glucose is locked up in many larger forms = starches and glycogen lactose and sucrose, One of the major jobs of digestion is to break these chains into their individual

glucose units, which are then delivered by the blood to hungry cells throughout your body.

Attacking Starch Alpha-amylase begins the process of starch digestion. It takes starch chains and

breaks them into smaller pieces with two or three glucose units. Two similar types of amylase are made in your body--one is secreted in saliva, where it starts to break down starch grains as you chew, and the other is secreted by the pancreas, where it finishes its job. Then, these little pieces are broken into individual glucose units by a collection of enzymes that are tethered to the walls of the intestine.

Amylase in Action Since amylase needs to perform its job in the unpleasant environment of the

intestine, it is a small, stable enzyme resistant to unfavorable conditions. The amylase shown here (PDB entry 1ppi) is made by the pancreas in pigs. A small chain of five sugars (colored yellow) is bound in the active site, which is found in a large cleft on the enzyme. Structures for the two human enzymes (which look very similar) are available in PDB entries 1smd and 1hny. As you look through the PDB, you will also find many structures of alpha-amylases and other starch-digesting enzymes from bacteria and plants.

Before the body can deteriorate into cancer all the body's defense systems have to be depressed and out of balance. If your pancreas is working properly and if you have adequate pancreatic enzymes, you cannot develop cancer.

Researchers looked at data from the Scandinavian Lymphoma Etiology study, which compared over 3,000 patients with NHL with a similar number of healthy patients. …those who had been given antibiotics more than 10 times as children.

This could mean that the increasing use of antibiotics in the 20th century might also explain the rise in NHL cases.

Also True for NSAIDs There was also an increased risk of NHL for heavy users of non-steroidal anti-

inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This includes ibuprofen drugs such as Motrin and Advil.

Patients were also permitted to take a daily dose of aspirin use for cardiovascular prophylaxis (325 mg/d).

The researchers note that "Conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are associated with a spectrum of toxic effects," something which many patients are likely unaware of.

The most obvious and striking thing about these results is the tremendous rise in r isk of aspir in users. …daily aspirin use raised the GI complication risks up to 450%. For patients taking NSAIDs, daily aspirin use raised the r isks up to 335%.

Flavonoids are found in numerous fruits and vegetables, as well as in certain types of tea. These compounds are thought to be antioxidants -- compounds capable of 'mopping up' free radicals, the harmful byproducts of normal metabolism.

Numerous studies have suggested that antioxidants help prevent cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses. The study focused on daily intake of three major sources of flavonoids -- apples, broccoli, and tea.

Of the three sources, only high broccoli consumption was associated with significant

reductions in heart attack. Flavonoids appear to reduce oxidation of LDL ('bad') cholesterol in the bloodstream, preventing cholesterol from sticking to artery walls, which can lead to clogged arteries and boost heart attack risk.

A study of more than 125,000 healthcare workers found that just one additional daily serving of fruit or vegetables lowered the risk of heart disease by 4%. Vegetables such as spinach , kale , broccoli and fruits such as oranges , grapefruits

The data support a protective effect of greater consumption of fruits and vegetables, in particular green leafy vegetables and vitamin C-r ich fruits and vegetables, against risk for coronary heart disease.

Increased fruit and vegetable consumption was also found to protect people with type 2 diabetes against hear t attack, a potential complication of the disease.

The fact is, your body needs 22 amino acids in order to build protein molecules and muscles. Of these 22 amino acids, there are 8 which the body cannot make and must get from outside sources. All 8 are available in raw plant foods. And in raw plant foods they are in a form which is easily assimilated and used by the body.
