Ricardo Clark earned his first U.S. national team start in 19 months for Wednesday night’s exhibition game at Panama after scoring in stoppage time against Venezuela last weekend.Clark, who replaced Jeff Larentowicz in the midfield, had not started for the Americans since June 26, 2010, when he was stripped of the ball leading to Ghana’s opening goal in the 2-1 overtime loss that eliminated the U.S. from the World Cup. He was replaced that night in the 31st minute.U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann made four changes to his starting lineup, also inserting goal-keeper Nick Rimando, left back Zack Loyd and forward Chris Wondolowski in place of Bill Hamid, Heath Pearce and Benny Feilhaber.Rimando, Loyd and Wondolowski started for the first time since the 1-1 tie against Chile on Jan. 22 last year.Pearce, Larentowicz and Feilhaber were joined on the bench by goalkeeper Sean Johnson, defender Jeff Parke, midfielder Brad Evans and forward C.J. Sapong.

A 59-year-old man was arrested following an alleged racially aggravated public order offense at Saturday’s FA Cup soccer match between Liverpool and Manchester United.Merseyside Police said the man from North Wales had been taken to a police station, where he would be questioned by officers, Sky News reported.Police made the arrest after studying TV footage following the posting of an image on Twitter, which showed a man making a monkey gesture in the crowd, according to multiple reports. It was the first time the two teams had played each other since Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was found to have racially abused Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a league match last year.Suarez was banned for eight games by the English Football Association (FA), which found him guilty of “using insulting words towards” Evra.Liverpool won Saturday’s match 2-1 to progress to the fifth round of the knockout competition.

Mexican club Chivas introduced its new coach on Thursday, selecting little-known Ignacio Ambriz to replace Fernando Quirarte, who resigned on Saturday after the club’s third straight loss to open the Clausura season.Ambriz coached Mexican club San Luis until last year, and was an assistant for Javier Aguirre at Spanish club Atletico Madrid. Aguirre went on to coach Mexico in the 2010 World Cup. He was fired late last year as coach of Spanish side Zaragoza.Chivas has won the most Mexican league titles with 11, but it has never before started a season with three straight losses.“I’m aware of where I am,’’ Ambriz told reporters, alluding to the club’s popularity in Mexico. “I’m exicted. I know the challenge is very large, but I feel capable to making progress.’’Chivas has been struggling for stability. Ambriz is the 14th coach since Jorge Vergara bought the Guadalajara club in 2002, and the fourth in the last year and a half.Ambriz coached 70 matches with San Luis, winning 21, drawing 23 and losing 26.“Perhaps I was not the favorite,’’ he said. “But my career is very short. I know this will be a difficult challenge.’’Ambriz played for Mexico in the 1994 World Cup in the United States. He will be on the bench Sunday in a match at Mexico City-based Pumas.

Former Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni regrets his role in Serie B match-fixing last season but insists he was trying only to help his club.Doni was among 16 people arrested across Italy in December in an ongoing investigation into match-fixing and illegal betting on games. He spent five days in solitary confinement, then released on house arrest. He has admitted to helping change the outcome of Atalanta’s 3-0 win over Piacenza as well as a 1-1 draw at Ascoli, but says those are the only two games he had a hand in and any allegations he caused Atalanta’s relegation from Serie A are completely unfounded.“That’s blasphemous,’’ Doni said in interviews published on Saturday in Italian newspapers, including Gazzetta dello Sport and La Repubblica. “I bled for the Atalanta shirt. Even the mistakes I made were made because I wanted to take Atalanta back up to Serie A. It was an obsession for me. I would have done anything. Indeed, I did do anything. I betrayed the sport.“I still don’t understand really why I did it. I was an imbecile and there is no justification. I asked myself so many times in my cell. Relegation scarred me, I felt like the first person responsible. Look, I have never sold a game. Isn’t there at least a difference in this? Between someone who does it for money and who does it for the love of his own team?’’

Most of the suspect games involve Serie B or lower league teams, but several Serie A matches are also under investigation.Atalanta defender Andrea Masiello is currently giving evidence to the Cremona prosecutors over match-fixing involving his former team Bari. He has said that he was approached on four occasions last season, before games against Palermo, Chievo, Roma and Samp-doria.“I only hope that my story serves as a lesson to others,’’ Doni said. “I hope other footballers see what happened to me and understand. That they’re not as stupid and instead do what Masiello is doing at the moment. He has been very brave and, unlike me, had the intelli-gence to denounce everything. Breaking this conspiracy that is devastating football.“I regret what I did. Also because I ended up in prison. And prison helps you understand your own mistakes a lot.’’Doni feels the problem is far more widespread than previously thought and stems from a “cultural problem’’ in Italy.“There are many who betray the sport. Too many,’’ Doni said. “It’s a cultural problem. Here, it’s normal not to put the boot in on your opponents, not to relegate another team if there isn’t a reason for you in the standings, to have an agreement. It happens that you can be asked for a result on the pitch. I’ve been asked and I’ve asked.“The problem assumes greater proportions when betting comes into it. But the starting point is a cultural defect which doesn’t just in-volve footballers but also others such as referees who see everything but don’t do anything, the fourth man, the federation’s observers, journalists ... why has nothing ever happened all the times a player has gone into the changing room of their opponents after an ‘unex-pected’ result?’’In June, 16 people were arrested as part of the first wave of the inquiry, and Doni was then placed under investigation.Doni said at the time that he was innocent but in August he was banned from football for 3 1/2 years by the Italian football federation, and Atalanta - which was promoted to Serie A for this season - was given a six-point penalty.“Those six months were hell,’’ Doni said. “I kept telling everyone I was innocent, but inside I was breaking. My wife understood some-thing was wrong. Confessing was a release.’’Doni admits he is not sure what he will do with the rest of his life, with a return to football all but impossible.“I wanted to be a director at Atalanta but I know that’s impossible now,’’ he said. “I know that I’m finished with football. I don’t know what I’ll do, it’s still too recent. Of course I still dream of somehow still clinging onto my world.“Disappointing the Atalanta fans is what has most hurt me after the upset it caused my family. Atalanta for me is everything, it was ev-erything ... I know I disappointed them, betrayed them. I don’t ask for forgiveness, but just that they don’t cancel out all the good things I did on the pitch.’’

Ivory Coast says Salomon Kalou’s left hamstring injury is not serious, although the Chelsea striker sat out Friday’s training at the African Cup of Nations.Team spokesman Eric Kakou said Kalou was undergoing further tests but would be available for Ivory Coast’s final Group B game against Angola.Tournament favorite Ivory Coast has already qualified for the quarterfi-nals, while Angola is in pole position to follow the Ivorians into the last eight.Angola needs a point on Monday to be certain of its progress. A draw would also ensure Ivory Coast finishes as group winner.Kalou pulled up with the hamstring problem with around 25 minutes to go of Thursday’s 2-0 win over Burkina Faso after scoring the opening goal.Ivory Coast played a practice match against a local Equatorial Guinea team on Friday to give playing time to a number of squad members who have seen little or no action in the tournament so far.Ivory Coast coach Francois Zahoui is expected to rotate his squad for the final group match. The likes of Didier Drogba and Cheick Tiote watched the practice match from the bench. The team was led by Galatasaray defender Emmanuel Eboue, who ac-knowledged the African Cup favorite had not yet hit top gear despite two opening wins“We are working very hard because this year we want to do our best to bring the cup back to our country,’’ Eboue said. “We just want to win. We don’t play very good (so far) but we always believe in ourselves.’’The practice match was played in a small municipal stadium in Malabo, on a bumpy pitch and with fans allowed in free to watch. A bustling mar-ket selling fruit, clothes, shoes and tournament souvenirs was doing good business until the team coach arrived under a police escort and attracted customers away from the stalls. It’s a world away from big European stadiums featuring tight security and expensive entry tickets where most of the Ivory Coast players usually perform.“We know it’s very difficult to leave our clubs and come here to play but it’s for our country,’’ Eboue said. “It’s very different but we are happy to come out here to play for our country.’’

CSD Municipal won the Doble Clasico CentroAmericano trophy with a 2-0 victory over Co-municaciones at the Home Depot Center on Saturday night. The match between the Guatemala City archrivals who have split the last five Guatemalan league championships was very physical, with five yellow cards and two reds being issued by referee Ramon Hernandez.Municipal opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Brazilian forward Evandro Ferreira beat David Guerra with a hard shot from 30 yards out. Municipal doubled the lead in the 50th minute when Salvadorian international Eliseo Quintanilla fired a free kick that was pushed away by Guerra, but fell to Oscar Isaula, who scored on the rebound from close range.Comunicaciones’ roster was headlined by MLS all-time leading goal scorer Jeff Cunningham, who joined the club last week. The 35-year-old Cunningham created a number of chances during his 79 minutes. As the second half wore on, the game became increasingly chippy with both sides picking up red cards in the span of two minutes. In the 63rd minute, Municipal midfielder Jean Marquez was sent off for a hard challenge on Quintanilla. In the ensuing scrum after the foul, Municipal’s Claudio Albizuriz was also ejected from the match.Comunicaciones attempted to cut the lead in half with considerable pressure late, but were repeatedly stopped by Municipal goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, who made a number of key saves.Municipal nearly added a third goal in stoppage time when second-half substitute forward Mario Rodriguez fired a shot that was cleared off the line by Comunicaciones Costa Rican defender Michael Umana. The match was headlined by MLS All-time leading goal scorer Jeff Cunningham, who recently joined Comunicaciones last week. Cun-ningham, 35, threatened to score several times and created several scoring chances in his 79 minutes of action. The game was the second in three days between the two Guatemala City archrivals. The teams met in a Guatemalan league match Wednesday in a considerably heated 2-0 Comunicaciones victory that was marred by 12 yellow cards, three red cards and a postgame brawl.

Mexican referee Marco Antonio “Chiq-uidracula” Rodriguez’s decision to show two yellow cards at once in a Tigres-San-tos match back in December might not have been the best idea. The Mexican Soccer Federation has sus-pended Rodriguez for five games for his actions, according to Yahoo Sports.Mexican Soccer Federation secretary general Decio de Maria said in a state-ment: “The situation of having drawn two yellow cards at the same time is outside the role, not something that is considered in the arbitration rules and is considered as if he had not responded to what happened and did not sanction it.”Referees are supposed to show one card at a time when disciplining two or more players. During the match, Rodriguez showed a total of seven yellow cards and three red cards. The Tigres won 4-1 and celebrated their first Mexico Primera Division Apertura title in 29 years.

Mourinho eyes return to England

Soccer Referee Receives Five-GameBan For Showboating

Jose Mourinho has decided to quit his role as manager of Spanish giant Real Madrid at the end of the current campaign with a view to returning to the English Premier League next season, The (London) Sunday Times reported, citing sources. The Portuguese has reportedly grown disillusioned with life in the Spanish capital, with suggestions he is being undermined from within the club despite Real leading La Liga by seven points and comfortably qualifying for the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

“He’s decided to come back to England and he will go in the summer,” a friend of Mourinho is quoted as saying in the report. There are no vacancies at the top teams in England, but he is expected to be linked with any one of Manchester United, Manchester City, Liv-erpool and even Chelsea, where he left in 2007 after a falling out with Roman Abramovich.Mourinho has reportedly buried his differences with Abramovich, and Chelsea manager Andres Villas-Boas has come under intense pressure, with the London club sitting 13 points behind leader Manchester City.Mourinho had great success at Chelsea, winning the EPL title in 2005 and 2006.He is also expected to be linked with Tottenham, with its manager Harry Redknapp favorite to succeed Fabio Capello as England coach later this year.

Xavi:Madrid’s players ‘bad losers,’ ‘animals’

Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez has labeled Real Madrid’s players bad losers and animals after his club won their latest ill-tempered matchup.Barcelona eliminated cup holder Real Madrid from the Copa del Rey quarterfinals with Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at the Camp Nou.El Mundo newspaper’s website released Barca TV footage on Friday of Xavi caught off camera speaking about the game.“In the changing room, they were (complaining). They’re unbelievable - they don’t know how to lose,’’ the

Spain midfielder said.Xavi’s comments will do little to calm the tense rivalry as he also labeled Madrid players “animals’’ for their physical challenges, spe-cifically Lassana Diarra after the Madrid midfielder escaped a second booking in the closing moments of the first half.“I said to him, you just showed (Lionel) Messi a yellow card and now the second one, what happened to it? Send him off,’’ Xavi said he told referee Fernando Teixeira, adding: “It’s the player who is responsible, especially if you challenge like an animal.’’Madrid ended the match with 10 men after Sergio Ramos was sent off in the 88th minute, and Madrid was vocal in its criticism of Teix-eira.Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka, speaking instead of coach Jose Mourinho as he often does, responded to Xavi’s statements on Friday.“Of course Real Madrid knows how to accept losing, but not in that manner,’’ Karanka said.Mourinho criticized Teixeira in the postgame news conference and reportedly waited for the referee after the game to voice his opinion.“Teixeira, you’ll go and smoke a cigar now and laugh without feeling any bit of shame,’’ El Mundo Deportivo newspaper quoted Mourinho as saying to Texeira, publishing a photo of the coach in the Camp Nou car park.Karanka offered a qualified defense of Mourinho.“Everyone knows our coach has a certain way of being, and there are times when he is OK and others when he’s not,’’ Karanka said. While Madrid played perhaps its best match against Barcelona since Mourinho’s arrival in 2010, the team has lost nine times and won only once in the last 14matches against its fiercest rival. Madrid leads the Spanish league by five points at the halfway point of the sea-son, with three-time defending champion Barcelona in second spot.
