    Definition of Quality Engineering

A discipline that deals with the analysis of

a manufacturing system at all stages, toimprove the quality of the productionprocess and of its output.

    Reduces variation in parts.

    Lower quality parts

    To improve business processes, Nissan

investigated production unit to improvethe efficiency of the energytransformation to the brake pad.

Based on success of Taguchisimplementation, Nissan's executivedecided that, they should apply Taguchis.

Using dynamic characteristics, Nissanimproves the efficiency of the energytransformation to the brake pad.

Overall weight of the brake system wasreduced and producing time was reduced

to 4% of the original time.Nissan technical centre conducts 70 projects

    annually, all using dynamiccharacteristics.

Kodaks copy machine manufacturingdivision was faced with improvingthe reliability of its paper feeder

The Robust Design method provideddrastic improvement in the methodfor evaluating the failure rate

compared to the traditional way offeeding tens of thousands ofsheets, which was very expensiveand time consuming. Instead ofobserving the failures, the teamobserved the time needed for a

sheet of paper to reach a sensorafter the feed command is issued.

The arrival time is affected by the noise factors

such as weight of the paper, smoothness,

humidity, etc. If the arrival time is outside the

design window, it causes feeding failure. Thus,

a design that reduces the variation of the

    arrival time causes fewer failures.

Measurement of arrival time needed newinstrumentation. But, the time for evaluating a

design reduced from weeks to about one hour.

Indeed, the Robust Design method uses a

measurement system focused on the main

    function instead of measuring defects.
