  • Princeton University PressIdentity Guidelines

  • To understand the function and value of the Princeton University Press identity, it is important to recognize

that every organization has a specific public identityan identity partly formed by the look of its printed

materials, stationery, website, etc. Each element of communication contributes to the overall impression people

    have of the organization.

When an organizations identification program is a coordinated one, it projects a unified character which works

effectively to reinforce all of its activities. In many cases, it also helps the organization to be more cost-effective in

its communication efforts by simplifying certain decision-making processes.

The purpose of this manual is to explain the components of the Princeton University Press visual identity program,

to define its graphic design standards, and to illustrate how these standards are applied.

Many of the standards depend on relative size, proportion, and position. These have been developed through

careful consideration of many factors, both functional and aesthetic. Adhering to the graphic design standards will

ensure continuity, a high standard of quality, and a clear, consistent identity for Princeton University Press.

  • Basic Elements

  • The Symbol

The linear P has been designed to provide abold, memorable mark to represent PrincetonUniversity Press in all forms of communication.

It replaces the abstract ionic capital previously in use. The mark can be read simply as an initialP, but upon closer observation can also be seenas two Ps and a U, to represent the full name ofthe Press. Proper use of the symbol, and how it iscombined with the Press name to form thePrinceton University Press logo, is described onthe following pages.

    4

  • Safety Area

When the symbol is used by itself, a safety areaaround the symbol will ensure visibility andimpact. As illustrated, the minimum safety zonemeasures 1/2 the width of the P symbol. Use thesafety area zone between the symbol and othergraphic elements such as type, images, and otherlogos to ensure it retains a strong presence wherever it appears. Where possible, allow evenmore space around the logo.

When the symbol and logotype are used together, the recommended safety area measures 1/4 of the width of the symbol. This allows the entirelogo to be larger within its given area. Please beaware that there are exceptions such as whenthe address line is is aligned with the bottom ofthe symbol.

  • Identification on Spines

Three lockups have been designed for use on thebook spines. The proportion of the P symbol tothe logotype ranges from small to large. A bolderlogotype is also used to retain readability at asmall size. Please use original art only, do not resetthe type or add a stroke.

Always place the logo .5" from the bottom of the book and leave at least 1/8". When the spine is 1/2 inch or less, use only the "P" symbolwithout the logotype.

The diagram below shows how the logo is centered on a book spine.

It is preferred that the logo be separated fromthe barcode, however, if space is limited the logo can be used above the barcode as shown. If a centered format is needed please use thecentered logo shown on the bottom. The logoshould always be used at 5/16" height (for horizontal versions), with the website set inGaramond Regular 8pt. For the centered versionthe logo is sized to be 1.5" wide.

BarcodeIf a dark or patterned background is used thebarcode needs to be placed within a white box. The box should always measure 1.5" wide and .6875" high. If a box is not needed the barcode should still be sized to fit within a 1.5" x .6875" space.

    Advance Book Information

The last twenty years have witnesseda revolution in macroeconomic modeling. Yet and integrated and accessible treatment of the new methods has been notebly lacking. Fabio Canovas book fills that gap magnificently. It is surely destined to be an indispensable reference for both students and researchers for years to come. Charles Bean, Bank of England

The last twenty years have witnessed tremendous advances in the mathematical, statistical, and computational tools available to applied macroeconomists. This rapidly evolving field has redefined how researchers test models and validate theories. Yet until now there has been no textbook that unites the latest methods and bridges the divide between theoretical and applied work. Fabio Canova brings together dynamic equilibrium theory, data analysis, and advanced econometric and computational methods to provide the first comprehensive set of techniques for use by academic economists as well as professional macroeconomists in banking and finance, industry, and government. This graduate-level textbook is for readers knowledgeable in modern macroeconomic theory, econometrics, and computational programming using RATS, MATLAB, or Gauss. Inevitably, a modern treatment of such a com- plex topic requires a quantitative perspective, a solid dynamic theory background, and the development of empirical and numerical methodswhich is where Canovas book differs from typical graduate text-books in macroeconom-ics and econometrics. Rather than list a series of estimators and their properties, Canova starts from a class of DSGE models, finds an approximate linear representation for the decision rules, and describes methods needed to estimate their parameters, examining their fit to the data. The book is complete with numerous examples and exercises.

Todays economic analysts need a strong foundation in both theory and application. Methods for Applied Macroeconomic Research offers the essential tools for the next generation of macroeconomists.

Fabio Canova is ICREA Research Professor at the University of Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona and Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London.

Fly Me to the MoonAn Insiders Guide to the New Science of Space Travel Edward Belbruno With a foreword by Neil deGrasse Tyson

Almost fifty years after the beginning of space flight, Belbrunos work offers a realistic beginning for minimum-fuel and maximum-payload trajectories for interplanetary operations. It is a mark of sophistication in the evolution of space travel that simplifed solutions to the vexing many-body problem are found to have practical applications. Belbrunos three-body solution for low-thrust minimum-fuel trajectories serves well not only the future of space flight but helps astronomy in understanding the sometimes erratic motions of celestial bodies. Edgar D. Mitchell, Apollo 14 astronaut

When a leaf falls on a windy day, it drifts and tumbles, tossed every which way on the breeze. This is chaos in action. In Fly Me to the Moon, Edward Belbruno shows how to harness the same principle for low-fuel space travelor, as he puts it, surfng the gravitational field. Part memoir, part scientific adventure story, Fly Me to the Moon givesa gripping insiders account of that mission and of Belbrunos personal struggles with the science establishment. Along the way, Belbruno introduces readers to recent breathtaking advances in American space exploration. He discusses ways to capture and redirect asteroids; presents new research on the origin of the Moon; weighs in on discoveries like 2003 UB313 (now named Eris), a dwarf planet detected in the far outer reaches of our solar systemand much more. Grounded in Belbrunos own rigorous theoretical research but written for a general audience, Fly Me to the Moon is for anybody who has ever felt moved by the spirit of discovery.

A translated selection from the epic five-volume Italian Il romanzo (20012003), The Novels two volumes are a unified multiauthored reference work, containing more than one hundred specially commissioned essays by leading contemporary critics from around the world. These essential volumes reveal the form in unprecedented depth and breadthas a great cultural, social, and human phenomenon that stretches from the ancient Greeks to today, where modernity itself is unimaginable without the genre.

It challenges the view that U.S. old-age policy was a result mainly of the Depression or farsighted bureaucrats by chronicling the Townsend Plan and the wider pension movements of the time that appealed for generous and universal senior citizens pensions.

Gathering the disparate knowledge systems of nearly two centuries into discrete categories, Kern produces a taxonomy of causality that is cogent and convincing. From Enlightenment positivism to quantum discontinuity; from religion to existentialism, and phrenology to cybernetics; from Freud to Nietzsche to Foucault, and from Darwin to Durkheim to Derrida: Kern ranges comfortably (and profitably) among them all.Peter Okun, American
