Autumn has been called the “hectic beauty of death.” According to seasonal patterns of relationships in Facebook profiles, autumn is the time when more singles change their status to “In a Relationship” or “Engaged” than the yearly average. More breakups occur during the summertime. Autumn babies, or those born between September and November, are more likely to live to 100 than those who were born in other times of the year. According to NASA, autumn is “aurora season” because geomagnetic storms are about twice as frequent as the annual average during the fall. A study in the journal Perception noted that men think women are more attractive in the cooler season. One theory is that men’s testosterone levels rise during the fall. Another theory is the “contrast effect.” During the summer, men are frequently exposed to scantily clad women—but not so much in the autumn, which shifts “attractiveness criteria” in women’s favor in the fall. According to superstition, catching leaves in autumn brings good luck. Every leaf means a lucky month next year. During the fall, in response to colder temperatures and less light, leaves stop producing chlorophyll, the green pigment that helps capture sunlight to power photosynthesis. As the green fades, the leave’s other pigments shine through, such as orange and yellow carotenoids and vibrant red anthocyanin. Scientists believe global warming could affect autumn colors. As the world warms, leaves may delay changing their colors. Additionally, trees may not use their sugars to create red pigments; rather, they might send that fuel to growing new twigs. Global warming may also alter the habitats of trees, such as the sugar maple, which creates some of the most vibrant fall colors. Each fall, the black-capped chickadee’s tiny hippocampus enlarges by 30%, which enables it to remember where it collected seeds in different spots in trees and on the ground. Researchers found that during the cooler months of autumn, men are more likely to cozy up with their sweethearts and watch romantic comedies. Feeling cold activates a yearning for warmth and comfort with others. The autumnal equinox occurs on different dates each year, but usually falls on September 22 or 23. In 1931, the equinox fell on September 24 because the Gregorian calendar doesn’t always match up with the position of Earth in its orbit around the sun. The fall equinox won’t happen again on September 24 until 2303. The term “equinox” is from the Latin meaning “equal night. During the spring and summer, most people eat more carbs. However, they develop a tendency for fattier foods in the autumn, which leads to seasonal weight gain.

The End of a Labor Day Tradition (and a few fun facts)

When Labor Day first became a federal holiday back in 1894, it was meant to honor America’s blue-collar workers, who represented the millions who worked with their hands. Their skills varied by occupation, as did the amount of training and certification required.

Monday was selected to give workers a long weekend of relaxation. Public festivities varied from parades and formally planned picnics to speeches and recognitions of particularly worthy individuals.

With each decade, Labor Day traditions changed. It became a last chance to enjoy the end of summer, to get ready for opening day of school and to have family picnics. With televised football, the weekend traditions included the opening game of a favorite college or professional team.

Since 1956, another uniquely American tradition has included the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon, hosted by Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, who starred in several movies together and had a famous comedy tour. Dean sang. Jerry provided the humor. Soon, Jerry was named the MDA national chairman and hosted their fundraiser for 55 years.

In 1966, this not-to-miss, star-studded show became an all-night marathon, until it reached 21.5 hours in 2010, Lewis’ last year. Viewership dwindled.

This year, there will be no MDA telethon. It’s the end of another Labor Day tradition.

America’s labor force consists of 155 million people older than 16.

The average worker commutes for about 25 minutes.

Laborers in the 1800s often worked twelve hours a day, every day of the week.

The median worker’s wage in 2010 was $36,931 for women and $47, 715 for men.

The eight hour workday was established in 1916

Oregon was the first state to celebrate the holiday officially.

In other parts of the world, Labor Day or May Day celebrations are more political in nature.

September is Baby Safety Month It is important that infants are safe and that parents feel safe about the environment their baby is in. Parents, here are a few simple tips to help make sure that your baby is safe: 1. Check your car seat installation. One of the simplest ways to make sure baby is safe while you drive. Car seats are all slightly different and fit differently depending on your vehicle. Before bringing baby home, take your car and car seat to a local fire department for a free car seat check. 2. Avoid high surfaces. Even though newborns can't yet crawl, they are surprisingly wiggly. Avoid placing your newborn -- whether in or out of an infant carrier car seat or "bouncy" seat -- on a high surface. This includes the seat part of a shopping cart, which can cause serious injury if an infant carrier topples to the ground.

3. Watch your pets around baby. When bringing baby home for the first time, pay close attention to how your pet(s) react to baby. Never leave your baby and pet(s) unattended together. The Humane Society offers excellent tips on introducing a baby to pets. 4. Learn about babywearing safety. There are right and wrong ways to "wear" your baby in a carrier, and each carrier is different. Be sure you know how to safely wear your carrier (check out the brand's website for safety tips), and for general safety, check out the ABCs of babywearing safety from Babywearing International.

5. Know first aid procedures. Take an infant/child CPR and choking training class. 911 is always available, but knowing how to perform life-saving maneuvers should you need them will buy you crucial time.

6. Practice safe co-sleeping. If you choose to share your bed with baby, be sure to know the ways in which co-sleeping can be done safely. KellyMom (a breastfeeding website resource) shares an excellent round-up of tips and research on safe co-sleeping. 7. Bathe your baby safely. One of parents' top reported fears about newborns and babies is giving a bath safely. And rightfully so -- babies are slippery! But with a little knowledge and some practice, you'll quickly become a pro. The National Institutes of Health created an easy-to-read bath safety checklist.

Pro-Style Appliances for Everyman

Appliance makers are focusing on both style and price.

Kitchen remodeling is on the popular again and whether you have a lot to spend or a little, appliances are taking on a gourmet look.

Homeowners love professional-style appliances but these items have been out of reach for many people. Manufacturers are working to bring that visual style to them at a better price.

John Petrie, former president of the National Kitchen and Bath Association, says the average new kitchen is starting to look more like the set of a Food Network show. Quoted in USA Today, Petrie says pro-style designs, like heavier style handles on the appliances and bigger style knobs, are showing up in middle-class kitchens.

One of the mainstream brands is Frigidaire Professional, which has a whole suite of affordable, professional-inspired home appliances. On the inside, the appliances are similar to other Frigidaire products but on the outside the lines have been squared and knobs and handles are huskier.

For high-end homes, designers are offering built-in appliances that sit flush with cabinetry. Designers are starting to favor a minimalist look. They are offering thin, towel-bar handles and all flush-mounted products. Whirlpool's Jenn-Air brand has launched a series of built-in appliances that have a different look from pro-style products.

Dishwasher Dos and Don’ts

Sometimes it happens after you've loaded the dishwasher and pressed the start button. When you leave it, your beloved steals into the kitchen and rearranges everything.

While it should be a simple task, more than 40 percent of Americans said they fight over how to load the dishwasher, according to appliance maker Bosch. Maybe that's because it happens in the kitchen where it can be scrutinized, debated and redone.

Loading technique is now more important than ever. Energy-saving dishwashers use less water, which heightens tensions about how much pre-rinsing to do. Appliance and soap makers urge against pre-rinsing dishes, but some people insist on doing it anyway.

Lifestyle guru Martha Stewart offers these cautions:

"Never put knives, pewter, wood, china, crystal, cast iron, nonstick pans or gold-plate flatware in the dishwasher." And don't mix sterling or silver-plate software with stainless-steel because a reaction of both metals can harm them both.

To end the war over whether utensil handles should be up or down, General Electric is offering models with a third shallow shelf with tines that hold forks, knives, spoons and large utensils laid out horizontally instead of standing up in a basket below. They say:

"Protectors" want to load utensils with the handles up so the eating end isn't touched when unloading.

"Organizers" just want to load and unload everything as fast as possible.

"Curators" are particular. They place all the tall plates together even though they don't have to.

Many consumers load the dishwasher the same way they did as children, and 70 percent of users always use the "normal" cycle even though dishwashers have specialized settings.

Chicken Savoy Ingredients

1 (2 to 3 pound) whole chicken, cut into pieces

1/8 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1 cup chicken stock

1 clove garlic, crushed

1 teaspoon dried oregano

Salt and pepper to taste

¼ cup grated Romano cheese

3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

Directions

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C.)

Place chicken pieces in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Pour oil and stock over chicken and sprinkle with garlic. Season with

oregano, salt and pepper and top with cheese.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 to 60 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through and no longer pink inside.

Pour vinegar over chicken and serve.

Spicy Dessert Roll-Ups

Warm a skillet over medium-high heat.

Spray 1 side of a tortilla with cooking spray and

place, sprayed-side down, into skillet.

Sprinkle tortilla with 1 teaspoon cinnamon

sugar; cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon

cayenne pepper over cinnamon sugar layer.

Slide tortilla onto a plate and drizzle with 1

teaspoon honey.

Roll tortilla tightly and secure with a toothpick.

Repeat with remaining ingredients.
