Annual General Meeting
Pat Moloney and Gail Jones are not standing for re-election as President and Secre-
tary at the AGM. They consider they have been there long enough and it is time
for someone else to take over the positions and bring in some new thoughts and
ideas into the Committee. Further information can be obtained from Gail. Pat is
currently away on holidays and returning mid-August.

At the time of writing this report the
weather has been perfect for playing
tennis. Anzac Day has come and gone
and it has not turned cold. Maybe there
is climate change! Hopefully we should
be taking advantage of the fine weather
to continue our enjoyment of tennis.
In the last three months our main com-
petition has been the Easter Tourna-
ment, the completion of the popular
Twilight competition and the monthly
Sunday Round Robins. The results and
reports for these competitions are de-
tailed elsewhere in this edition of Vet-
set.
On 15 April we hosted a group of 13
New Zealand tennis players. These
were part of a tennis group who tour
and play tennis in different parts of
Australia each year. This year one of
their stopovers was Canberra. It was a
pleasant social day and I would like to
thank Barbara McCluskey and Gail
Jones for organising the day. Also the
players who came along and played.
That night was a dinner at the South-
ern Cross Club Jamison and the fol-
lowing day a tour of Canberra. All in
all a successful tennis relations gath-
ering.
From 19-24 June TSACT will have
two players competing in the World
Seniors Teams Championships in
Helsinki in Australian teams. TSACT
congratulates Narelle Raftery (W50
Maria Bueno Cup) and Ros Balodis
(W55 Maureen Connelly Cup) on se-
lection in those teams. We wish them
both good luck.
Sadly over the last three months we
have lost five members. All of these
members contributed in their own
PRESIDENT’S REPORT by Pat Moloney
Each year the Tennis ACT Mid Week
Ladies hold a Charity Day Tournament
to raise funds for a nominated charity.
This year it was held on Thursday 5
May for Alzheimer’s Australia ACT.
Barbara McCluskey and Anne Haycock
had finally handed over the reins to
Helen Greenup and her team although
both were there to assist and make sure
things ran smoothly.
More on Alzheimer’s Australia ACT
and dementia can be found on page 2 .
The ladies appear to be able to pick
their days. It was another perfect au-
tumn’s day – sunny and little wind. 53
players, a little lower than previous
years, supported the tournament playing
either ladies, mens or mixed doubles in
a round robin format at Belconnen and
Melba Tennis Clubs. These clubs do-
nated their courts for the morning.
TSACT donated the balls.
Afterwards all the players gathered at
Belconnen Tennis Club for a sausage
sizzle accompanied by a variety of sal-
ads provided by the ladies and washed
down with a glass of wine donated by
Lamberts Vineyards in Wamboin.
Thanks go to the Hawker Butchery for a
very good rate on the sausages and to
Michael Wootton, the Office Manager
at Alzheimer’s Australia ACT for vol-
unteering to cook 140 sausages.
Money was also raised through a raffle
with prizes donated by Alzheimer’s
Alzheimer’s Australia
ACT and Dementia
Alzheimer’s Australia ACT provides
information, advice, support, advocacy
and education for the thousands of Can-
berrans, their families and carers living
with dementia. Their vision is commit-
ted to the prevention of dementia while
valuing and supporting people living
with dementia.
Dementia is the term used to describe
the symptoms of a large group of ill-
nesses which cause a progressive de-
cline in a person’s functioning. It is a
broad term used to describe a loss of
memory, intellect, rationality, social
skills and physical functioning. There
are many types of dementia including
Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia,
fronto temporal dementia and dementia
with Lewy Bodies. Dementia can hap-
pen to anybody but is more common
after the age of 65.
There are more than 353,800 Austra-
lians living with dementia. Without a
medical breakthrough, the number of
people with dementia is expected to
increase to 400,000 in less than 5 years
and to be almost 900,000 by 2050. De-
mentia is the second leading cause of
death in Australia and there is no cure.
On average symptoms of dementia are
noticed by families three years before a
firm diagnosis is made.
Researchers are currently investigating
a number of aspects of (cont on page 5)
Australia ACT (a patchwork quilt),
Hesta (a coffee maker), Thelma Win-
roe (a silk scarf), Janet Bruce (a bottle
of wine and a voucher from Ricardos
in Jamieson), Lambert’s Vineyards (2
dozen bottles of wine), Merrin Hunter
(framed calligraphy), Ainslie Football
Club ($100 dollars in meal vouchers)
and Lyn Robbins (a bottle of wine).
The winner on the day was Alz-
heimer’s Australia ACT with $1670
being handed over to them. This was
the second year in a row that the la-
dies have raised at least $1600 for a
charity. Well done ladies. A late
donation from Weston Creek Tennis
Club has brought the total to $1935.
Back to the tennis, the winners were
Mixed Doubles Group A (Belc) –
Linda Valente/Neville Rodwell
Mixed Doubles Group B (Belc) –
Lynette Sebbens/Don Masters
Ladies Doubles (Melba) – Maureen
Lancaster/Robyn Bailey
Ladies Doubles Group A (Belc) –
Merrin Hunter/Sandra Roughton
Ladies Doubles Group B (Belc) –
Hilary Harris/Wendy Whitten-Trunz
Mens Doubles (Melba) – Anthony
Connell/Bill Scott.
The major prize winners in the raffle
were Karenn Layne (the patchwork
quilt) and Di Alford (coffee maker).

way to supporting and helping Tennis
Seniors ACT. One I would like to ac-
knowledge is Mick Doyle for the con-
tributions he made to TSACT and the
assistance in the re-establishment of the
Easter Championships. Tributes to
these members can be found on pages 4
and 5.
Finally I would also like to remind
members our AGM will be held on
Wednesday 7 September at 6:00pm at a
venue to be decided. All positions are
declared vacant so if anyone is inter-
ested in coming onto the committee fur-
ther information can be obtained from
Gail Jones (I will be on holidays). Even
if you don’t want to be on the commit-
tee come along and get a first hand ac-
count of the year and ask questions of
the committee.
Happy tennising.

A new and dedicated website
now gives you all the informa-
tion and updates you need ,
The Organising Committee of
SA17 under the Chairmanship
of Ron Russo has been hard at
work to ensure that they de-
liver another great event in
January. This includes devel-
oping a dedicated website that
gives you the opportunity to
direct queries to them, and also
provides updated information

Nominations for ACT teams will be
called for later in the year. However if
you are interested you should be plan-

rates offered to Graham Smith at the
Chifley on South Terrace, check out the
new website. It has some suggestions.
2016 World Young Seniors Teams and Individual Championships,
The 2016 World Young Seniors Teams
and Individual Championships were
held in Umag in Croatia from 1-14
May. Young Seniors include the 35, 40
and 45 age groups.
In the Teams event held in the first
week, there were 106 teams from 30
countries competing. The Cups were
shared between three European coun-
tries. The Netherlands won the M35
Italia Cup, the M45 Dubler Cup and the
W35 Suzanne Lenglen Cup. Spain won
the W40 Young Cup and W45 Margaret
Court Cup and France won the M40
Tony Trabert Cup.
Australia had teams in the three mens
Cups and a ladies team in the W45.
The teams finished 17th in the M35
Italia Cup, 9th in the M40 Trabert Cup
and the M45 Dubler Cup and 11th in the
W45 Court Cup.
In the Individual events held in the sec-
ond week Australian players had little
success. Kerryn Cyprjen (Qld) reached
the semi-finals of the W45 singles and
the 45 Mixed Doubles with Terry Deeth
(Qld/Ger). Wendy Armstrong (NSW)
reached the semi-final of the W45 Dou-
bles playing with Barbara Seeger from
Germany.
The following article is extracted from
a news item on the ITF Seniors website
‘Umag centrepiece the star of the
Young Seniors show’ written by Clive
White
But the real star of the show here has
always been the venue itself. The
ATP Stadium may not possess the
grandeur of Wimbledon’s Centre
Court, but in terms of small, simple
functional beauty it is without equal.
As it should for any architect worth
his salt, aesthetics came before money
in the late Marijan Videc’s design
because its undulating lines came at a
price: the loss of some 800 seats.
Slavko Rasberger, who was tourna-
ment director here for 20 years from
the stadium’s inception in 1990 at a
cost of 20 million euros, has never for
a moment regretted the loss of revenue.
Videc apparently took the inspiration
for his 3500-seater design from the old
grandstand court at Roland Garros and,
in the words of Rasberger, "made one
better idea".
Rasberger takes pride in the fact that
during the quarter of a century since the
inaugural Croatian Open only two
French Open champions have not
played at the ATP Stadium – Andres
Gomez and Andre Agassi. And in all
that time only two players have won the
title more than once - Thomas Muster,
who won it three times, and Carolos
Moya, who couldn’t seem to let go of
the trophy, winning it five times.

Five of our present and former mem-
bers passed away in the last three
months. These tributes have mainly
been drawn from editions of Vetset.
Michael Myles Doyle
9 August 1939 to 23 April 2016
Michael Doyle, or Mick to his tennis
friends, passed away peacefully on 22
April aged 76.
Mick first joined the
ACT Veterans in
1989 remaining a
member even after he
and his wife Anne
moved to Grenfell in
2008 after 27 years in
Canberra.
Mick joined the Ten-
nis ACT Seniors committee in 2000 and
was a member of the Grading Sub-
committee for several years until their
move to Grenfell.
He was Tournament Director for the
Easter Tournament for 8 years prior to
the move to Grenfell. He was still keen
on the job and returned for another
year. He was still seen around the tour-
nament after then as Anne continued to
work with Betty Smith at the 'Betty
Anne Banquet' catering for the players
at Easter until the tournament moved
back to Lyneham in 2014.
Mick played in ACT teams in the Aus-
tralian Teams Carnival commencing in
1991 in Newcastle as captain of a 50's
team with Charles Griffith and Peter
Johnston. He then played nearly every
year until the 2015 Carnival in Can-
berra when he was in a 75's team with
Robert Read, Norman Clements, Ralph
Peters, Colin Power and David Burke.
It was a tough week for this team as
they lost Ralph through injury in the
morning and Robert in the afternoon on
the first day.
Mick did taste success in 2012 in Perth
in a 70's team with David Coutts, Les
Tributes
Tanzer (Qld), Cedric Hubbert (Qld),
David Burke and Colin Power - photo
in the previous column left to right
with Mick first. This meant a lot to
Mick after many years of trying.
Mick also played in a number of the
Australian Individual Championships.
Prior to becoming Tournament Direc-
tor of the Easter Tournament, Mick
was a regular participant. He also
assisted in the organisation of the din-
ner dances at Easter. Over the years,
he supported the Twilight Pennants
and Thursday Tournaments as well as
being seen at a number of country
tournaments. He and Anne were also
regulars at our dinners.
Mick was always happy to provide
assistance when needed. When the
ACT hosted the Australian Tennis
Seniors Championships back in 2002
Mick had the responsibility for the
hiring and arrangement of the re-
quired number of courts for the
Championships.
As Pat Moloney said during the fu-
neral service, "Mick was a likeable
character, pleasant and relaxed but
could also call a spade a spade if he
thought it was needed. Mick was al-
ways an active supporter of seniors
tennis and could be relied upon when-
ever help and assistance was needed."
Brian Hurlston McKay
18 September 1934 to 3 April 2016
Brian McKay passed away on 3 April
aged 81 after a long illness. Brian
first joined the ACT Veterans in 1993.
He was only
awarded his
OBE in
2014 at the
80 th birth-
days lunch.
A t t h i s
l u n c h ,
R o b e r t
Hether ing-
ton com-
mented that "although Brian is blunt
and straight forward he is popular and
I've never heard anyone be critical of
him." Bob also went on to say "I ad-
mire Brian in that he never com-
plained about his physical trials that
must have frustrated such an active
and capable lover of sport."
Brian played in a number of ACT
teams in the Australian Teams Carni-
val. He first played in a 60s team in
Adelaide in 1994 with Peter Burden,
Fred Bennett, Matt Dwyer and Doug
Taylor. There was then a gap until
2001 when he played in another 60s
team in Hobart with Chris Norwood
and Jack Fahy.
His last Teams Carnival was in 2006 in
Christchurch in a combined 70s ACT/
Queensland team with Neil Hendy. Un-
fortunately deteriorating eyesight af-
fected the standard of his play in later
years.
Brian was a regular at our dinners with
his wife Heather. He was often seen at
country tournaments such as Merimbula
as well social tennis around Canberra.
Brian was also a very good squash
player.
Brian Ward
5 November 1942 to 17 March 2016
Brian Ward passed away on 17 March
aged 73. Brian first joined the ACT
Veterans in the mid 1980's with the last
record of his membership being 2011.
By this time Brian had developed de-
mentia and was unable to continue
playing.
Brian played in
twilight pen-
nants and a
number of ACT
teams in the
A u s t r a l i a n
Teams Carni-
val. His first
Carnival was in
Brisbane in
1989 in a 45 years team with Charles
Griffith, Col Power and Ray White.
Over the years he played in teams in
Newcastle (1991), Melbourne (1992),
Adelaide (1994, 2000), Canberra
(1995), Gold Coast (1997), Albury/
Wodonga (1999, 2008) and Perth
(2007).
His final Team Carnival was in Ade-
laide in 2009 in the 65's team with
David Coutts, Col Power, Pat Moloney,
David Sprott and Peter Breugelmans -
left to right below. (cont next page)
Page 5
Tributes (cont from page 4)
This team finally gave Brian success
winning against their ongoing rivals
WA. David Coutts, the team captain at
the time said I know that the win meant
a great deal to Brian and Cheryl, his
wife, as Brian was clearly failing at the
time.
James (Jim) Gunning
7 April 1918 to 11 March 2016
Jim Gunning passed away peacefully on
11 March aged 97. Jim was one of our
early members found on a membership
list in a 1980 edition of Vetset.
He remained a
member until the
late 1990's and
could still be seen
as one of the retired
players group at
Tomato and Mulled
Wine Days organ-
ised in connection
with Thursday Tournaments. Jim
played in the Thursday Tournaments
over the years as well as often being
seen with his wife Joan at the various
dinners. We understand that after he
retired in 1978 from the PMG (Telstra)
he was on the court 5 days a week.
He played in ACT teams in 1987 and
1995 when the Teams Carnival was
held in Canberra. The 1987 team was a
65s team with Harry Gibbs, Dan Gow-
ing and Gordon Handsaker. The 1995
team was a 75s with Ken Sharp, Frank
Kornfeld, Ron Thompson and Ron Wil-
kinson.
Jim was also a member of Turner
Tennis Club playing a number of
years of pennant tennis and was often
seen at the club with his family. He
was very much a family man and al-
ways put his family first.
Gwendolyne Grace Sankey (Weir)
15 May 1937 to 22 February 2016
Gwen Weir, as most of us knew her,
passed away on 22 February aged 78.
Gwen was an active playing member
joining in the early 1980s and playing
in her first Teams Carnival in 1982 in
Sydney. The weather was apparently
pretty hot with a report in the March
1982 Vetset that "....some of our la-
dies, to wit Bonnie and Gwen, were
seen bathing at Ramsgate attired in
full tennis gear apart from tracksuits."
Gwen went on to play for the ACT in
Teams Carnivals in New Zealand,
Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane,
Melbourne and Canberra. Her last
Carnival was in Canberra in 1995 in
the 55+(2) team with Jan Aubrey,
Jane Johnson, Kate Lorimer and Pam
Bycroft. Gwen later moved to Queen-
sland.
Gwen was also regularly seen in the
ACT Senior Resident and Easter
Championships as well as tourna-
ments outside the ACT such as the
Gold Coast, Mildura, Wollongong,
Gloucester and Grenfell. This was
when she was not playing pennant for
Red Hill.
Visitors from New Zealand
A group of 13 tennis players from the
South Island of New Zealand came to
Canberra arriving on Thursday 14 April
from Albury staying until Sunday 17
April. The group was on an organised
visit which started in Melbourne and
ended in Canberra.
A number of our members joined the
group for a day's social tennis on Friday
15 April on the clay courts at the Can-
berra Tennis Centre, Lyneham. The
day started at 10am with morning tea -
a mix of slices prepared by our slice
experts. This was followed by some
quite competitive sets of tennis with our
members mixing with the visitors. As a
bonus Nick Kyrgios and Lleyton Hewitt
were on hand practicing so players
could pick up a few tips.
Barbara McCluskey sweated over the
hot barbeque to cook up some sausages
and onion to go with the variety of sal-
ads brought along by our players for
lunch. Our President, Pat Moloney was
presented with a plaque as a memento
of the visit. Each NZ player and their
bus driver were given some mementos
of Canberra to take with them.
At this stage a number of our players
had appointments or were feeling a few
ache and pains and had to leave. How-
ever there was no stopping the NZ play-
ers who were back on the courts with a
handful of our members. They were
very complimentary of the clay courts.
On Friday night some of our members
joined the NZ visitors at the Southern
Cross Club at Jamieson for dinner.
Then on Saturday Pat with John
Greenup assisting took our visitors on a
guided tour of Canberra. Our President
was very impressive as a first time tour
guide. I think he missed his profession.
The visitors were due to fly out of Can-
berra Sunday lunchtime after visiting
the Australian War Memorial.
dementia. There is still much to learn
about the possible causes of dementia,
including Alzheimer's disease - the
most common form of dementia. De-
veloping better and more accurate
methods of diagnosis is an important
research focus. Currently there is no
single test that can accurately diagnose
dementia. Research into quality de-
mentia care and the best ways of sup-
porting carers provides important in-
sights into improving quality of life of
people with dementia, their families and
carers.
There is currently no medication that
modifies or slows the progression of
Alzheimer’s disease or other kinds of
dementia. Available medications may
reduce symptoms and improve quality
of life in some people, but they do not
stop the progress of the disease.
There is good evidence for dementia
risk reduction through changed life-
style and behaviours but the evidence
base needs to be further developed
and the interaction between lifestyle
and genetic factors better understood.

Australia ACT and the services they

How Embarassing
After having a nice meal at a Canberra
club you go and have a coffee with your
fellow committee members and part-
ners. Just as the coffee and desserts are
about to come your President is asked
to leave the club as he is dressed inap-
propriately.

ACT Seniors Championships (Easter) by Pat Moloney
The 46th ACT Open Seniors Tennis
Championship was successfully held
over the Easter weekend (25-28 March)
with four days of good weather. Friday
morning was a bit drizzly at the start
but soon fined up. Fortunately there
was no more rain for the tournament.
After last year’s successful tournament
where a number of highly ranked play-
ers attended, the ITF upgraded our
Easter Tournament to a Grade 2. This
may have resulted in the increase of
entries, particularly the men. The
higher grading means players receiving
more international ranking points.
This year was the second year the
Championships were held at Lyneham
as a claycourt championship. In con-
trast to last year when only one block of
the old clay courts had been converted
to the new Italian clay, this year the
second block had been converted.
The clay played well with one player
who plays internationally saying it was
the best clay courts he had played on.
The good clay courts should now be an
attraction for players to compete before
going overseas, in particular the Austra-
lian representatives.
The tournament attracted 165 entries,
35 more than last year. In the IPIN
events the field included 28 past and
present Australian representatives. Al-
though there were only 15 women 12 of
them were past and present Australian
team representatives and so provided
some strong and competitive tennis.
Entries for Easter over the last few
years have been adversely affected by
having the Oceania, World Seniors and
Young Seniors Championships around
or close to the date. However it seems
the higher grade and the good clay-
courts attracted the players this year.
Hopefully it will continue.
The tournament is essentially in two
groups – the IPIN group and the non-
IPIN group. The trend over the last few
years is that our local players tend to
play the non-IPIN events. The format
of the non-IPIN events has the advan-
tage of allowing the players to play
particular events on particular days.
In the IPIN events ACT players per-
formed well with winners being Neville
Rodwell – 65 singles and 65 doubles
with John Stark; Phil Higgs and Pat
Moloney – 70 doubles; Helen Hol-
combe – 60 doubles. Runner ups were
Phil Higgs – 70 singles; Colin Hol-
gate – 60 doubles; Tim Harris – 55
doubles; Helen Holcombe – 65
mixed; Narelle Raftery – 45 mixed.
The IPIN events provided some inter-
esting highlights. Of the 9 mens’ sin-
gles events 6 No1 seeds and 3 No 2
seeds won the events. The doubles
and mixed events provided many
good and close matches.
A number of players returned to de-
fend their titles won last year. Justin
Woodwood followed up last years’
mens’ 35 singles win by winning the
40 singles this year. The mens’ 70
singles had the same result as last year
with Ian Davis defeating Phil Higgs in
the final.
Isabelle Gemmel returned and won
the singles again this year (she obvi-
ously likes the clay). Isabelle also
won the mixed. The womens 60 sin-
gles was a very close round robin
event with Rosemary Davis winning
on a countback. Helen Worland also
retained her 65/70 singles title.
There were 14 non-IPIN events (11
last year). Nine of these events were
won by ACT players and five runner-
ups by ACT players. It's good to see
participation and success from ACT
players. All the tournament winners
and runners-up are listed on page 7.
An added attraction to this years’
tournament was the last three days of
a Women’s International Pro Tour
tournament. Our senior players were
entertained watching the girls play
their matches. There were plenty of
comments on how fit they were and
how hard they hit the balls.
ACT players did well in the raffle again
this year. First prize of the tennis rac-
quet went to Margaret Harrigan. Other
prize winners were David Green (tennis
bag), Terry McLean (gift voucher),
Narelle Raftery (wine), Linda Arm-
strong (wine), Gabby Triffitt (Easter
eggs) and Liz Kerr (wine).
We did well with sponsors and our
thanks for their generosity in donating
the prizes go to U&Co at Kaleen for
wine and gift voucher, Superbarn Ka-
leen for wine and Leisure Link for the
racquet and tennis bag.
On the Saturday night an informal din-
ner was held at the Southern Cross Club
Jamison where approximately 40 play-
ers and friends turned up and had an
enjoyable meal and evening.
Our thanks and gratitude are extended
to all those people who assisted us prior
to and during the Tournament. In par-
ticular Gail Jones who continues to do a
great job as Tournament Secretary in
accepting and recording entries and
assisting in the management of the tour-
nament.
Also to Anne Haycock who volunteered
to help and ended up putting in full
days chasing up players and directing
them to their courts, Barbara
McCluskey for successfully selling raf-
fle tickets, Graham Smith our barman
and Peter Breugelmans for obtaining
money from players. Mark Crawley
was our White Badge Referee (an ITF
requirement). Mark has been our refe-
ree for a few years now and does a very
good job in refereeing and administrat-
ing the tournament.
All in all another successful Easter
weekend.

Sunday Round Robins by Warren Muller Twilight Pennant
The finals of the 2015/16 Twilight Pen-
nant were played on 9 March between
teams Ainsworth and Hunt. In what
would be seen as an upset the second
placed Ainsworth proved too good for
Hunt on the night.
Team Ainsworth came out of the blocks
firing winning the first 4 sets. Cameron
Steele and Kerry Scarlett defeated Greg
George and Greg Hunt 6/2 6/2 while
Graeme and Leonie Ainsworth defeated
John Chaloner and Robert Pragt 6/3 6/2
After the changeover, Cameron and
Kerry won the first set from Robert and
John 6/4 to give them the match. On
the other court the two Gregs won their
first set from Graeme and Leonie 6/2.
As the weather was very hot and the
match had been decided all players re-
treated to the esky for drinks. Prizes
were presented with all players receiv-
ing either a wine glass engraved with
“Winner” or “Runner up”.
All players had a choice of a $25 food
voucher from U&Co Café at Kaleen
(provided by U&Co Cafe) or a 1.5 litre
bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon supplied
by Superbarn Express in Kaleen.
The final points score after round 10 are

commitment outside Canberra.
Maybe we will see him in May.
Again we welcomed some new play-
ers to the tournament, Rosa Cotta,
Don Masters and Richard Rowe.
The 14 players were divided into two
groups of 7 within the draw, with one
player having a bye from each group
at each round. So with only some
players having a bye, winners were
determined on averages of games won
in 4 or 5 sets.
Having taken second prize in March,
Anthony Johnston was determined to
go one better and took out the major
prize with an average of 5.6, slicing
through the opposition. Linda
Valente also backed up for a good
performance and sneaked into second
place with 5.0. Closely following her
were Alejandro Pacheco, May How-
ard and Bill Scott on 4.8. With one
less game Linda would have dropped
to 5th!
The next round robin was to be on 15
May on the artificial grass courts at
Lyneham. With no school holidays or
diplomatic tournaments to get in the
way, we thought we would improve
on the 14 in April tournament. The
big question was whether Colin’s
busy social calendar will let him
squeeze in a seniors round robin.
Unfortunately the tournament sched-
uled for 15 May had to be cancelled
due to lack of numbers.
The next tournament is scheduled for
19 June at the Belconnen Tennis
Club.

On a warm but windy morning 13 play-
ers gathered at Weston Creek on 20
March for a morning of tennis. There
could have been more but there were
two injury withdrawals in the last 24
hours (1 hamstring and 1 knee) and our
tournament unfortunately coincided
with the diplomatic tournament.
So while some of the regulars were
diplomatically absent, including co-
organiser Colin Lyons, the rest of us
had a great morning’s tennis. The wind
even dropped as the morning pro-
gressed. Welcome to first timer Helen
Nealer and to Don Fraser for only his
second appearance. Also Merle and
David Coutts played after some years’
absence.
With 13 players some had a bye, so the
winners were determined on averages
of games won in 4 or 5 sets. David
Coutts was the runaway winner on an
average of 6.4, followed by Anthony
Johnston on 5.2 in 2nd place and Linda
Valente 3rd on 4.8. Close behind, just
missing a prize, was Joanne Adams on
4.75.
Anthony Johnston told us he will be
heading to Magnetic Island for the win-
ter; I guess someone has to do it. He
made us jealous by describing this idyl-
lic location.
Despite it being the first weekend of the
school holidays, 14 enthusiastic players
returned to Weston Creek on 10 April
for a great morning of tennis in ideal
conditions.
Our co-organiser Colin Lyons was
again absent, but this time it was not for
a diplomatic tournament but a social

These Championships are arguably the
most prestigious seniors tennis event on
the Oceania calendar with ranking
points second only to the Grade A
World Seniors Championships. This
event was again hosted by Tennis Sen-
iors Australia. It was held from 11-14
March and based on the clay courts at
the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club in Mel-
bourne.
Now in its third year the tournament
was open to players from all countries.
The number of players entering rose to
265 from 230 in 2015 resulting in a
number of extra venues being used.
Five players from Canberra - Ros Ba-
lodis, Phil Higgs, Colin Holgate,
Neville Rodwell and John Stark -
played in the Championships. Ros
and Colin made the winning circle.
Ros won the 55 womens singles and
the 55 womens doubles with Leanne
Swaysland (NSW) but couldn't pull of
the triple crown losing the final of the
55 mixed doubles with James Coulson
(Vic). Colin had success in the 60
mixed doubles winning the title with
Sara Goddard (NSW).
Phil and his partner Don Biddle
(NSW) reached the final of the 70
mens doubles before losing to Hayden
Rees and Terry Smith from Victoria
in straight sets. John and Phil made
the quarter finals in the 65 and 70
mens singles.
2016 Jumbo Oceania Senior Regional Championships
A big contingent of Canberra players
converged on Narooma for the second
Seniors Doubles Tournament held on
12-13 March. The tournament was very
well organised and managed by Brian
Carmichael and a hardworking group of
men and women in the kitchen and in
the running of the tournament more
generally. I understand that numbers in
the mid 80’s were received.
It was particularly humid, even though
there was no rain over the weekend.
The tennis centre has a very attractive
setting with thickly vegetated hills lo-
cated close by. Quite a few visitors
took the opportunity to enjoy the brac-
ing surf between and after their events.
The water temperature had reportedly
dropped sharply in the last week but it
was still most refreshing. The clubs
and restaurants returned good trading
figures over the weekend from all the
tennis visitors.
A number of events were combined to
facilitate adequate numbers of pairs in
the respective events. The winners and
runners-up are shown below, with age
intervals given where known by the
writer.

West Wyalong Teams Betty Smith
The West Wyalong Teams Tournament
was held on the Canberra Day long
weekend this year (12-13 March) which
was a shame as it clashed with the
Narooma tournament.
Marilyn Walter and Betty Smith teamed
up with Gail Windsor (Bathurst) and
Pam Crawford (Tumut ) to form Team
Tumut. The team played in the Division
one section against teams from Colla-
roy, Goulburn and West Wyalong.
Valerie Gavin and Margie Sellwood
recruited Sue Willis and they headed
west hoping the organiser could find
them a fourth player. Lucky for them
the organiser’s wife Pat Woods was
thrilled to join their team - team photo
below. They had a great time playing
against Pat’s family and friends in the
West Wyalong teams.
Luck for this team continued scoring
the bye over the hot lunchtime session
on Saturday. Sue was too enthusiastic
to leave the courts and stayed to watch
the tennis but Valerie and Margie
thought they would retreat to some-
where air-conditioned as the tempera-
ture for the day was climbing to 37oC.
When we asked about the heat rule the
locals replied innocently that we should
just drink more water and stand near the
big fan that was blowing a mist of wa-
ter. That did help a little!. We man-
aged to get through the day and headed
back to the motel for a long soak in the
pool before heading out for dinner.
Conditions on Sunday were the same as
Saturday. The temperature steadily
climbed to 37oC again. The captain of
Team Tumut announced that they were
in a commanding lead and therefore
didn’t need to play the last match.
Other sun affected players quickly
agreed that play could cease and so at
2pm results were made official and Tu-
mut were declared the winners.
Meanwhile the ladies in Division 2 also
had a result with Valerie’s team being
in a commanding lead from Forbes and
the West Wyalong teams and so they
were able to come in out of the heat.
The weather was very hot but we man-
aged and had great tennis and as usual
caught up with friends and had a great
weekend away.

The Milton-Ulladulla 18th Annual Sen-
iors Tournament was played two weeks
later than in past years on 19-21 Febru-
ary to avoid the clash with the swim-
ming carnivals next door. It was great
just driving into the car park and find-
ing a place rather than parking in one of
the side streets. The later date did not
affect numbers with again a large con-
tingent of players from Canberra and
district heading down to the coast. The
large entry again resulted in entries
closing early and players missing out on
their events.
There was also a new Tournament Di-
rector, a very cheerful and bubbly Mary
Lou Barclay. Mary Lou did a great job
with some guidance from the very ex-
perienced Val Crook. It was pleasing to
see Val on the court for a change. Even
the weather did not dampen Mary Lou's
spirit. Again the hospitality and hard
work of the Ulladulla members and
volunteers should not be forgotten.
There was a range of weather over the
three days. Friday saw very hot and
humid conditions for the singles. A
number of players were unable to com-
plete their final sets due to heat related
problems. A change overnight brought
showery and cooler conditions for Sat-
urday. The ladies and mens doubles
started on time but players were playing
through the showers to complete events.
In the afternoon only three mixed dou-
bles events were completed before play
was washed out.
On Sunday players arrived at Ulladulla
courts to find volunteers working hard
with the super soppers. Play began two
hours late at 10am. Milton courts fared
a little better with play starting at
8.30am. The weather remained
mainly fine for the rest of the day.
However the afternoon mixed events
were cancelled as time was running
out.
Our members featured prominently
amongst the winners and runners up.
It was good to see players sharing the
winnings. A good example was
Wendy Taylor and Nancy Lane win-
ning the ladies 70 doubles from Jan
Aubrey and Pauline Honeyman with
the result being reversed the next day
in the ladies combined age 140 dou-
bles.

team fared well winning two of its first
3 matches before going into the play off
with the 3 other top teams in the divi-
sion. Tim found being tall on grass
courts is a disadvantage pulling up sore
all over after 3 days of getting down to
low and sometimes non bouncing balls.
However he has booked in for next year
- along with Monty who soon made
himself at home around the courts,
making many friends.
Don Masters again teamed up with
some old cronies to play for the 'Valley
Villains' in the 65-70+. He had a very
successful carnival with his team finish-
ing second after a count-back as the last
round was not completed.
The dates for 2017 are 20-22 May. Any
ACT players interested in making the
trip to Berri should contact John, Helen,
Pat or Gail as it would be good to have
teams from Canberra.
The Berri SA Seniors Teams Carnival
held from 14-16 May was in its 29th
year. There were 99 teams (95 in 2014
and 2015) and over 500 players a re-
markable consistency - they just can't
break the 100. There was an increase in
both womens and mens teams with the
women continuing to out number the
men - 53 to 46. Most of the players
were from South Australia. Victoria is
growing in numbers. Despite our Presi-
dent, Pat, flying off to Ireland the ACT
was well represented with 6 players.
Matches are played on natural grass at
four venues - Berri, Barmera, Loxton
and Renmark. All grades are catered
for with mens and ladies teams in either
an age group or the open event.
The weather for the three days is nor-
mally sunny with temperatures in the
low to mid twenties with some cloud
and little wind. This was the case for
the first two days. However the last
rounds on Monday afternoon were
disrupted by rain.
With the Greenups back from over-
seas, Helen captained the 'Happy
Wanderers' in the womens 65+ and
was joined by Gail Jones and Rosa
Cotta from Canberra, Pam Fabian
from Adelaide and Rena Alves from
Melbourne. They found adapting to
the grass this year 'challenging'.
Some of the courts were softer than
normal. They had some tight sets but
only managed one win overall.
John formed a 'Mixed Ages' team (or
a mixed up team as one member sug-
gested) with Tim Harris, George Pen-
ney from NSW/Victoria, Mike Hors-
man, our local contact, and Ron Habel
from Shepparton. The team ended up
in the 40, 45, 50+ division one, the
first group after the 'open' group. The
