This month’s cover named ‘Living High’ created by Wayne Miller was the

January 2015 print of the month and high scoring image from the illustrative

category.

Wayne tells us, “Living High” is a composite of an old abandoned building

and the subject shot in my studio. I found the building (shot in HDR) in

Amargosa, Nevada on a road trip to Death Valley in 2014. The subject posed

for a theme that I had envisioned for over a year and I used my four light set up

for ease of extracting. Adding the props for the desired effect and the models

personality jelled the image.”

PPA’s Newest Addition: PhotoVisionIf you missed Imaging USA, you might

not have heard the news: PhotoVision is now a PPA membership benefit! What does this mean? It means that PPA photographers now have full access to PhotoVision’s monthly streaming at no additional cost. It now comes included with PPA membership!

around the world and I have embraced each of these chances to learn and discover next generation story-telling technologies. I’ve climbed to the top of the Empire State Building. I’ve directed a commercial for Nike with Kobe Bryant. I’ve flown for hundreds of hours in helicopters around the world photographing and filming the most beautiful places and landscapes. Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neill and Dennis Rodman have all fallen on me as I photographed them from the sidelines of games, and I’ve shot 4 NBA Finals, 5 Super Bowls, 8 World Series and 4 amazing Olympic Games. In the weeks following 9/11, I went to Pakistan as a staff photographer for The New York Times, and I’ve shot thousands of news assignments from terrorist attacks to

blackouts, portraits of heads of state and every imaginable disaster the world could offer up. I spent a month on the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the gulf, photographing my Top Gun dreams during the start of the second Gulf War.

I’ve directed 4 short films and numerous commercials to date and worked with thousands of people in the commercial and film industries, all of whom have taught me so much. Currently, I sit on the advisory boards of several tech start-ups and I’ve spent the last decade helping to launch cutting edge technologies that aid filmmakers and photographers. I’ve advised companies such as Apple, Adobe, Canon and Zeiss. Continued

Online submissions will still be $5 each (cash only please) for a maximum of three (3) images. DEADLINE for online entries will be 2 days, on the Tuesday before the meeting, by midnight.

Images submitted at the night of the meeting will be $10 each (cash only please) for a maximum of 3 images.

Entrants must be in line at the print registration table no later than 7:30 p.m., no exceptions.

Competitors must be present at the judging in order for their entries to be judged. If you submit online and miss the meeting your images will not be scored and will be rolled over to the next competition only. Without payment images will be not shown and judged.

Images are to be sent as attachments (not imbedded) to [email protected] with the image’s author in the subject line and the image title and category in the body of the email. Note: Digital album and video submission rules are coming soon. Please do NOT send video or digital album submissions to [email protected].

Your digital submission should be formatted as follows:

• As a .JPEG

• Adobe RGB 1998

• Longest dimension at 4000 pixels

• Resolution of 200 ppi

• There is no need to include any kind of matting or border as the system will include one if needed

• The submission should be named the title of the image

• If submissions are emailed, please use a separate email for EACH image, (SEE INSTRUCTIONS IN ABOVE ARTICLE) OR you can bring them to the competition table on a USB drive no later than 7:30 pm on the day of the meeting.

• Please make sure you are submitting your FINAL EDIT

• Even if you email your image beforehand you must still be present at the judging and pay your entry fee/s at the competition table for your images to be scored.

• It is not the responsibility of the Competition Committee to make sure your submissions comply with the rules.

• By entering an image in competition, the maker agrees to release to PPGBA the rights to use that image anywhere to promote the maker and PPGBA - including social media, the Bulletin, the website, or anywhere else deemed appropriate, without prior notification but with full credit to the image maker.

PPGBA’s image competitions are held at most monthly general meetings.

FAA Takes Important First Step for PPA MembersProfessional photographers received good news as

the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released new guidelines that would seem to pave the way for widespread legal use of small drones in the U.S. While the details are far from complete, the proposal would seem to open the door for professional photographers to use unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) as an additional offering for their clients. However, that door is not open just yet.

PPA has been working directly with the FAA and key Capitol Hill staff to bring about this very change - urging the FAA to loosen restrictions on some of the more basic uses for UAS, commonly referred to as drones. If approved, the newly released rules would allow legal use of unmanned aircraft by specific businesses including filmmakers, farmers, smokestack inspectors and some photographers.

“It is going to be a while before our members can start to use drones as a regular part of their work,” says PPA’s CEO David Trust. “But these new rules clearly reflect that the FAA was listening to our concerns, and we applaud them for taking this step sooner than later.”

There are many operational limitations in the proposed new regulations; however the four below are important to highlight:

1. Unmanned aircraft must weigh less than 55 lbs. (25 kg)

2. Visual line-of-sight (VLOS) only; the unmanned aircraft must remain within VLOS of the operator or visual observer

3. Small unmanned aircraft may not operate over any persons not directly involved in the operation.

4. Daylight-only operations (official sunrise to official 11 sunset, local time).

There are also several operator responsibilities to keep in mind:

1. Pass an initial aeronautical knowledge test at an FAA-approved knowledge testing center.

2. Be vetted by the Transportation Security Administration.

3. Obtain an unmanned aircraft operator certificate with a small UAS rating (like existing pilot airman certificates, never expires).12

4. Pass a recurrent aeronautical knowledge test every 24 months

“The proposed test has yet to be created,” says Trust. “Once it is, we’ll do all we can to help our members access the information and compile their applications.” Sources in Washington D.C. indicate that creating the test could take months.

And there could be even more positive news on the horizon for PPA members as the FAA has agreed to look at more relaxed regulations for micro-drones, a class of unmanned aircraft weighing less than 4.4 lbs. That is significant to photographers since many are already using these smaller drones outside of their business.

PPA will be back on Capitol Hill for more meetings on both unmanned aircraft and copyright issues. “As pleased as we are about the proposed rules for UAS, we might be even more pleased with the discussion about micro-drones,” says Trust. “I suspect they may even have more day-to-day application for our members. Hopefully we can find out more about those rules next week.”
