Feast of St. Matthew SEPTEMBER 21
We celebrate our parish patron, St. Matthew and the many blessings
we receive from heaven through his prayers for us.
September 20, 2020

Prayer to Saint Matthew
O glorious St. Matthew,
in your Gospel you portray Jesus
as the longed-for Messiah
and the new Moses.
Jesus fulfilled the Prophets
and founded a Church
of the New and Eternal Covenant
in His self-giving Love.
Obtain the grace for us today
to see Jesus living in His Church.
Help us to follow Him
every day of our lives on earth,
and then to live and share
His merciful teaching
so that we all may live with Him
in heaven forever.
Amen.

My dear family of St. Matthew!
Probably the most profound moment of Saint Matthew's life was the day
that one very special and amazing man, named Jesus of Nazareth whose reputation was already spreading throughout the region, looked at him and said, “Follow me!” .... Can you just imagine the shock in the heart of this hated man and traitor to his own blood and flesh and to his own people, collecting their taxes, their hard-earned money for a foreign oppressor? Can you imagine the surprise of those whom Jesus had
already called like Simon or James who perhaps looked at each other quizzically like what is Jesus thinking? Can you imagine the joy that leaped up in the heart of Saint Matthew, that rose up in his heart as he saw God's merciful Heart and His Beautiful Face calling him to conversion and repentance and to new life? Can you imagine?!
Then — probably immediately following this call — Matthew (also known as Levi) just couldn't contain the mercy he received in his own heart, and he invited the other friends of his who were considered his underlings,
the other, minor tax collectors in the region. As Matthew himself wrote (Matthew, chapter 9), while Jesus was at table in Matthew’s house, “many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples. 11The
Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12He heard this and said, “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. 13Go and learn the
meaning of the words, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”
Can you imagine this amazing sight?! Matthew’s friends — all thought to be sinners, rejects and rejected
by God — in that beautiful moment that Matthew records in his gospel where Jesus, after being confronted for consorting with sinners and tax collectors, experience a loving Jesus who says that not sacrifice, but mercy, it's not the healthy, but the sick who need a physician — that's why Jesus has come with His Merciful Heart… for you…
for me… for all of us!
And from that moment on then, Matthew got to live and walk and breathe and eat and rest in the merciful
Heart of Jesus! And then after that, to be called himself to witness to the world Who Jesus is: God's Mercy Incarnate!
In the Opening Prayer of the Mass of St. Matthew, we with the entire Church pray: O God, who with untold mercy were pleased to choose as an Apostle Saint Matthew, the tax collector, grant
that, sustained by his example and intercession, we may merit to hold firm in following you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever
and ever. Amen.
Jesus is on a Mission of Mercy from God! Listen to Mark’s testimony (Mk 3, 7-12):
“Jesus withdrew toward the sea with his disciples. A large number of people [followed] from Galilee and
from Judea. Hearing what he was doing, a large number of people came to him also from Jerusalem, from Idumea, from beyond the Jordan, and from the neighborhood of Tyre and Sidon. He told his disciples to
have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him. He had cured many and, as a result, those who had diseases were pressing upon him to touch him. And whenever unclean spirits saw
him they would fall down before him and shout, ‘You are the Son of God.’ He warned them sternly not to
make him known.”
Here we see the ongoing mission of merciful Jesus around Galilee attracting people from all over. Jesus was not looking for notoriety in some vain fashion to be known as a healer or miracle-worker, but to show those
signs as pointing to something even more important: life restored and renewed in God and in His Kingdom. That is the full and true Gospel: the really, really good news of this merciful Heart and beautiful work of our humble and meek Lord Jesus!
Let me conclude with this: as I write this today, it is “officially” Day Five of our St. Matthew novena
which you can find on our website, www.stmatthewchurch.org. Let me encourage you to start it even now if you haven’t already, and just read the dates for Day 1, Day 2, etc. On Day Five, whenever it works out for you, we read and meditate on the 5th Beatitude, which reads like this:

Greetings from CCW
Blood Drive for October Canceled —
Because of the VIRUS there are many requirements
and restrictions that we cannot meet. Please keep
your eyes and ears open for blood drives in other
places. There is always a need.
CCW Mass —
The CCW Mass usually scheduled for the first Sunday in
October has been postponed.
Thought for the Week — At the end of the
interview, the reporter said to the ninety-nine
year old man, “Sir, it was great talking to you. I
hope I can come back next year and interview
you on your one hundredth birthday.”
“I don’t see why not,” said the senior citizen.
“You seem in pretty good health.”
Jesus said, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7). Then follows the particular day’s prayer, which for this Day 5 goes like this: Dear Jesus, thank you for the mercy you have shown me time and time again, even when my actions have not merited it. Thank you for comforting me in times of sickness and trouble. Help me to look at everyone
I come across with a tender heart, truly feeling in my heart the pain and suffering of others. Help me to
always make the effort to ease the pain and suffering of others, with an ever ready, always affectionate, and joyful heart.
Saint Matthew, as an apostle, you were an extension of Jesus in the world. You got to see his kindness and
mercy displayed firsthand and then were asked to emulate it. Help me to emulate Jesus by demonstrating true kindness and mercy to others, just as Jesus did, and please intercede with Jesus in asking him to grant
my desperate request, (STATE REQUEST). Amen.
As the Opening Prayer of Mass proclaims so clearly: in St. Matthew we can recognize our loving God who comes towards us with untold mercy! Mercy is the most defining character and trait of God, and our patron Saint Matthew received that mercy, and shared it with his family and friends and us and the world! St. Matthew,
pray for us!
Blessings of shalom and joy and good health for all, especially our dear young people who seek the good things that lead to lasting happiness and meaning! In the living, loving, giving, caring and merciful Hearts of Jesus and Mary and Joseph, Fr. Gregor

Building and Grounds Committee
In August a parishioner asked to attend
the building and grounds committee
meeting. He had been looking at the
concrete apron at the main entrance of
the church and noticed it was cracked
and unsightly. He wanted to improve the
look of that area.
The parishioner said this would be a gift to
the parish.
The appearance and smooth surface at
the entrance was restored with a
polyurea coating which is 20% stronger
then epoxy.
The project was begun and completed
on September 15, 2020.
With thanks to Garage Force of
Naperville.
