SHARING GOD’S CONCERN‘The Lord is on His heavenly throne. He observes everyone on earth; His eyes examine them’

Psalm 11:4

Seeing allWhat do we see as we gaze out on this world, as we scan the headlines and watch the news? Do we see things from God’s perspective? Do we see His wonderful creation spoiled and marred by sin and greed? Do we see human beings, stamped with the divine image, suffering because of war, exploitation and poverty overseas?

Do we see lives devastated by flood, famine, earthquake and typhoon? Do we see all those who are unaware of God’s heart for them, but who still desperately need His love?

God sees it all, and He loves every one of us.And what does God see as ‘His eyes examine’ our lives?

What does He make of us? Does He see hearts and minds aflame with His love, nourished by Scripture and dedicated to serving poor people and advancing His Kingdom? Does He hear our cries for justice and mercy – for the healing and salvation of those in need?

As we sense His longing, revealed in the life, death and resurrection of His precious Son Jesus, may we enable others to respond to that love and accept His precious gift of new life. May God help us as we share the Good News with family and friends, and support those serving in remote, difficult and challenging areas.

Our latest Prayer Diary reveals areas of very real human need around the world, and shows the many ways in which ordinary people like us have heard God’s call to be active in a ministry of healing, care and evangelism.

The ministry of prayer is vitally important. As we set aside time each day to uphold the mission of MAF worldwide and that of the partners we serve, may God look favourably upon us and bless our prayers, lives and families, as we seek to bless others.

1 MARCH

SATURDAY 1 Give thanks for our ability to respond quickly to help people affected by natural disasters such as typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. Pray for Disaster Response and Security Manager John Woodberry, who is responsible for assessing MAF’s response in areas afflicted by earthquakes, cyclones and typhoons.

SUNDAY 2 Give thanks that MAF planes were able to evacuate our staff and those from partner organisations safely across South Sudan. Pray for the many thousands of people who are displaced following the conflict – many of whom are women and children.

MONDAY 3 Remember Juba Programme Manager Bastiaan de Waal and his wife Corina. Bastiaan asks us to pray for the protection of the Juba team during times of conflict and unrest.

TUESDAY 4 Praise God for the work of Christian Mission Aid, based in Jonglei State. They have four clinics which treat thousands of patients each month. Pilot Michael Dupuis flew a large freezer unit to Keew so that their medical team could store medicines at the correct temperature.

WEDNESDAY 5 In partnership with the Diocese of El Obeid, MAF has flown over 60 patients who have lost limbs because of bombs and mines, from South Sudan to Kampala, Uganda, for prosthetic surgery. Pray for these patients as they continue to receive treatment.

THURSDAY 6 Remember the Yida refugee camp where 70,000 people live crammed together in a ‘no man’s land’ without electricity. Many have papers from the North, but the authorities in Sudan will not allow them to return home.

FRIDAY 7 Pray for people in the area around Pibor who are affected by intertribal conflict, cattle raiding and military activity. Pray too for the poor quality airstrip in nearby Gumruk, which is subject to flooding. We use it to enable our partners to fly in relief supplies.

SATURDAY 8 Please pray a Facilities Manager will soon be recruited to serve in South Sudan.

2-8 MARCH

Serving in South SudanWe are still committed to serving this fragile nation, and look to God to bring His peace amid the ongoing instability and political unrest.

Lord, the people of South Sudan are crying out for help. Give them Your hope and healing at this difficult time.

SUNDAY 9 Give thanks for the hunger for God’s Word in the Tok Pisin language. Pray that MAF’s Technology Services will be able to supply Bibles to all those who ask for them across PNG.

MONDAY 10 Remember Doug and Jackie Wakeling. Doug is Human Resources Manager and uses his experience to care for our overseas staff. Jackie is also involved in pastoral care.

TUESDAY 11 We reopened our Kawito base in June 2012. Situated on the banks of a river and part of a huge wetland, there are no roads in or out. Our flights to the airstrip there are vital for the community. Remember the two MAF families who are based there.

WEDNESDAY 12 Uphold all our pilots in PNG who fly in challenging situations across this mountainous country. Without their skills and commitment, many communities, who have no other way of linking with the outside world, would remain isolated.

THURSDAY 13 Praise God for the opening of a new ward at Kompiam Hospital and thank Him for its ministry of hope and healing in this remote area. Our flights carry patients from rural villages to the hospital, as well as staff and vital supplies.

FRIDAY 14 Uphold Lukas and Mahela Schadegg who have joined MAF’s Christian Radio Missionary Fellowship (CRMF) in Goroka. CRMF staff receive calls for help. Pray that they will continue to respond quickly to calls from ill and injured people.

SATURDAY 15 Pray that the positions of both Quality Manager and Finance Manager will soon be filled in our busy PNG programme.

9-15 MARCH

Papua New Guinea (PNG) So many communities in PNG are inaccessible by road and rely mainly on our flights to link them with the wider world.

We praise You, Lord, for the variety of gifts members of our PNG team offer for the work of the Kingdom. Help them to use those gifts to glorify Your name.

SUNDAY 16 Give thanks for the work of Marsabit Children’s Home. We are privileged to support their work by flying personnel and supplies, and encouraging the staff and orphans there.

MONDAY 17 Pray for Pilot Steve Machell and his wife Katie, who is Communications Officer. They write, ‘Please pray for us as we keep on keeping on, especially for Steve’s continued safe flying and security duties, and Katie’s report writing.’

TUESDAY 18 MAF Pilot Christiaan Haak has transported 83 beehives for World Vision to help provide an alternative source of income and help prevent deforestation in Somaliland, which is an autonomous region of Somalia. Uphold the vital work of World Vision in this drought-stricken area.

WEDNESDAY 19 Pray for the security situation in Kenya. Many people are nervous, following the attack on the shopping centre in Nairobi last year, and with the influx of refugees from Somalia bringing instability to the north. Remember those ministering to the needs of the large refugee camp at Dadaab.

THURSDAY 20 Our Human Resources Manager Julie Nadin joined the Nairobi team in September 2013. She asks us to pray for wisdom as activities are planned, and that she will continue to settle into the role.

FRIDAY 21 IT Manager Lawrence Mbagara has been working hard to rebuild our flight booking system following a change of satellite provider in Juba. Pray for continued energy for Lawrence, giving thanks for his skills.

SATURDAY 22 Pray with us as we seek to recruit a Director of Maintenance for our programme in Nairobi, Kenya.

16-22 MARCH

Meeting needs in KenyaWe are helping our partners minister to the needs of people in Kenya and in neighbouring countries.

Lord Jesus, sometimes the task of sharing Your love with people in need seems overwhelming, but then we remember Your promise to be with us ‘until the end of time’.

WEDNESDAY 26 Please pray for Communications Officer Janelle Tyson as she gathers stories and interacts with our many partners. One of these is Friendship Bangladesh, a humanitarian organisation working to restore dignity to remote and marginalised communities.
