Dear Students,

We warmly welcome you to Barcelona and IESE.

This is a short guide with some useful information for new students. This document was

created with the intention of making your move here as smooth as possible.

Once you arrive in Barcelona, you will probably deal with zillions of daily life things,

usually linked to administrative formalities that can be both discouraging and

exhausting. We hope this short list of steps to follow will help you to adjust to life in

Barcelona.

This guide is a living document subject to annual updates. With the aim of improving

and keeping the guide up to date, we welcome your feedback, comments and

suggestions.

Once you arrive…

There are several steps to be completed before the courses start. This document is

a guide of the processes you will have to follow.

Renting an apartment, opening a bank account, etc.

Getting registered at the city council (they will ask for a lease contract or

equivalent) → “empadronamiento”

Getting your NIE (Spanish ID card for foreigners)

Getting registered at the Spanish Public Health System: you will need your

registration at the city council and your NIE first

The PhD Office will need all this info (Registration Number at the Public Health

System, NIE, bank account number,…) so that you can have your fellowship paid

every month.

LOOKING FOR AN APARTMENT

This is a critical issue for new students. From the moment you apply for the Spanish visa,

you are requested to prove you have an accommodation in Barcelona. IESE cannot offer

you accommodation (there is not a students’ residence in our Campus), but can help

you find it.

You can start by checking the following websites:

Remember you will need a contract for more than 6 months to get registered in the City

Council.

CENSUS CERTIFICATE

One of the documents required for the NIE is the “empadronamiento”, the census

certificate proving your residence in Barcelona.

To get this document, you have to go to the Office of the City Council in your district.

You can find a list of City Council Offices in each district here:

The documents needed for the census certificate “empadronamiento” are:

Passport

Rent Contract for a period of 6 months minimum. If it is for a shorter period, it

should say that the contract is renewable.

If you are sharing an apartment, a letter from the owner/landlord/tenant of the

apartment saying that you are currently living there. You will need a photocopy

of this person’s ID card.

STEPS TO FOLLOW

To begin the NIE process the student must request an appointment with the

Subdelegate of the Spanish Government via the following link:

Important

You have a maximum of 30 days after entering the European Union to begin the

process of applying for the Student Resident Card (NIE).

The documents you will have to provide are those listed in page 9.

You will then be given a specific date and time to submit personally the documents

listed above at:

Necessary Documentation:

The original and photocopy of the EX-17 document which has been approved.

The certificate of “empadronamiento” (census form).

Three passport photographs (white background).

Original and photocopy of passport. It will be necessary to show the stamped

VISA granted by the Spanish Embassy.

As soon as you have submitted your documents at Rambla de Guipúscoa, 74 and they

have been successfully approved (they can approve them immediately), you can then

submit your fingerprints.

This is done at the same location.

Please remember:

In summer there are often long queues for this process and it may not be possible to

complete both Steps 1 & 2 on the same day. If this is the case, you can return the next

day to complete the process.

The receipt (white slip) given to you when you submitted your fingerprints.

The tax form, also given to you when fingerprints have been submitted. This

must be paid prior to collecting the NIE card.

Your Residency Card with your NIE number will be ready to collect 30 days after you

have submitted your fingerprints:

STEPS TO FOLLOW

To get your fellowship paid on a monthly basis it is necessary to get registered at the

Spanish Public Health System (Social Security). You will have to apply for your Social

Security Number, following these steps:

1. Fill in the form TA1 Asignación Número

2. Bring it duly signed to our office E-130: we will put the official stamp of IESE

3. Go to the Tesorería General de la Seguridad Social nearest to your home. You will

have to take with you:

CAUSA DE LA VARIACIÓN DE DATOS

PLAZO DE RESOLUCIÓN: El plazo máximo paradictar y notificar la resolución sobre la presentesolicitud será de cuarenta y cinco días contados a partirde la fecha de su entrada en el registro de la DirecciónProvincial de la Tesorería General de la SeguridadSocial o Administración de la Seguridad Socialcompetente para su tramitación. El plazo indicadopodrá ser suspendido cuando deba requerirse lasubsanación de deficiencias y la aportación dedocumentos y otros elementos de juicio necesarios,así como en el resto de los supuestos del art. 42.5 de laLey 30/1992, de 26 de noviembre de Régimen Jurídicode las Administraciones Públicas y del ProcedimientoAdministrativo Común. Transcurrido el citado plazo sinque recaiga resolución expresa, la solicitud podráentenderse estimada, lo que se comunica a efectos delo establecido en el artículo 42.4 de la Ley 30/1992.

La solicitud de afiliación, asignación de número de seguridad social yvariación de datos, cuyos datos figuran a continuación, no reúne losrequisitos establecidos por el artículo 70 de la Ley 30/1992, de 26 denoviembre, de Régimen Jurídico de las Administraciones Públicas y delProcedimiento Administrativo Común, y/o los establecidos en elReglamento General aprobado por Real Decreto 84/1996, de 26 deenero, por lo que no se puede dictar resolución expresa en el mismo actode la presentación de la solicitud.

De conformidad con lo establecido en el art. 71 de la Ley 30/1992, en unplazo de DIEZ DÍAS, el solicitante deberá subsanar la falta quese indica y/o acompañar los documentos que se relacionan.

Si no se subsanara la falta o no se entregasen los documentossolicitados, se le tendrá por desistido de su petición, dictándose lacorrespondiente resolución, notificándose a la Inspección de Trabajo ySeguridad Social a los efectos pertinentes.
