The National Hispanic Arts Institute will occupy a
soon-to-be-renovated 45,000 square foot warehouse
owned by the NHCC and located on the southeast
corner of Avenida Cesar Chavez and 4th Street, just
across the street from the NHCC. Phase one of the
Workshop is slated to begin operations in Fall 2016,
with a full grand opening in Fall 2017. More than
20,000 people are expected to attend and benefit
from the workshop each year.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by New Mexico Secretary of Cultural
Affairs Veronica Gonzales, Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry, NHCC Executive Director Rebecca L. Avitia and CNM President
Katharine Winograd:
"CNM is extremely proud to be partnering with the
National Hispanic Cultural Center on this very exciting
effort," said CNM President Katharine Winograd. "And we
are looking forward to working with the NHCC in helping
the National Hispanic Arts Institute and Workshop
become a great success that draws interest locally,
regionally and nationally.”
Support For Arts Education and YAM In New Mexico
New Mexico is home to unique and
world-renowned art. And we believe the National
Hispanic Arts Institute & Workshop will help spawn new and exciting entrepreneurial
activity in New Mexico’s art community. This is a very intriguing concept, and we
think it’s going to be fantastic for New Mexico artists, aspiring art students
and our economy. Skills-based trainings will also be provided.
Focusing on the various
equipment & tools in the
space. Artists in resid-
ence and CNM faculty
members will have
the opportunity to
learn
from and be
energized by their connections to
students and each other. Albuquerque Mayor
Richard Berry applauds the CNM, NHCC partnership.

Family, School, & Community.” Students were asked to reflect on the potential of
leadership to transform their families and communities. Algodones art students
studied the work of George Catlin, an American painter (1796-1872) known for his
portraits of Native people. The students made their own drawings based on his work.
Then we used a projector and each student redrew their small drawings onto a large
paper.
The opening reception on April 4th was well attended by students and their families.
Our students’ works were featured on Channel 7 News that night! Each piece is for
sale at the IPCC for fifty dollars and last I checked they were selling like hot cakes.
Congratulations to Algodones art students!
Five 2nd and 3rd grade art students from
Algodones Elementary School recently
received awards and prize money for their
portraits of Native Americans in the 2015
Student Art Show at the Indian Pueblo
Cultural Center. More than 190 Native
American students from 14 schools across
New Mexico are part of this dazzling show
with the theme of “Symbols of Leadership:

Other methods of communicating about arts events locally and throughout NM include
newsletters, school and other websites, CDs that relate the story of growing arts programs
across the state, and teachers and program coordinators sitting down with each other,
sharing ideas and lessons.
As an example, Albuquerque Public Schools, with approximately 90,000 students, has
a monthly newsletter that continually informs the community about their ever-improving
elementary arts programs.

• For the past 30 years, many exhibits have been

Extraordinary—Since the Fine Arts Education Act was implemented in 2003–2004, the numbers of
arts educators at the elementary level have more than doubled.
• Albuquerque Public Schools has grown from 12 elementary visual arts teachers and 12
elementary music teachers to more than 100 teachers. APS is planning to hire more.
• Santa Fe Schools progressed from approximately 14 elementary music teachers—and no
elementary art teachers—to hiring more than 20 elementary visual art teachers.
• Gallup-McKinley Schools has evolved from zero elementary visual art teachers to at least eight
visual art educators.
• In general, the other 86 public school districts have followed suit, as have the 38 elementary
charter schools.
• Bernalillo Public Schools five elementary art teachers (added through FAEA to match the music
teachers), reach students from six different pueblos, and a large Hispanic student population.
In 2003, Representative Max Coll passed House Bill12 creating the Fine Arts Education Act (FAEA) which funds each participating elementary student for elementary art, music, dance and theatre programs in every NM school district.
More than half of the 89 public school districts enter student work in the NM State Fair School Art Display. In turn, the Public Education Department (PED) coordinates the September Display along with the NM State Fair; the PED requests that these participating school districts select student work from their spring art shows.
