ENCATC > PROMOTING STUDENT MOBILITY PRAXIS is an information service for ENCATC members ONLY.

ENCATC is a nongovernamental organisation with operational associate status to UNESCO

Is 20% youth unemployment in the western world inevitable? Will generations of young workers be condemned to precarious work conditions in developed economies, or persistent poverty in the emerging ones? This doesn’t have to be the new reality. If we consider that just as the “knowledge economy” defined the 20th century, the “creative economy” will dominate the next. We must accept that in a world where traditional skills and labor will be outsourced and automated, logic will take us from a to b, but creativity will take us everywhere. The lure of visual culture is pervasive – fuelling phenomena like Facebook, Instagram, Vice Media and the like. But the state of culture-based education is in crisis. The arts are being carved out from curricula, at the very time... When creative industries are growing at a faster rate than the world economy. When the rate of joblessness in America’s creative sphere is half of what it is for other professions. When music, fashion and design in Britain, so brilliantly showcased at the Olympics, employs more people than its financial sector. To stimulate innovation, we must re-invent the way we study humanities. And to achieve that, museums must be put in the picture, not just in the frame, such as: 1. That creativity will be a survival skill of the future; 2. That the props and people within museums are essential resources for learning; and 3. That by embracing technology and forging innovative partnerships, museums will become the fiery muses that set the world’s innovation alight, and not the mausoleums where art just goes to die. You may already buy into the first idea, given widespread data from urban theorists like Richard Florida, confirming that culture brings economic benefit in very measur-able ways.

It’s not surprising that governments from Singapore to Sao Paolo are racing to “teach” innovation. China too has started championing this premise; recognizing that long-term, being cheapest may carry too high a price. But can innovation be imposed? Can creativity be taught in classrooms? Can economies built on perspiration shift to being fuelled by inspiration? This is where I see the vital role of the museum. For 2,000 years museums have held an exalted place in society, built on the belief that through objects, they tell the history of how humans shape the world – and have been shaped by it. In 2012, just over half of youth in the UK attended a museum or public gallery – that’s more than go to football matches. The same is true in France. But how can museums stay true to the educational premise on which they were conceived - in the face of tighter budgets and global recession? How can they teach record numbers of people philosophy, history, literature and art, in a way that leads to a greater understanding of the world? The answer lies in partnerships with entrepreneurs and industry to forge co-collaborative models and prototypes, like those emerging in the sciences and maths. The spiraling cost of education has driven universities and visionary educators to pioneer massive open online courses such as in the past 12 months, Udacity and Ed-X have been accessed by over a million students. And since its launch five years ago Khan Academy delivered over 200 million lessons. So why can’t the pillars of arts education be similarly reconstructed? The School of Creative Arts is offering five studentships in 2013: one award for an international student, one strategic scholarship and three DEL (Department of Employment and Learning) studentships which are available to national and EU applicants for the 2013-2014 academic years. Research in music, film, drama and sonic arts lies at the heart of the activities in the School of Creative Arts at Queen’s University Belfast. It informs teaching, guides the programming of events and seminars, and provides a context for many strategic activities within the School. The International Award will be allocated to the strongest candidate applying for postgraduate study in any area within the School. The Strategic Scholarship Award aims to set up an interactive digital archive, the Prisons Memory Archive, which collects 175 interviews from those who passed through Armagh Gaol and the Maze and Long Kesh Prison. In addition, there will be up to three additional studentships (DEL Studentships) available for research in any of the following areas: Sonic Arts (including creative practice in performance and

composition), Drama (including practice-based research), Film (including practice-based research) and Musicology and Instrumental Composition. The EAC Group (Ecoles d’Arts et de Culture) is launching its first Spring Session. Two weeks of courses in English and in French, totally devoted to Art History, Luxury and Gemmology. Combining “fashion”, “culture”, “gastronomy”, “literature” and “luxury” is the goal of this Spring Session. Intensive or “à la carte”, the course of study is completed by several visits: from the Louvre to the Musée d’Orsay through the jewellers of Place Vendôme. Taught in French or in English, the programme consists in an Art History module and a Gemmology module. The programme is completed by the French language and culture module. Art History module: From Romanticism to the beginnings of contemporary art

From the late 18th century to the major innovation of the early 20th century, this module explores the greatest art movements of the 1789-1918 period by studying in a multidisciplinary way the romanticism, realism, impressionism, symbolism and surrealism through the arts. The guided tours of Louvre, Musée Rodin, Petit- Palais, Opéra Garnier and the Georges Pompidou Centre are essential places to understand and admire the works that reveal the turmoil of their times and the basis of our modernity.

Gemmology module: The secrets behind jewels

Through observation, authentication and the study of stones and gems, it is possible discover the mysteries of gemmology. The module will focus on the origin of gemstones up to trade of jewels. Visits to famous jewellers’ houses of Place Vendôme, the mineralogical museum of Jussieu, workshops, galleries and museums will wonderfully complete this module

dedicated to the world of luxury.

Module in French language and culture The module “French language and culture“ is a “plus“ for international students to learn French, develop their language skills and acquire the vocabulary adapted to the cultural and artistic fields. Held over two weeks, this module is applied to the programme “Art, Luxury and Gemmology à la française” in order for the student to better understand what French culture and Parisian life are about. Almost every European country has its own cultural institute like the Goethe Institut (Germany), Instituto Cervantes (Spain), British Council (UK), Institute Francais (France), Finnland-Institut (Germany) Österreich Institut (Austria), etc. as well as several foundations and associations focusing on international cultural transfers. These institutes are very important for creating a European cultural network. Nonetheless, in this context it is very difficult to define what kind of national cultural understanding should be presented and what the precise differences within these European measurements to improve artistic exchanges are. Therefore the 4th Kufstein Summer School for Arts Management will focus on the question whether we have to reflect a conceivable end of national cultural identities to strengthen a special European approach or whether we have to reformulate the tasks of national cultural institutions and artistic projects to understand the value of national experiences, traditions and approaches in a new way. The Summer School will gather experts from European and non-European countries as well as artists, politicians, arts managers and students from different fields to discuss this topic on a

theoretical as well as practical level. An important feature of the Summer School will be workshops with active involvement of the participants. Target Groups of the Summer School are graduate students of arts management, cultural studies, event management, tourism management, political sciences and cultural heritage management. Interested students and professionals of other fields are also welcome. Every participant receives a certificate of attendance. The language adopted will be English. Also it is provided 490.00 € fee which includes conference fee, papers, accommodation (shared rooms), breakfast, dinner, travel costs during seminar, entrance fees (excl. travelling expenses for arrival and departure, optional excursions). Deadline for application is 31 March 2013. Fore more detailed information please contact Ms. Angela Scalet, Project Management Summer School, at [email protected] or consult the programme at h t t p : / / w w w . f h - k u f s t e i n . a c . a t /Veranstaltungen/4th-Kufstein-Summer-School-for-Arts-Management-2013

Are you interested in historic buildings and monuments? Are you passionate about monuments protection and conservation? A group of active students of Faculty of Mining Surveying and Environmental Engineering at AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków (Poland) is conducting a stocktaking of the historic buildings and structures in form of maps, sections and drafts, using modern measurement methods in order to prepare a documentation of those monuments, for their protection and conservation. In the past, students from AGH have already conducted successfully, in association with UNESCO, the stocktaking of buildings and structures listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including photogrammetric stocktaking of

the historic Mustansirija University in Baghdad, stocktaking of the Vera Cruz church in Segovia and of the historic battlement in Kotor in Yugoslavia (currently Montenegro). Today a group of students from the AGH University is looking for cooperation to replace the project, searching a high-class monument and conduct stocktaking of it. The activity plan provides that the field measurements will be carry out in the summer of 2013 and the laboratorial study in the autumn of 2013. If you are interested in this type of work in your country, please contact Szczepan Moskała The manager of the expedition, AGH University of Science and Technology at [email protected] or [email protected].

member institutions to our office in Brussels to learn how ENCATC develops and influences policies at the European and International level, creates networking opportunities for our members and their students, offers capacity building activities, strengthens the European Research Area, and helps to build knowledge societies. On 31 January in Brussels, ENCATC Secretary General, Giannalia Cogliandro Beyens met with 16 students studying cultural management at Utrecht School of the Arts in the Netherlands. The students were in Brussels to visit the major European Institutions and asked to meet with ENCATC to learn more about the network and how we engage with students.

Are you planning a visit to Brussels? Would you like to arrange to meet the ENCATC staff in Brussels? Please contact Elizabeth Darley, ENCATC’s Research and Communications Officer ([email protected]) if you are interested in setting up a meeting. We do our best to accommodate all demands.
