1. Introduction

1.1 Objective of Proposal:

The Marketing Team at Mary Kay Cosmetics has designed a proposal to improve the lives of at-risk teenage girls in Dallas, Texas. The proposal is for a 3-day conference where the ladies will learn how they have the power to improve their lives through educational enrichment. It is an entry into the Business Gives Back Competition and is presented to the Dallas Chamber of Commerce.

1.2 Background of Proposal:

Many shocking statistics regarding youth, crime, and education are presented in this report. As an organization founded by women, for women, Mary Kay considers it of urgent importance to provide a way to directly improve the lives of the most vulnerable young ladies in Dallas, TX.

1.3 Effects of Proposal:

As a result of this conference, attendees will emerge with skills in networking, professionalism, how to write a resume, and how to apply to college. They will have an understanding of how to dress and present themselves professionally. These tools will give the teens the ability to improve their lives, start college or a career. They will be far more likely to avoid the pitfalls of drugs, teen pregnancy, dropping out of school, or committing crime.

1.4 Summation of Proposal:

By targeting at-risk girls at an age when their needs for college and career training is immediate, they will learn the skills to improve their lives at a pivotal time. With the ability to secure a job, the young ladies have greater potential to avoid crime and lift themselves out of poverty. This has the potential to help their families as well by providing greater stability through employment and education.

2. Background

2.1 About Mary Kay:

Mary Kay strives for the empowerment of women and entrepreneurs (Mary Kay, 2017). This starts with our youth. Our Mary Kay site further shares how a woman pioneered in a field with predominantly men. In 1963, she dared to dream by launching her very own successful company in Addison, Texas (Mary Kay, 2017). With one idea, and five products in a tiny store, she leaves a powerful legacy that transforms lives (Mary Kay, 2017). Furthermore, by sharing timeless principles and influences she has helped women achieve their own success through global independent sales, (Mary Kay, 2017).

As a philanthropist, Mary Kay was committed to helping women by breaking the silence on many issues, and by providing tools and resources in order to see a change (Mary Kay, 2017). In leading her business she didn't believe in competition but valued The Golden Rule (Mary Kay, 2017). That rule is "Praising people to success" and "sandwiching every bit of criticism between two heavy layers of praise." (Mary Kay, 2017) Furthermore, through the Mary Kay Foundation, our goal and team mission has always been to effectively raise self-esteem and encourage one’s strengths (Mary Kay, 2017).

In order to reach our youth, Mary Kay has teamed up with Dare to Dream, a non-profit organization, to connect with teens at a pivotal time in their life. Everyone remembers their teen years and dealing with many difficult matters. In joining forces, and through our workshop, we want to help in powering our girls’ dreams locally in our community. Mary Kay hopes to make a lasting impression that will help guide our girls in the direction of their dreams.

3. Why In Dallas? 3.1 Teen pregnancy:

Teen pregnancy is on the rise in many states, and those numbers continue to increase year after year (Daverth, 2017). "According to data from the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), more young women in Texas become parents for a second or third time in their teenage years than any other state in the nation." (Daverth, 2017) The CDCP information reveals that our teens right here in Texas are continuing the cycle and need guidance. They are not only having one but up to three children per teen (Daverth, 2017). Having the highest rate of repeat teen pregnancies in the country takes a physical, financial and psychological toll on the teenagers and their future (Daverth, 2017). The article confirms how difficult it is to be a teen parent and navigate the financial and emotional challenges of parenting so young; adding yet another child only aggravates the situation for both parent and children (Daverth, 2017).

3.2 School drop-out rate:

According to the Community Health Solutions, Dallas has a 9.5% dropout rate in 2015, compared to other cities such as Denton and Rockwall that are at 1.3% (Healthy North Texas, 2017). With proven data, in previous years these numbers still remain high (Healthy North Texas, 2017). In Dallas, we hope to provide an alternative perspective before teens choose to drop out of school.

CHS Data School Drop-Out Rate- Dallas County 9.5%

! 3.3 Dallas crime rates:

Crime rates have decreased over the years but this is still an issue which can dramatically change the lives of those involved. It is even worse to realize how young

!4

Page 6: Powering the Dreamwomen achieve their own success through global independent sales, (Mary Kay, 2017). As a philanthropist, Mary Kay was committed to helping women by breaking the silence

some of the people are who commit these crimes. As of 2015, 1,651.1 per 100,000 girls in the resident population of the United States, between ages of 10 and 17 were arrested for various crimes including, murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, arson, vandalism, and other crimes and violations (Ojjdp.gov, 2017).

As of 2014, 18,287 girls ages ranging below 10 to age 16 were arrested in Dallas for violent and nonviolent crimes (DPS, 2014).

Moreover, in Dallas, the overall crime rate is about 42 per 1,000 persons (Dallascityhall, 2017).

Whether the crimes being committed are a cry for help, due to misguidance, or problems at home; it is our mission to try to help these vulnerable young ladies find change and empower their dreams. Not only could this event improve the lives of the girls who attend, but it can help the Dallas community become a better and safer place for everyone.

3.4 Youth drug and alcohol use:

Drug and alcohol use is a growing trend in today's youth. Sadly, 44.3 % of high school aged students use marijuana in the United States. 69.9% of high school students drink alcohol and many of them binge drink (Pathway to Prevention, 2015). Consequently, car accidents are the number one leading cause of death in high school students and 25% of these accidents occur while the driver is under the influence of alcohol (Pathway to Prevention, 2015).

3.5 Teen suicide:

While it is a difficult subject to discuss, teen suicide is a real and difficult issue. “1 in 6 high school students have seriously considered suicide, and 1 in 12 have actually attempted suicide” (Dallasvoice, 2014). Altogether, the suicide rate among high school aged people is increasing, which is reflecting a trend gaining national attention as more teen suicides are being reported (Dallasvoice, 2014).

69.9% drink alcohol and 44.% smoke marijuana. 25% of car accidents occur under the influence.

4. Background

4.1 Dare to Dream:

“Dare to Dream’s mission is to pick up the pieces of broken lives of at-risk youth to meet their emotional and spiritual needs” (Dare To Dream, 2017). Their goal is to enable them to turn away from destructive behavior by providing educational enrichment programs to prevent crime, overcome problems of drug and alcohol abuse, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, the school drop-out rate, and teen suicide (Greatnonprofits, 2017). They primarily focus on the wounded youth between the ages of 10 and 18 found in shelters,

group homes, orphanages, and detention centers. They have been encouraging, aiding, and providing guidance to the young community of Dallas since 1987 (Dare To Dream, 2017). Dare to Dream also received an award for being one of the best independent charities in America. The award, known as the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence was bestowed upon Dare to Dream because they met the highest standards of public accountability, cost effectiveness, and program effectiveness (Dare to Dream, 2017). Mary Kay intends to partner with Dare to Dream in order to hold a three-day event with workshops to help young women between the ages of 15 and 18 gain knowledge and learn professionalism, in order to reduce these problems and encourage positive futures for our youth.

5. The Proposal

Mary Kay Cosmetics is partnering with the Dare to Dream Foundation in order to provide young teens in Dallas the tools to make their dreams come true. Mary Kay will accomplish the goal of empowering young teens at risk of drug and alcohol abuse, juvenile delinquency, teen pregnancy, dropping out of school, and teen suicide through a series of educational enrichments, workshops, counseling services and coaching. We will be holding a 3-day event for 100 Dallas local girls from ages 15-18 and our purpose is to ensure these girls who are from broken homes to “Power Their Dreams” through education and enrichment services.

100 at-risk Dallas girls will be selected by the Dare To Dream Foundation.

!6

They will be given an opportunity to learn valuable life-skills by a motivational guest speaker, Coach Keisha, who will help them overcome life's challenges with confidence while empowering them to achieve their goals.

5.1 Coach Keisha: Coach Keisha is an "accountability partner, encourager, and motivator who provides education on hot topics affecting teen girls today" (Coach Keisha, 2017). She became a Certified Life Coach, Author, Mentor, and Motivational Speaker for young women ages 11-22. She helps them to understand the issues they are facing and to communicate effectively, preventing them from making poor decisions. (Coach Keisha, 2017). She empowers girls to succeed in school and life by developing their self-esteem, helping conquer challenges, teaching smart decision-making skills, and preparing them for college and beyond (Coach, Keisha). She is the queen of empowering teens, young women, and their mothers who devote their lives to raising them (Coach Keisha, 2017). Keisha helps instill confidence by teaching

the girls poise, posture, purpose and table manners, handling peer pressure, body image enhancement, setting goals, overcoming fears, and nailing job interviews (Gaddis, 2017).

5.2 The Event:

100 Dallas local girls will be selected by Dare to Dream on the basis of need, and they will write a short paper detailing why they should be selected. In this 3 day event, we will be providing them with counseling services, food, professional hair and makeup, as well as tailored, professional attire sponsored by Dress for Success.

We want to guide the girls towards success by holding a 3 day event at the Mary Kay headquarters located in 1330 Regal Row, Dallas, TX 75247. The event will take place on August 3rd through 5th, starting at 10:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m. The girls will sign in around 9:30 to 10:00 a.m. They will be broken up into 3 rotating groups.

“I believe that an empowered woman begins with a confident girl!” Coach Keisha

5.3 Entertainment Activities:

In order to make the girls feel more welcome, our workers will be giving them a card with a number on it for a fun interactive game to act as an icebreaker. Music will be playing in the background for a relaxed atmosphere. The girls will have a chance to walk around the room meeting one another and trying to find the person with the same number. Once they have found their match, they will be given few minutes to interact and share stories. This will give them an opportunity to bond, create a new friendship, and understand their background.

5.4 Educational Enrichment:

Educational enrichment allows girls to personally grow by focusing on self-awareness, communication skills, and by engaging in network and development skills. The girls will learn how to write a resume and cover letter to present themselves more professionally, and to seize future opportunities. They will also learn some basic computer skills that are a necessity for many careers. The girls will also be given an opportunity to learn some networking skills to help build relationships with others, and to learn to be confident about how they speak. The workers will give them a career advising assessment to see which career they may be best suited for, and we will guide them on how to apply to colleges. Each age group will be given a chance to win a scholarship for 2 years to earn their Associate’s Degree as a first place prize or to cover 1 year of college as a second place prize.

5.5 Consultation:

The workers will gives the girls a free consultation on how to dress more professionally and be confident in what they wear. Free, tailored professional attire will be provided by Dress for Success. Their mission is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life (Dress for Success, 2017).

6. Staffing and Budget

6.1 Staff

Mary Kay is dedicated to having our most trustworthy and experienced staff on this project due to the fact that this whole event is being held for young girls. For this reason we have staffed the majority of this event with Mary Kay employees that we know and trust.

6.2 Volunteers

■ 6 Mary Kay Volunteers - We have chosen 6 women from our higher up executives that we feel will suit this position best. One executive from Mary Kay will be in charge of administering the one workshop class for each day of the event.

!10

Page 12: Powering the Dreamwomen achieve their own success through global independent sales, (Mary Kay, 2017). As a philanthropist, Mary Kay was committed to helping women by breaking the silence

One executive for each of the following classes:

i. Resume Workshop ii. Interview Workshop iii. Professional Appearance Workshop iv. Professional Etiquette Workshop v. Computer class vi. Networking class

■ 20 Mary Kay Volunteers - The 6 executives have recruited 20 employees at their discretion that will be in charge of setting up and tearing down the event at the end of the 3 days.

6.3 Paid Outside Sources

■ 8 Professionals for Additional Services- There will be additional classes and services offered for the girls to gain the best personal and professional knowledge. All of these instructors are Dallas natives so they are familiar with the culture of the area and can give the most valuable input on their respective fields of study.

Additional Classes and Services: i. College Preparation ii. Career Counselor iii. Therapist iv. Professional Appearance v. Guest Speaker

These are the main positions that will be crucial for the event in order to educate and enrich the lives of the 100 at risk young women joining our event. We are able to cut cost tremendously and keep our budget reasonable by recruiting the majority of staff from Mary Kay Headquarters. We want to help these young women become the best adults possible and with this staff we are sure will be able to do that.

Grand Total $50,000

6.5 Budget Analysis:

The $21,240 of our budget is to provide scholarships for 8 lucky girls. This money will go to pay for 4 girls’ two full years of community college tuition (Associate's Degree) and 4 girls’ one year tuition at community college.

The majority of the staff for this event will be Mary Kay employees allowing us to cut costs in the budget. We do however need to allocate $14,670 for the additional staff members that are crucial to the development of these young women.

!12

Page 14: Powering the Dreamwomen achieve their own success through global independent sales, (Mary Kay, 2017). As a philanthropist, Mary Kay was committed to helping women by breaking the silence

Each day of the event the girls will get a hot breakfast and lunch, we will also be feeding the 34 staff members. The meals will be $10 for each person for breakfast and lunch, totaling $1,340 per day for 3 days. The total amount for the 3 days for both meals is $8,020. Many of these young women are not provided hot meals each day so it is important for us to be able to feed them a full meal when they arrive.

The girls will be sent home with goodie bags that include Coach Keisha's book, a shirt, a few pens, and some basic cosmetics all in a Dare to Dream backpack. Each goodie bag will cost $50 for a total cost of $5,000.

The final expenses come from the 3 day Dart pass that will be provided for each girl that will cost $750 and the flyers that we will pass out to Dare to Dream so they can find the perfect candidates for the event.

The grand total for the full 3 days is $50,000. Mary Kay plans on donating $25,000 to cover half of the event. With the additional $25,000 provided by Chamber of Commerce we can begin our first event and look forward to Powering the Dream for the 100 young women that will be attending this event.

7. Conclusion

This event will directly impact the lives of 100 teenage girls who desperately need it. It will provide them with skills that can improve the rest of their lives and the lives of their families. The budget makes significant use of Mary Kay resources and volunteers to keep costs to a minimum. Holding future, similar events could have an enormous impact on the future of Dallas as a result of many changed lives. Considering the scope of the event and the positive repercussions it will have, this would be a prudent and invaluable investment for the Dallas Chamber of Commerce.

8. Targeted Questions and Answers:

Will there be follow-up to monitor the status of the attendees after the conference?

Answer: Mary Kay will partner one Mary Kay associate per every five girls and they will keep in contact via email or phone. They will be able to discuss a wide variety of things to help them stay on track, be informed of upcoming events, and discuss the essay assignment for the scholarship opportunities. Moreover, the girls will have all the contact information for Dare to Dream in case they wish to join their program further throughout their young adult lives.

!13

Page 15: Powering the Dreamwomen achieve their own success through global independent sales, (Mary Kay, 2017). As a philanthropist, Mary Kay was committed to helping women by breaking the silence

If Dare to Dream focuses on kids between the ages of 10 and 18 and Coach Keisha is a life coach for young women between the ages of 11 and 22 then why is the event only held for girls ages 15 to 18?

Answer: Mary Kay chose to target the ages of 15-18 because the need for college and career training is immediate. The hope is that after a successful event, similar conferences will be held annually going forward. At this time, the group will analyze if expanding the age group will be financially feasible.

Will this event only service the local community? Do you think it will expand past the Addison and Dallas areas?

Answer: Dallas was chosen as the location for this first event because it is the hometown of Mary Kay. This allowed us to leverage many Mary Key resources to control costs. We would love to expand into other cities, but more time and budget analysis would be necessary first.

The event is only for girls, will you hold an event for males as well?

Answer: The background and values of Mary Kay really align with empowering women, so as of right now that's where we would like to focus our efforts. In the future when we are able to have more events similar to this one and we feel like we have made a real impact with young women we are open to the idea of expanding and holding an event for males.

What do you consider at-risk/wounded youth?

Answer: An at-risk youth is someone who has less than optimal outcomes in the future. Youth are considered at-risk or wounded by numbers of factors such as living in poverty, being neglected at home or living in a stressful environment, involved in drugs and alcohol, considering dropping out from school, as well as lacking social or emotional supports.

According to Dare to Dream, our youth are facing many problems including: no dad at home, a mother who is working two jobs, no food on the table, selling drugs to provide needs, getting arrested, no spiritual guidance or foundation, no encouragement, and hopelessness (Dare To Dream, 2017).
