Romanticism
Romanticism• A literary, artistic and musical
movement of the first half of the 19th century
• It rejected the logic and rationalism of the Enlightenment
• Embraced emotions, color, candor, expression and heartfelt expression of sentiments
• Started in Germany with the Sturm und Drang movement
The Romantic Hero• The ideal of the movement
was man as a romantic, often doomed hero.
• Artists who expressed these ideals were social critics, geniuses, misunderstood in their time.
• They are individuals, rugged, set apart from the norm
• Lord Byron is a great figure of this time.
Sturm und Drang• “Sturm und Drang”, or
Storm and Stress, is a German play by Friedrich Klinger. The German romantic literary movement was named for this play.
• His childhood friend, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, became the leader of the movement.
The Sorrow of Young Werther
• Goethe’s most famous work, it is a story of a young man torn by a love he can never have who cannot live without true love and commits suicide.
• It is very melodramatic and full of romance and tortured souls.
German Romanticism• Also focuses on
themes or motifs that carry across many German state traditions, so it serves as a unifying force.
• Dark German Forests, Germanic myths, folklore and traditions are common source materials.
Music• It is best
demonstrated in music by Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, Berlioz, Chopin, and Verdi , the virtuoso of Paganini, and the mythos of these artists
England• In England, it is
exemplified by the poets, Shelley, Keats, Wordsworth, Coleridge and Byron
• It is also expressed in the gothic novels of the Bronte sisters, but most clearly in Frankenstein, and The Vampyre.
Art• The most famous
romantic painters are Eugene Delacroix, Francisco Goya, and Caspar David Friedrich
