Question: Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled mostly by people originally from England, by 1700 the regions had changed into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?

New England farming and agriculture was difficult. The short growing season was due to its long winters and cool spring. The soil in New England was extremely rocky and difficult to cultivate, or grow food. The Chesapeake region was rich in soil because of frequent flooding in the tidewater, which deposited silt throughout the area. The more moderate climate allowed for year-round farming, which made plantation farming possible. These differences in climate and soil led to major differences in economic development of the two regions.

Question: Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled mostly by people originally from England, by 1700 the regions had changed into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?

The men and women who colonized New England and the Chesapeake colonies had very different reasons for coming to the Americas and these reasons meant that the two areas would be very different. The Puritans came in search of a land where they could create their “city on a hill,” a place where their religious beliefs would not be challenged. Because of the success of the Puritans, the London Company founded Jamestown to grow tobacco to make money. After early difficulties, Jamestown grew, too. By 1700, the two societies were different because their founders made it so.

Question: Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled mostly by people originally from England, by 1700 the regions had changed into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?

The Puritan church was the most important church in New England, which led settlers to become very different from those of the Chesapeake region. John Winthrop wanted to form a “city on a hill” so the colony would be a good example to the Church of England. Puritans established congregational rule that led to town meetings and gave the New England colonists more control over politics. They also had state laws that reinforced religious teachings. This made New England different from the Chesapeake region because they were more religious.

Question: Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled mostly by people originally from England, by 1700 the regions had changed into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?

New England and the Chesapeake region developed differently because of the characteristics of the settlers. Families settled New England, whereas individuals settled the Chesapeake. The presence of women and children led New England to become more stable earlier. Chesapeake settlers lacked diverse economic skills; New England settlers had a variety of vocations. Puritans also had a sense of community before they came, while Chesapeake settlers did not.

Question: Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled mostly by people originally from England, by 1700 the regions had changed into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?

Leadership differences led to increased stability and conformity in New England and to instability and nonconformity in the Chesapeake region. Puritan leaders, like John Winthrop, were recognized and respected before they landed in Massachusetts Bay, promoting stability and trust. Dissidents like Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams were banished from the Colony. Church members were forced to toe the line by both peer pressure and blue laws, sacrificing individuality for stability. That stability allowed the New England colonies to collectively extinguish King Phillip’s (Metacom) threat. Conversely, the emerging leaders in the Chesapeake had to earn their respect, sometimes by enforcing harsh military discipline, like John Smith did in Jamestown. Later, the lack of respect for Governor Berkeley’s leadership led to evidence of instability, which was demonstrated by Bacon’s Rebellion. Thus, while weak leadership promoted dissent in Virginia, strong leadership allowed the New England colonies to thrive.
