Anintroductionto

TheonlinePracticeAssessmentRecordandEvaluation(PARE)systemhasbeendevelopedbythe team at University of Chester. It is a Health Education England NorthWest (HEENW)initiative that is being increasingly utilised by NorthWest Universities for pre-registrationhealthcaredegree courses as the systemof choice forbothpracticeplacementevaluationandforpracticeassessmentdocuments(PAD).Theintuitivedesignofthesystemallowsforsecureaccessandrecordingofinformationviaanyinternetenableddevice.InthelargemajorityofsituationsthedefaultforaccesstoPAREshouldbeacomputerwithinthedepartment–desktoporlaptop.AccesstothePAREtooliscontrolledbywhicheveroptionisavailableandappropriateacrossanorganisation.PAREcanbe accesses viahandheldmobiledevices i.e. tablet ormobilephone–windowsor apple;thereisguidanceforthislateroninthisguide.ThewebsiteusesindustryleadingtechnologytoensuresecureandsafedatahostedonaUKbasedserver.In addition to contributing to the assessment of students in practice, PARE offers theopportunity for online collaboration between the Higher Education Institutes (HEI) andPractice Placement Providers. This facilitates a rapid response to issues and fosters acommunityofpractice.PARE iseasy touseandsupportsall involved inpractice learning–students,mentors, educators and thewider team; thismeans thateveryonegets the verybestoutofthepracticelearningopportunity.PAREusesthesameprocessofpracticeassessmentasthepreviouspaperversions,so it iseasytofollowandfamiliartoallwhouseit.Thedetailofthedocumentisthesameasbeforeand has not been altered. The only difference is that the documents are now accessedonline.

GettingStarted–someusefulinformationformentorsIfyouareamentorandyourareatakesstudentsfromoneoftheHigherEducationInstitutes(HEI) inManchester,youshouldalreadyberegisteredwithinthePAREonlinesystem.YourPracticeEducationFacilitator(PEF)orteamLeaderwillhaveaddedyoutothesystem.Ifyouare unsure if you have been added to the system, please contact your PEF as soon aspossible.Afteryourprofilewasadded toPARE,youwillhave receivedanemail requesting thatyouactivate your PARE account. If you have not yet received an email requesting that youactivateyouraccount,pleaseinformyourPEForTeamLeaderknowandtheycanarrangefortheactivationemailtoberesenttoyouremailaccount.ItisimportantthatyouuseonlyyourtrustorNHS.netemailaddresstoregisteryouraccount.YouwillusethisemailaddressandyourregisteredpasswordtosignintoPARE.ItwouldbeusefultosavethePAREwebsitelinktofavouritesonyourwebbrowser.Afteryouhaveactivatedyouraccount,youwillbeabletologinforeachstudentwhenyouareallocatedtoyou.

MentorDashboardWhenyouhaveloggedintoyouronlinePAREaccount,youwillseea‘dashboard’area.Hereyoucanaccessseveraldifferentitemsatonce.Youcanupdateyourprofileheree.g.mentorupdateattendance,telephonenumber,emailaddressetc.By clicking on notifications, you will be able to access any messages that have beenforwarded to youby the system.Youwill also receiveanemail tomakeyouawareof anynotifications e.g. assigned as a named mentor and reminders of the need to undertakedifferentelementsofeachstudentassessment.

StudentAllocationofMentor

ItisusualthatstudentswillbeallocatedtomentorsonthePAREsystembytheTeamLeaderor by the Education Lead for the area, in the same way that students were allocated amentorprior to the introductionofPARE,whenpaperbasedassessmentdocumentswereused.Whenallocated,thementorwillreceivenotificationviaemail.Atthispoint,youcanloginto the PARE system; here you can access the student name, placement area, PARdocumentandplacementdates.IfyouclickontheviewPARlink,youwillbetakentotheonlinePARforthestudent.

PracticeAssessmentRecord–OnlineDocumentation

Tofacilitateeaseofuse,thePracticeAssessmentRecordforstudentsfromTheUniversityofManchestermirrorsthepaperversionpreviouslyutilised.ThebenefitsofusingtheonlineversionofthePARistheeaseofaccessingdifferentelementsof thePAR.Rather thanhavingtogothroughthewholedocument to identify therelevantpages,thenecessarysectionscanbeeasilyidentifiedviathecontentspageorbyclickingonthenexttab.

Thecontentspageallowsyoutoclearlyidentifytherelevantsectionsthatyourequire.Itwillalso alert you to sections of the PAR that require completion via crosses and ticks in thecolumns.

Aswiththepaperdocument,youwillberequiredtocompletethechecklistofresponsibilitiesand inductionatthestartoftheplacement.Thiswillcomplementyour initialmeetingwiththestudent.Followingthisyouwillcompletethe initialmeetingwithmentorsectionalongwiththestudentandwillsigntoacknowledgethatthishasbeencompleted.FutureassessmentpointswiththestudentwillbeexactlyastheywouldwiththepaperPAR.Ifforanyreason,aperiodoftimegoesbywithoutcompletionofassessmentpoints(Initial,interimandfinal),anauto-notificationissenttoremindyouandthestudentsthatthisneedstobecompleted.Itisimportantthatallrelevantsectionsarecompletedappropriately.Once a section has been signed by the mentor, the student cannot make amendmentswithoutnotificationtothementor,PEForAA,asthesystemwillnotifyofanychangemade.Ifthementoragreeswiththechange,thiscanbesignedagain.Again,asyouwouldwiththepaperversion, if thereareconcernsaboutastudentmeetingtheirlearningoutcomesatthemid-pointinterviewanactionplanshouldbedocumentedinthePAR.

Atthefinalassessmentpoint,youwillbeexpectedtocompletetherequiredelementsofthePAR as with the paper version. This includes written feedback and identification of thelearningoutcomes.Onceeach section is completedensure that you clickon the signaturelinktocompletethedocument.
