Building CSR strategies for companiesAnother meeting of the Academy

of Innovative Business was dedicated to Corporate Social Responsibil-ity. Katarzyna Radecka, Manager for Sustainable Development in Kompania Piwowarska SA, shared her experience during a lecture “Building CSR strategies for companies.” The theoretical part was supplemented with the workshop “Creating social reports”. The meeting was held on 14 March 2016.

During the lecture, participants had an opportunity to learn about process of implementing a CSR strat-egy by Kompania Piwowarska SA, and get to know how the company monitors the results of operations in the Polish market. Part of the lecture was devoted to the challenges of communicating CSR strategy both

to employees of the company and to the outside world, together with examples of the implementation.

The idea of social responsibility of universities (SRU) is understood as voluntarily adopted commitments to internal and external stakeholders. These commitments are the result of respecting international norms and rules of social responsibility organizations, in particular the Ten Principles of United Nation Global Compact, Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) and ISO 26000.

In accordance with the ISO 26000, the concept of social responsibility is recognized for all kinds of organiza-tion and is understood as a respon-sibility for impact of their actions on the external environment.

Through transparent and ethical operation, a socially responsible organization contributes to sustain-able development, including the health and welfare of society; takes into account the expectations of stakeholders (individuals or groups who are interested in decisions or activities of the organization); socially responsible actions are consistent with applicable law and consistent with international standards of conduct and integrated with the strategic objectives of the organization. The adoption of the program of social responsibility of university is a response to public expectations about the positive effects of the implementation of the mission attributed to universities - public service.

A PUEB doctoral student among the European Financial Congress 2016 Academy members.Business, science and media representatives and politicians will discuss the future of Polish and European Union’s economy during the European Financial Congress taking place in June. One of the participants will be Marcin Flotyński- a doctoral student of the Poznan University of Economics and Business.

An employee of the Department of Money Theory and Monetary Policy was elected member of the Academy of European Financial Congress. This initiative is aimed at young researchers and students from the European Union. Its goal is to incorporate people with outstanding scientific results, commitment and ingenuity into the debate. Participa-tion in the Academy is supposed

to activate and encourage young scientists to encroach on the path of professional development and in-spire them to take on career shaping challenges.

The European Financial Con-gress was first organized in 2011 as an initiative of the Institute for Market Economics. During the five previous editions more than 180 debates, dealing with, among

others safety of financial markets, value management of companies or sustainable infrastructure develop-ment took place. The Congress is also a place of discussion about solutions for the common success of Polish and European Union, and also allows for the presentation of the Polish point of view on inter-national development and security discussions.

INTERVIEW

Let’s start from the beginning - what is the Fura szczęścia project all about?

- Fura szczęścia is a charity project implemented by the fourth-year students of Communication in busi-ness within the subject of marketing communications. We choose entities from Poznan and organize a series of events during which we collect funds and materials to help chosen organizations.

How do you decide? There are so many organizations that need help.

- We do not have any specific criteria. One is location – the organization must be active in Poznań or the surrounding area. Until now, Fura Szczęścia has been focused mainly on helping children, so we search for units that deal with their problems.

Then, we discuss within the group, we do community interview, talk to people involved in the activities of these organizations, and check what their needs are. With this information, we vote and make a choice.

For whom will you be raising money this year?

- We have chosen a common room from the St. Jan Bosko parish. Ap-proximately 20-30 children spend their time there; in summer, this number goes up to 100. They are mostly children from difficult families. Some of them go there for help with their homework, but mostly, however, their parents’ work mode does not allow them to stay at home. Under the project, we called this common room the “Color stop.”

Who is involved in the organization of such project?

- There is no fixed group of organizers. Fourth-year students take care of the project for 3-4 months and then their share their experience with subse-quent groups.

What information did you receive from the previous group of organ-izers?

- These are mainly practical tips - who to talk to, what to look for and what to remember. Without this knowledge it would be difficult to carry out the campaign and develop it. Previous organizers also shared the base of sponsors and partners with us. This edition, however, is unique in its own way, because wrote my bachelor’s thesis about Fura szczęścia. My knowl-

edge of the project is so much greater. Perhaps this is why the group chose me to be a leader.

Is everyone involved in the project or is there more traditional way to complete the course?

- We haven’t encountered a situation in which somebody wouldn’t want to participate in this action. This initiative is definitely a lot more interesting and more practical than learning slides by heart. From an organizational point of view, we cannot afford losing even one person, because it will result with us being understaffed. The level of commitment is of course different, but we try to motivate everyone to give their best.

What is the genesis of the project and its name?

- For the first time, the action was organized in 2011 on the initiative of dr Marek Zielinski from the Depart-ment of Marketing Strategy. Its name refers to the first edition during which we raised money for a car for a person in need (‘fura’ is a common Polish word for a car).

What is the role of a teacher?

- Dr Marek Zielinski is a great authority for all. Organizers often expect some guidance from, him. To a certain point, he helps us to develop the concept and shares his insights. But at some point, he lets us do the work. It is important that we learn to be responsible.

What is the division of responsibili-ties among the organizers? Do you have any particular structure?

Fura szczęścia- Lucyna Zawada, leader of the project, talks about charity actions of PUEB students.

17

INTERVIEW

- Of course. We would not be able to function without it! The whole initiative consists of several special-ized groups. At the beginning, activity of the strategy department, which created an overview of the whole action was the most important. Then, other departments started their work- sponsorship, social media and organizations. We assign tasks to each department and it is reflected in the success of the project.

What events have you prepared for this year’s edition?

- The opening event going to be a club party in the style of Casino Royal, which will be held on 21 April in the club Coolozium. Later, there will also be open lectures at the Poznan University of Economics and Business and a picnic for students and residents of Poznan. Our biggest event is, however, the night run Fura Świetlików, which will be held at the Citadel. We anticipate more than 400 participants.

How are you going to raise funds?

- We have many sources. First of all, these are the revenues from the starter packs, tickets to our events, contests with prizes and fairs. We would like obtain part of funds from sponsors. Currently, we are negotiat-ing with one of companies that could be the title sponsor of the race.

Have you set any financial goal?

- We raise the bar from year to year. We gathered 13,000 during the first edition and more than 25,000 dur-ing the previous one. This year, our dream is to break the record of 30,000. However, the target amount is not our fundamental challenge. Our goal is to help children. If we raise about 28000, we will also be happy.

On the occasion of writing your bachelor’s thesis you had a chance to look at the functioning of the

previous editions. Have you no-ticed a big evolution of the whole project?

- I’ve noticed many changes - both organizational and promotional. We learn from the experiences of the previous organizers. This year, we resigned from a gala, which took place in previous years. We did it because it was the hardest and most time-con-suming element of the whole action and it did not bring any spectacular benefits. The run proved to be a great success on subsequent ocassions, so we decided to keep it on the agenda. It was not organized during the first edition as the healthy lifestyle was not as popular at the time. You could say that we have adapted to market requirements. It is very similar when it comes to the issues of promotion – less focus on posters and leaflets in

the university buildings, more focus on social media and press releases.

How useful is the theoretical knowl-edge you gained during your daily activities?

- Very! Strategic planning, selection of target groups, delegating tasks and motivating employees – we learned about all this from books and notes. Now we have the opportunity to try it in practice. We often do it unconsciously, but we automatically perform SWOT or PEST analysis in our heads when thinking about organi-zation of the event. Of course, it is obvious that we do not call a spade a spade. People from other under-graduate courses made us realize how different our way of thinking is.

A personal advice for PUEB students:

I chose to study at PUEB because...

My best memory from the student days is...

Skills gained at PUEB allow me to...

In five years, I would like to…

Outside of work, I like...

When I chose this school (then Academy of Economics) in 2006, it was the only university in Central Europe that combined public relations with economics, not with journalism or political science. I found this solution very practical (and it turned out I was right). In addition, I like challenges. I thought it would be interesting to learn integrals and matrices after passing my high school finals in history and social studies.Back then, I thought I would work in advertising. It sounded so exciting and many of my friends actually work in that industry today. I ended up working in the media and I wouldn't change my studies nor my work to anything else. I got what I wanted – my days at work are never the same.

Better analyse and verify information.Data, tables and charts do not scare me (after all, I passed econometrics and I've done it twice). I like to look for information about given problem in different sources to know other points of view. Most of all, my studies taught me that there are always people behind the numbers and it helps me a lot.

To become a journalist who is not only efficient newswoman (I like to get information faster than others, preferably the first) but also a good reporter (because all journalists would like to write about life changing histories).

Drinking over-sugared coffee, reading books on the carpet and then sleeping until noon. I love to teach dancing (from cha-cha to waltz)- after hours I am a certified instructor of ballroom dancing.

Do not let anyone tell you that the most important thing is that "all adds up on paper." More importan-tly, you should know why it doesn’t. That does not always mean trouble – aberrations are caused not only by failures but also by successes. And for something more practical - practice as much as possible and as early as possible. It sounds trite, but we really learn much from experience.

The view of Poznan from the 18th floor of the Collegium Altum. Also, people I met during my studies (not only in elevators, although their frequent malfunctions favoured integration). I met friends for life and professionals (not only lecturers but also my colleagues) who I recommend to my editorial colleagues to this day.

Better wages in supermarkets

Large retail chains have raised their employees’ pay. A cashier with more than two years of work experi-ence can expect a salary increase of 200-250 PLN. According to our expert, dr. Marcin Lewicki from the Depart-ment of Trade and Marketing, such increases are dictated by the desire to

maintain permanent staff, attract new employees and improve corporate im-age. - Chains introduce more and more products of better quality and attract customers. To stay on a roll, these com-panies want to show that they are good and honest employers - says Marcin Lewicki in Głos Wielkopolski.

ZUS or OFE?From 1 April to 31 July 2016, work-

ing Poles can decide whether part of their pension contribution to the so-called second pillar is to be deposited on the individual ZUS (Social Insur-ance Institution) sub-account or paid to the Open Pension Funds (OFE). - In economic terms, it is probably a decision of key importance. First of all, it concerns very small part of the contribution- said Joanna Ratajczak from the Depart-ment of Labour and Social Policy in Głos Wielkopolski. PUEB expert noted that people who choose to save in the

OPF will now start collecting capital from the beginning. Previous contri-butions were transferred to ZUS and they will not return to OFE. - Regard-less of the rate of profit, to speak about the real impact of these contributions on the amount of pension, we need to collect certain capital and that takes time - she said. - It is difficult to give universal advice. The theory says that di-versification of assets is inherently better than the lack of it. This would suggest a division of contributions between OFE and ZUS - she added.

ZUS borrows, but doesn’t pay back

Until 31 March 2016, ZUS (Social Insurance Institution) should pay back more than 39 billion loans received from the state budget for the pay-ment of pensions in previous years. We already know that the insurer is going to fail to pay the money on time - ZUS does not have the funds to repay loans. This is a system which

is permanently in deficit and which needs more and more support from the state budget. - says mgr Jakub Sawulski from the Department of Public Finance. - The only solution is annexing contracts and postponing repayment of loans. In the long term, the only perspective is their redemp-tion - added PUEB expert.
