From the Office: The month of February will soon be over. What a cold month it has been! It looks like
March will be coming in like a lion. If that is true, it should go out like a lamb and
Spring will soon be here. Even though it has been so cold, we have tried to give our
students a lot of indoor physical exercise to get them moving. We have our daily “In
Motion Moment” where classes stop at 10:00 each day for a classroom body break.
Classes have been taking turns playing games in the gym at recess or walking the
halls with their Care Buddies to some lively music. Our noon intramural program is
also in full swing. When the K/1/2’s have their turn, they play cooperative games. For
the Gr. 4 – 6 students, the game is basketball.
Mrs. Morrison recently had some exciting news! On Wednesday, February 19, her baby
boy Declan Lawrence was born. We are all very excited to meet the cute little bundle.
For the rest of the school year, Miss Lori Sampson has taken over the teaching
assignment in the Grade 2 classroom. We warmly welcome Miss Sampson to our
Prairie View family. We know she will love it here.
Thank you so much to our School Community Council and parents for making the
Prairie View Staff feel so appreciated during Staff Appreciation Week, February 10 –
14th. We enjoyed the flowers, food treats and hot lunch that were prepared for us.
Thanks as well to all the parents who come to the school to volunteer their time in various
ways throughout the year. We feel so honored to work with you and your wonderful
children!

CLASSROOM HIGHLIGHT FROM 3Be:
Grade 3Be has been very busy since the Christmas break. We worked hard
with the other grade three class on our assembly for the end of January.
We learned a lot about responsibility and ways that we can act responsibly.
We are trying to remember and apply all of that learning now in our daily
lives.
We were excited in February to welcome the
Olympics, both the PVS Olympics and Sochi 2014.
As a class we watched several of our Olympians win
their medals or try their best to win medals. We
were proud Canadians as we watched all those
freestyle skiers clean up on the podium. When we
came back after the break we continued to share
and discuss Olympic moments. We also have tried to find out where in
Canada many of those medals will come home to.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION FOR 2014 - 2015
We are continuing to update our list of Kindergarten children for the
upcoming school year. If you have a child who will be 5 years of age on or
before December 31, 2014, please contact the school and register them for
the 2014-2015 school year. This is important information for planning
programs, budgeting and staffing for the upcoming year. Parents will be
contacted in the Spring regarding our Kindergarten Orientation Day.
If you know of friends or neighbours who have Kindergarten age children,
please share this information with them.
SCHOOL COMMUNITY COUNCIL WORKSHOP
March 20th @ 6:30 p.m.
All kindergarten children are screened early in the school year to identify
speech, language, vision, and fine motor ability. Every year, a number of
students are identified who require remedial intervention especially in fine
motor as well as speech and language
On March 20th at 6:30 p.m. in the school library, Prairie View School
Community Council will host a workshop led by our kindergarten teacher,
Mrs. Boyko; speech and language pathologist, Kari Schmiedge; and our
occupational therapist, Aaron Bates. Parents will be able to ask questions
and discover ways to prepare their children for a successful kindergarten
experience. We believe parents would be able to prepare their children
more effectively if they accessed knowledge earlier in the school year.
Our hope is that we will be able to reach parents who have
children attending kindergarten next year or in the near
future. Letters with further information will be mailed
to 2014-15 Kindergarten families next week. Please call
the school if you have any questions.
REPORT CARDS AND PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES
Report card time is here again! Grades 1 – 6 progress reports will be
coming home Friday, March 14th. Parent-teacher-student interviews will
be held on Wednesday, March 26th and Thursday, March 27th from
3:30 – 6:30 p.m. If parents wish to book an interview time, please call the
school before March 14th to book your appointment.
Kindergarten reports were sent home on February 12th and 13th.
Conferences will be March 26th and March 27th as well.
BREAKFAST WITH A BOOK
Breakfast with a Book was once again a HUGE success. All
but 29 students showed up for a muffin and a great story. I
saw some really cool pajamas along with some very special
stuffies and blankets. A big thank-you to all the students
and parents who made a special effort to get up early to
have breakfast with me.
Reading is a marvellous adventure. I hope you will continue to keep the
adventure alive.

MATH CLUB
On Tuesdays during the months of January and February, Grade Two and Three
students met with Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Tew to play math games using cards and
dice. We learned several new games, many of which can be played at home. It
was a lot of fun playing games, while improving our math skills at the same time.
SCIENCE CLUB
How do rockets fly? How can you make coffee filter rainbows? What are
states of matter?
Starting on March 13th and continuing on
Thursdays until April 17th, Mrs. Fisher and Mrs.
Tew will be running a Science Club for Grade Two
students to discover the answers to these and
other questions. We will meet in the Art Room at
12:30 to conduct some experiments and have fun
learning more about the world of science.
PRAIRIE VIEW OLYMPICS
What a wonderful time we had on February 13th during our PVS Winter
Olympics. There was much laughter and friendly competition. It was fun to
watch the staff get into the competitive spirit as well. The activities ranged
from bobsledding on scooter boards (yes, there were a few upsets like
Canada 3), cross country skiing with boxes on our feet, curling with bean
bags, slalom skiing though hoops to biathlon running and target shooting. At
the end of the day we were VERY grateful to relax with a yummy cup of hot
chocolate and cookie. Thank-you to all the wonderful parents who donated
cookies for our event. We look forward to the Summer Olympics in 2 years.
GRADE 5/6 CURLING FUNSPIEL – MARCH 14, 2014
Prairie View Grade 5 & 6 students are pleased to be
able to participate in our Curling “Funspiel” on March 14,
2014. All students will be placed on teams for a fun day.
Parents are needed for this event to be happen. Please let
Kim Slobodian know if you are able to act as a game
supervisor or work in the concession for part of the day.
We are looking forward to a great day of fun and learning!
SRC NEWS
The SRC has had an incredibly busy month, and yet we do not have any concrete news to report! Our FUN-Raising week has been a GREAT SUCCESS! We know we
have kept everyone on their toes with five dress up days this week! We have been collecting money for
Telemiracle, and are excitedly waiting for the week to finish so we can find our grand total! We cannot wait to learn which classrooms raised the most money,
and which student names are going to be drawn in the raffle!
We have also collected many Fundraiser packages, and are awaiting the last few. If you have packages at home still
please send them into your
classroom teacher as soon as
possible. Orders brought in after
Monday March 3rd cannot be
accepted.
Thank you for you continued efforts
with our fundraising goals. We will
be announcing the winners of the 15
gift cards, and the two classrooms
who will be treated to an ice cream sundae party as soon as we have our
tallying completed!
COUNSELLORS’S CORNER from Darcey Rathgeber Impulsivity
You can help your child make wiser the safer decisions by showing them how to
pause and think about their choices and possible consequences before they act.
Teaching your child how to wait will lead to a more personally effective, self-assertive, and less frustrated person. Research has shown that children who can learn to control their behavioral impulses are more likely to do better Aptitude test. Steps to Reducing Impulsivity.
1. Stop and Freeze before Acting. Play the game of stop and freeze by calling out “stop and freeze” at various times of the day. Once the child has stopped ask: What are you doing? Is it what you are supposed to be doing? What will the consequences be? This will teach your child to stop and think. Have fun and allow your child to call stop and freeze on you. You may have to provide a physical reminder to stop, such as firmly placing a hand on their shoulder. Continue to do so until the child learns to stop on their own. You may also want to use a stop sign or a red light to indicate the need to stop. These visual reminders can be placed are various places in the home to remind the child to slow down and think before they act.
2. Think about the Possible Consequences. The critical part of controlling impulses is teaching your child to think about the situation. Teach your child to quickly look around, see what is happening, and then ask them: Is this right or wrong? Is this a good idea?
Can someone get hurt? Is this safe? Could I get in trouble? You will need to remind the child of the questions to ask, repeating them at first. When they hear you asking them over and over they will be using them in their own head. This is how they will develop their own self-talk. These questions can be used with the freeze game. One critical decision-making rule: “If you are not comfortable, don’t do it.” Older kids can be taught to use their gut instinct: “If you feel it isn’t right, is unsafe, or you could be in trouble, chances are you will.”
3. Teach How to Act Right. Responsible kids not only think before they act but also accept
whatever happens – without making excuses, blaming others, or being irrational - even if the outcome turns out to be not safe or wise. All people will make an unwise decision, which is a part of life. If your child makes an unwise decision, use it as an opportunity to help them think through what they did wrong so they can make a better choice the next time. Ask them, what did you want to happen? What happened instead? At what point did you think it would turn out alright? Did you think about saying no? What made you keep going? What could you do the next time so it won’t happen again?
What does your child do that you consider impulsive? How long has this been happening? Where are they happening? Why? With who? Is your child completely in control of their impulses? If you have any concerns, consult with a medical doctor. (No More Misbehavin’, Michelle Borba, 2003).
Rehearsals are underway!
The cast has been working very hard in preparation for the big production in May. Music rehearsals have completed and are now focusing on maintaining the strong voices of the cast while
choreography rehearsals have officially begun. Volunteers are now working on the costumes, the set design is being finalized, tickets have been designed and our crew has been selected. NEEDED: We are looking for adult volunteers to assist us with our stage construction that is scheduled to occur April 24-25 as well as any assistance for smaller set pieces. If you are interested in assisting us please contact Roxanne Bitner at Prairie View School or Scott Burant at [email protected]. We do have a musical website with the latest updates and news.
