Official rules for locating latrines in relation to houses and wells should be respected wherever possible:Any latrine always to be sited a distance far from the water sources at least 20 m away from itlatrines should be sited on the lower side of sloped ground as groundwater usually flows away from a wellThe privacy of the entrance is especially important as many people do not like to be seen entering a latrineSome guidelines recommend building a latrine about l0m from the house because of smell and flies An appropriate way to manage garbage at household level is to:Bury or burn household refuse: Every family should have a garbage pit where household refuse is buried or burned regularlyReduce quantity of refuse to be disposed: The amount of refuse that needs to be disposed at the household level can be reduced

Food hygiene:The food hygiene domain includes food handling, preparation, and consumption and storage practicesFood preparation areas also vary widely, especially in relation to socio-economic conditions. In one household, the kitchen will be an open space with a few pots and kitchen utensils, whereas in another we may find a fully equipped kitchenFood hygiene also includes the use of safe water for washing of vegetables and for preparing food. Thorough re-heating of the food is required if it has been left for more than two hours.

Safe drinking water:Water sources can be divided into the followingUnderground water: natural shallow wells, bore wellsSurface water: barked, ponds, Running water: streams, natural springs, riversSafe Water Sources for drinking, cooking and washing babies are water from hand pumps, taps and protected shallow wells. Deep bore well water is safe for drinking purposes.Unsafe water sources include water from unprotected open wells, ponds, rivers, barkers and dams. These sources are generally unsafe as they are prone to contamination by animals

IntroductionHOW TO PASS HEALTH MESSAGES TO CHILDREN on Health, Nut,

Hygiene and Sanitations:Passing health messages to children is almost like passing lesson to the children.

Student listen to some teachers while they don’t listen to other ones, for every teacher, positive characteristics of teacher should be met.

The Role of School Health in Education:Good health facilitates and enhances teaching and learning.Health and nutrition education values eventually translate to the general populace hence a national health and nutrition culture.Teachers are better placed to impart proper and accurate knowledge, attitudes and skills to learners on health matters than their peers or their parents.Teachers are educated and adequately skilled to facilitate simple health interventions such as deworming and vitamin A supplementation.Learners tend to have a lot of faith in and hold in high esteem their teachers and will therefore readily internalize health education messages from teachers. It is easier to sustain in adult life the knowledge, attitudes and skills learnt earlier in school as compared to obtaining the same later on from health practitioners.Schools provide grounds for more effective large scale desermination of Health and Nutrition messages as such messages tend to reach more recipients with minimal resources.Implementing School Health and Nutrition Programmes strengthens the capacity of the MOE and relevant stakeholders in providing quality education.

School Health PoliciesSchool health policies state what actions we will take to improve the overall health, hygiene and nutrition of the learners and especially those with diverse backgrounds and abilities. Ensuring that all learners are healthy and are able to learn is an essential part of a child – friendly school.Involving many partners including teachers, learners, parents, community leaders and social service providers is the best way to develop school health policies.Improving the health and nutrition of learners through school health and nutrition programmes is not new. Many schools have such programmes because they realize that children's ability to attain their full potential depends on good health and nutrition and a safe learning environment. Learners are also able to learn to their fullest when they feel the safest.Teachers should be sensitive to the nutritional and health status of all learners in order to give appropriate advice to parents and guardians. The process of formulating school health policies should involve the following:

Assembling a School Health team by creating a Community Health Advisory Committee.Building consensus Developing Sch Health Policies and advocacy messages.Communicating this to stakeholders with a view to building the needed support.

Five of the most important attitudes that need to be developed through skills – based education are:

.Self respect: I want to be clean, smart, fit and healthySelf esteem and self confidence: I know I can make a difference to the health of my family even though I am still a child.Respect for others: I need to listen to others, to respect them and their customs even when they are different or when I cannot agree with them.Concern for others: I want to do my best to help others become healthier, particularly those who are disadvantaged.Dealing with peer pressure is also central to effective School based health Education.
