also have an electronic version where boys can contact the Pastoral Care Team at [email protected]. ThePastoral Care team is hoping that the boys make use of these initiatives to highlightanything that they CARE about at St Johns Prep.
The aim is to provide the boys with an alternative avenue to voice their feelings around whatever may be on their minds. This extends beyond the reporting of just peerdifficulties (such as bullying) the aim is to further enhance the quality of the St Johnsexperience. All notes placed in the box or sent via email will be treated confidentially
and actions instituted where possible.
We ask that you encourage your son to make use of the iCare initiative so that we can
make his day all that he hopes it can be.

Art club and extra classes
From the beginning of next term, Mr Poco is starting an Art Club (for LIII and UIII boys) and extra art classes for juniorboys. Senior boys are encouraged to join the Art Club on Tuesdays from 14h00 -15h00 or Thursdays from
15h00-16h00. Juniors may arrange extra art lessons with Mr Poco at alternative times and on alternative days.
We hope to see the senior boys joining the Art Club to create various exciting art works with mediums they do notnormally use in class, such as print making, photography, oil painting and many more. This will be a fantastic opportunity
for any boy who wishes to develop his art skills.

Walking Away
C. Day-Lewis
It is eighteen years ago, almost to the day
A sunny day with the leaves just turning.
The touch-lines new-ruled since I watched you play
Your first game of football, then, like a satellite
Wrenched from its orbit, go drifting away
Behind a scatter of boys, I can seeYou walking away from me towards the school
With the pathos of a half-fledged thing set free
Into a wilderness, the gait of one
Who finds no path where the path should be.
The hesitant figure, eddying away
Like a winged seed loosened from its parent stem.
Has something I never quite grasp to convey
About natures give-and-take the small, the scorching
Ordeals which fire ones irresolute clay.
I have had worse partings, but none that so
Gnaws at my mind still. Perhaps it is roughly
Saying what God alone could perfectly show
How selfhood begins with a walking away,
And love is proved in the letting go.
