Pre- Reading Activity

• Create what you think would be the “perfect”community

– Name it and give a physical description

– Devise rules and regulations – What kind of future growth does it have? – How do people spend their days? –

What role does memories of the past have? – What does our community need to meet their

standards?



The Giver

Jonas’s world is perfect. Everything is undercontrol. There is no war or fear or pain. There

are no choices. Every person is assigned a rolein the Community.When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to

receive special training from The Giver. The

Giver alone holds the memories of the true painand pleasure of life. Now it’s time for Jonas toreceive the truth. There is no turning back.

Writing Activity

• Describe something like you are seeingit for the very first time. Use your fivesenses to describe what you see, hear,feel, touch, and smell.

Research Activity

• Jonas’s Community talks a lot about Sameness. Inorder to achieve this, there had to be some form ofSurvival of the Fittest.

• Do a little bit of research to find out what Survival ofthe Fittest is.

– Do you think that this is what was used to create

Sameness? – Do you think that this would work in society today?

– What, if any, problems do you see with this thoughtplan?
